  1. I'm watching mlb but listening to Farmer and Darrin. I like them but Darrin just made me sick. He's calling for a triple play. Bush league color announcing there. Don't beg for triple plays.
  2. Lester is good but AL teams have no business bunting!! What if he woulda lit into one? Different ballgame.
  3. BackDoor: Are u of the opinion there will not be enough money to throw around? Remember this is a team with owner and partners having so much profit the last few seasons cause of the low payroll the money has made their wallets George Costanza-sized.
  4. I can't believe how some people aren't "sentimental" any more about guys who have been with the team a long time. I get the feeling the ideal team to some fans is one in which every player is between the ages of 25 and 29 with the exception of some pitchers. For some reasons the modern stat minded fan doesn't mind having some elder pitchers on the team. In my perfect world, a guy like Jose is our feel good story of our next postseason or 2 and he is knocking the ball all over the park in leading us to ALCS and WS titles and he's the guy crying and hoisting the trophy during the parade(s).
  5. Richie .. this is exactly what I proposed basically. I said three years 39 million with a team option. This is 2 years 25 million (12.5 per year) with no third year. Everybody loved poppy's post and hated mine yet both offers were almost the same. Jose isn't exactly ancient. Next year will be his age 33 season. What's wrong with giving a loyal soldier 13 mill a year when you consider what the Sox paid Alonso? Why not give some of jerry's nestegg to a guy who deserves some money?? Also I love somebody on here saying 120 Jose RBIs next year are "solid numbers." 120 RBIs are a lot of RBIs. Excellent numbers, not just solid. I can't believe how we take Jose for granted around here. Even if we paid him 13 mill the next three years and he averaged .225 with 21 homers and 76 RBIs I wouldn't hate him because of what he's done in past seasons. I don't think he's going to suddenly reek in age 33 and 34 seasons. It's kind of like KC fans with alex gordon. Even though he's dipped fans don't begrudge him some $$s for past performance. Although Gordon does have a boatload of RBIs this season.

Rios to greg is a four-letter word. I did not like his game. Leury has won me over pretty much. I.Love.Leury at this time.
  7. In answer to your question, you can't move on from a trade that bad. It also is the same in the draft. Remember Durant vs. Oden? The GM that took Oden got fired after it was obvious Durant was Durant and Oden was unfortunately (because of injury) an all time bust. You can't ever forget a trade as bad as the Tatis trade because it's sports. The trade was that bad it can't be forgotten .... The good news is the Eloy trade is another one that will never be forgotten and that's on the good ledger. Both trades will go down in infamy. Because we're talking sports here, both trades will be remembered forever.
  8. Pete Alonso. ... second rounder in 2016. Why did the Sox and other teams miss on him?? Is Vaughn of the 2019 draft destined to hit bombs like this guy?

The way Leury is hitting I no longer have a problem seeing his name in the lineup. He's another guy having a very nice season. Damn ... Ricky does have some talent to work with. Leury can hit a bit to go with the studs Eloy, Moncada, Timmy, Abreu and McCann this season. I guess the rotation of Gio and Cease and pray for rain and one reliable reliever in Colome and spotty defense is nuff to keep us under .500. I. Like. Leury.
  10. I haven't called anybody that 'nik' word in a long time. I try to be respectful. I'm using "advanced stat lovers" or "advanced stat people" or stat worshipers, etc, and I always say "many" not all any more. there are no absolutes. I read your full post but like the above mentioned part the best. i did not realize these things when I was rebelling greatly against you. The fact you wear an Abreu jersey is good enough for me. You are not a Jose disliker. Sorry for lumping you in the wrong group. I agree with the above mentioned lines and say thank you for recognizing Jose's value! I also love Vile's logical defense of Jose as well. But thank you Chicago White Sox! You wear the jersey of Abreu and said you recognize his value to the clubhouse, etc. You would win any arguments how Manny is more valuable than Jose but thank you for the Jose love! You are OK in my book. Sorry if I implied you were ill informed! You are OK by me. BTW I think this is a correct statement by you. You said: "All that being said, comparing his offensive numbers to Machado to try to justify paying him more is without question poor logic. Positions matter and a good 1B should hit better than a 3B all else being equal. Ballparks matter and the Grate is a much more friendly stadium than Petco. And when it comes to handing out contracts, age matters because you are paying for future production. When combined, all these factors make Manny Machado a terrible comp for what Jose Abreu should get if extended." (All true, I think Vile and I realize Jose isn't worth Manny money, we'd just like to see him take a bit of Jerry's money. I was saying instead of the one-year 8 million somebody mentioned, I'd like to see him get 3 years 39 million. Then all one year deals the rest of his career. Or two years 26 mill with a team option for a third year.
  11. You are appreciated, vile, good stuff.
  12. Great great post. I love these posters not married to the advanced stats.
  13. Went to see "Yesterday." Not the greatest movie. I'd give it 2.5 stars out of 4 and that's with me in a generous mood and the fact looking at Lily James for 2 hours is very pleasant. I'd say 2 to 2.5 stars for the movie. I enjoyed the acting of the lead Patel as well. He was OK.
  14. Sorry I'm human. I never pretended to know everything. I have my opinions on individual players and the rebuild/tank job like everybody else. So excuuuuuuuussssssseeeee meeeee.
  15. For you to not tip your cap to Jose for his having an almost identical season as the great Machado is really sad. Just tell us you dislike Jose and won't ever change your mind. We will understand.
  16. This is why we can't take the Abreu dissenters seriously. Your first two sentences says it all. Almost identical seasons. This is why these advanced stat lovers and Abreu dislikers slay me. You can't talk logic into people who have their minds made up. Abreu is old. Abreu is old news, blah, so bad defensively. We can't change their minds so I can do is praise vilehoopster for his great posts and say, "Vile, you are the poster of the year!"

I guess that's fair enough. I hope our scouting department makes sure to acquire guys who look like ultra productive ballplayers especially if we deal Colome. We'll go from having a reliable to top-notch closer to really having nobody if we deal Colome. Trading Colome for lower level prospects would be like going from Clive Christian cologne to Old Spice.

I'm starting to like Leury. When a guy produces, if you are a reasonable fan, you have to tip your cap. He's starting to emerge as a fairly consistent hitter/fielder. I.Like.Leury at this point in time.
  19. Good post Scooter. I haven't completely given up on him. Except I dropped him from all my fantasy teams 2 starts ago as I sense a lot of mediocrity to lousiness in Lopez. I do hope he makes it. I remember a couple games in April or May where he had a zillion K's. But right now I sense a guy who is in desperate need of revision by Coop. I am not burying him but I am tossing the first shovel of dirt his way.
  20. Ron I will respect you more if you can at least agree with SI's recent assertion. He wrote that Abreu is very good at saving Timmy's bad throws in the dirt. Does Ron at least agree Abreu is VERY GOOD at digging? He has problems moving left and right, I agree. If you would agree at least that he's a good vacuum cleaner on low throws I will respect you some. If you say he sucks at digging throws I know you are unreasonable.
  21. Man, you are a great poster. I endorse this post completely! Your second to last sentence is my biggest beef with "many" message board fans. I suspect if you are in the stands at a game at The Cell, you'd find 24,000 fans very very pleased with Abreu and wanting to keep him and pay him some dough. On here? Not so much. This sentence of yours belongs in the message board hall of fame. You wrote: "You guys were willing to give a total dick like Machado over 30 million a year for 10 years, but now you're wanting to nickel and dime a loyal soldier who has been here for the worst of the rebuild?" Lovely sentence! I suspect not many posters are sentimental enough about a loyal soldier like Abreu to agree with you, but I do!
  22. I worship this poster! Fantastic post SI1020!
  23. Give him the going rate for 33 year old guys who are productive but not among the top 15 hitters in the game. In other words, give him a lot more than 8 mill. I'd sign him 3 years for 36 million (it's Jerry's money folks) or 40 million. If it were the NBA I'd give him two years 26 million with a team option for year three. Baseball doesn't do that team option thing, right?
  24. If we do have to trade him cause of rebuild-happy fans' demands, trade him to a team that will let him play in the field if that's what he wants. I don't blame him. DH is for fat guys or at least lazy guys. Abreu is no ballerina at first but I've seen worst first basemen. His weakness is he blows when he has to dart to both his left and right. I'd give him a C and could accept a grade of C- or B-plus for his defense at first but he's better than a D IMO.
  25. One thing I got out of this game, you people that want Eloy to DH are insane IMO. He's going to be average to fine in LF. Maybe his arm blows ... we'll have to live with that. Johnny Damon played with a noodle arm forever. There's absolutely no reason to stash Eloy at DH. Also, Lopez appears to be blah at best. Bullpen for him it looks like unless Coop can fix him. Eloy is having a helluva rookie season.
