Police keep killing black people
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 22, 2017 -> 03:19 PM) I wonder how much of the direct action during the 50's and 60's civil rights movement was legal? Dr. Martin Luther King was in favor of legal, safe, peaceful protesting. And he was one of the greatest men to EVER live, folks.

Police keep killing black people
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 22, 2017 -> 02:58 PM) And yet you just wrote that your argument for why people shouldn't legally and safely protest during the National Anthem was eloquent. Which of your statements would you like to support? Both. My anthem argument was it's not good for a team sport. One guy on an island is not good for the team morale. Coaches are so into team, it is ridiculous to have one guy breaking away on his own island. Dr. King would be AGAINST breaking windows in St. Louis folks and disrupting traffic. I pray you have no relatives who need to get to the hospital and are blocked by protestors blocking the street! It's illegal and actually selfish and even cruel that a woman trying to give birth can't get to the f***ing hospital because the highway is blocked by illegal protestors. You tell me Dr. King would approve and I might change my position.

Tim Anderson
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 10:39 PM) His value is probably going to be tied largely to athleticism, so as that goes, so likely will go his value. So basically enjoy 4-5 seasons of Tim. That's about it for him. Hopefully we'll be WS good in years 3, 4, 5.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Two-Gun Pete @ Sep 22, 2017 -> 02:15 AM) But there are two problems with doing nothing: 1. If Avi's 2017 is a mirage, then his value will never be higher. (Based on his overall body of work, & the very favorable offensive environment this season, & his luck, I happen to believe it is a mirage.) I still say "sell high." I buy the track record, not the one lucky year if I'm Hahn. Did you not read the other posts? His BABIP is out of whack and his power numbrers stink and his RBI totals aren't ungodly. He has little to no trade value. We can't have it both ways, folks. We say the red flags are there and he's basically not very good and why would any team want that??? So you want to acquire a couple hack middle relievers for him? Fine I guess. Or some low level outfielder who will never make it big either?

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (Quin @ Sep 22, 2017 -> 04:29 AM) Not something you want. N. Korea may test nukes over the pacific ocean now. Kim's statements are inflammatory. This should all prove interesting. Why wont China criticize Kim and tell him to grow up? China would be beloved if they took control here.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 10:36 PM) LINK Wow Kim says he will respond with fire. It's weird to think the world as we know it is in the hands of Trump n Kim. I wonder if China can do anything to stop the nuke warfare that appears imminent. China and Russia must step in, uh NOW.

Sox vs Stros
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Sep 22, 2017 -> 03:23 AM) What's going on? Why are they not LOSING? Can you guys believe a fan (me) doesn't even know our draft position at all? I have no idea where we currently rank or where we will pick in draft. Don't care one iota. Can u imagine how different we are on the spectrum? I would rather win tonight than get the No. 1 pick over the No. 2 or 3. Don't care bout that.

2017 Cubs Catch-all thread
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 04:34 AM) Just Like Kansas is a lock for every Final Four. Different sport, same playoff lottery Yes but Kansas blows it in a one loss and you are out format. The Cubs get the 7-game series to do their damage; ditto Cleveland. I really feel they survived the dog days where they couldn't get up for games after being in a WS. Now both teams are on fire. I feel like Cleveland will lose again cause the Cubs will be loose in the WS and Cleveland tight.

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 08:26 PM) Right now, I think that they'll be a 70 win team next year. Giolito, Lopez and Fulmer are due for some growing pains It's all up to the front office. If they want to lose big one more year we'll lose big. Cause if they want to win there has to be a rebuilt bullpen and a significant closer acquired. Unless Nate is the man. Also if they want to win they would have to acquire a veteran starter to go with the young guys. And finally we need a catcher who can hit a bit. Without these things, losing batches of games is assured and no way they are going to sign a pitcher; no way are they going to sign a closer. I'd say a very similar year to this year, maybe identical record wise or 5-10 games worse. The bullpen is huge nowadays and ours reeks.

Tim Anderson
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 04:52 PM) If he can provide a league average bat to go along with the elite defense we saw last year, he can be a 4 WAR player going forward. He's taken massive strides toward being that player again over the 2nd half of the year, and next year is his age 25 season. If he can manage to improve his bat (ideally by improving his plate discipline) to anything above league average, he could become an elite player. For how many years? Just curious as to how the WAR people look at longevity. Five great seasons in a Sox uniform then dump him? Or can he continue past 30 and excel as well?

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 06:21 PM) At this point I have to imagine the Sox will get some nice offers for Avi this winter. Why? Our fans have pointed out it's all a mirage. Why would other teams think otherwise and actually want him? That's what I don't understand. All the BABIP red flags. Only the Sox fans notice them? Nobody else?

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 02:43 PM) Moncada is playing some good baseball lately since switching bat weights. He's always had that eye, but it's nice to see him making adjustments at the MLB level. The pitchers and fielders positiioning will undoubtedly readjust to him as they gather more info on him So it will be interesting to see if he again can readjust. I still maintain that he won’t be that “next level” player that we are all expecting and hoping for however I do think he’ll have a few all-star seasons and be an above replacement player based on his speed, power and tools. Side note to make on this. I wish we would just extend Abreu in the next 12 months. I think he likes this team and is comfortable with the direction they are headed. After he knocks in a few more RBI’s he’ll be one of FOUR players to ever start their career with 20+ HR and 100+ RBI’s in his first 4 seasons. I believe the others are Ted Williams, Dimaggio, and Pujols. To think some of the lineups he’s done this on?? I just think it’s foolish to not keep him around. I think he’s the type of guy who’s going to be productive until 34-35. He puts in the work, is a student of the game. A great mentor for the young guys. Can slide into a DH role as necessary, etc. He’s arb eligible, but will be a FA earliest in 2020. If half way through 2018 he’s again doing the same at age 31? I say you buy out his 2019 and 2020 arb years and extend him 2 more additional years. That’s 4 year extension at say? $15-17mm a year? I’m not smart enough on arb numbers. Not sure what he’ll get each year for 3 years. But if you go over market value there, and then under market value for the last two years? I think its smart. He's a victim of the new cliche from fans: He's too old. He'll turn 31 before the start of next season. Too old to commit big bucks to. I guess right now the prime years for a ballplayer are 25 to 30. After that? Time to move on.

Police keep killing black people
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 08:44 PM) At least you fully endorse your statement that black people shouldn't protest anything that is important to you. Just keep it legal and safe or you should be arrested if u are protesting. Are you in favor in any instance of disrupting traffic or breaking businesses' windows? Please answer. The minute a person is blocked from getting to the hospital because of illegal protesting or a business has to rebuild because of protestors ... that's just wrong. Also at any moment you or a loved one can take a bottle to the head. it happens. This is real life and it is wrong.

2017 Cubs Catch-all thread
I think the Cubs and Indians are locks for the WS and the Cubs win again. Parade deuce. Cubs and Indians obviously were not into it until recently. They survived the doldrums and are ready to roll again. They have the most talent, folks.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 12:53 AM) Well yeah, this isn't the 1950s anymore. There will be no "war" with North Korea and that has been true for years. If they really attack anyone, they are gone off the map. End of story, no matter who is in charge, Obama, Trump, or The Rock. That's the main reason they haven't attacked anyone, just acted tough. Thing is, they are gone off the map, but they can take a lot of people with them. If they decide to bomb us, you better believe they will also send some nukes South Korea's way and we won't be able to deflect those nukes. So how do we blow North Korea off the map and at the same time make sure they don't blow up South Korea, Japan and Hawaii? If all those places are demolished with no survivors and there's nuclear fallout all over the world, that's bad.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 06:17 PM) No worries. KJU can't get past Kansas with his missiles anyway. Well, I'm sure the nuclear fallout would affect everybody. The water would be contaminated, etc. I'd think if Chicago got a direct hit, Kansas would be affected almost immediately. One thing about nukes. There won't be any protests once they hit land. We'll all be too busy looking for underground vaults to live in to worry about protesting. Also like I said, there will be no more sports to talk about. It's amazing how it's probably all rhetoric, but we actually have 2 leaders discussing total destruction. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 06:29 PM) Kim is the weaker party, he is the one who has to threaten. The US is the strongest country on the planet, there is no need to threaten. Everyone already knows we can wipe NK off the planet, what is the point in repeating it? After the first warning/threat, its meaningless. Watch how it becomes weaker each time: Dont do this or Ill do X I swear if you do it again, Ill do X. I really really mean it if you do it again, Ill do X. One threat is enough, if you make a threat you have to be willing to act on it or it completely loses its value. Makes sense. I am hoping you guys who aren't too worried about all this are correct. Like I said, there are no 'do-overs' once the nukes are launched. Too late.

Melky Cabrera Traded To Royals
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 07:30 PM) Melky was the only thing fun about this team for 2.5 years. He loved playing baseball visibly so much. I'd love that back, but I hate getting a guy one year too late. Paul Konerko, I just wanted him to retire as a sox. But I didn't enjoy that last year at all. I happen to think Avi (and Abreu for the most part) have been pretty fun this past year. I think they show they love the game as well. Avi especially looks like a guy having a blast. He hustles. I disagree with your first sentence big time. The only thing fun about this team was Melky the past 2.5 years?? Sale was fun too; and Q was pretty fun for the most part. Maybe you meant the entire 2.5 year period; Avi of course was only good this season and Sale wasn't here this season and Q was only here half this season.

Melky Cabrera Traded To Royals
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 07:04 PM) The Sox will only be signing guys that provide depth, value (to potentially trade later) or fit into their long term plans. Someone like Melky is good enough to get a better offer from another team, there is no reason for the Sox to sign him unless it's an absolute steal of a deal. So we've learned Melky's advanced stats reek (his traditional stats are very good this year, I'll give that to him; like I said I despised him before he showed that toughness after getting smashed in the face and staying in the game) and he's still "good enough to get a better offer from another team." I'm not defending Melky for sure; I'm not a Melkster fan cept for the abovementioned studly incident) but lets say somebody signs him at the age of 32 for four years, 48 million? Why would a team be that dumb? In Sox message board fans eyes, they would FREAK if the Sox signed some 32 year old for four years, 48 million. Most don't even want to sign Avi to a 5-year, 80 million dollar deal and he's much younger. So why would you, BigRuss, say Melky can get a team to sign him to a "better offer?" Why are other teams so dumb and Sox fans so smart? I'm sure Sox fans have Melky worth Mark Teahen type numbers. Maybe 3 years 15 million max; more like two years 10 million. Even that price would probably piss people off here. So why do you intimate Melky can get a good offer somewhere else? Why would that team be that dumb to sign a 32 year old to a 4, 5 year deal at about 10, 12 mill a year?

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 07:25 AM) If NK hits a country with a weapon, well cross that bridge when we get there. But for all we know that could be the precipice for deescalation because at that point Kim will know an actual response has to happen. It really shouldnt be about what some people think. This isnt High School, we dont have to prove that we can beat someone up. Words are meaningless. I know but Kim said the same thing, that he'd destroy the USA. USA is just responding with the same rhetoric. Hopefully it won't happen. Once nuclear war begins like I said we won't be worrying about the Sox No. 1 draft pick. There will be no more sports once nuclear fallout hits, etc. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 12:27 PM) Greg, the words you think were nice to fight back with was a threat of genocide. A threat to kill 25 million people. The President of the United States went to the United Nations for the first time and threatened to wipe out an entire country. Think about that next time before you praise someone for 'talking tough' Kim did the same thing and there's no outrage? Look up his exact words about terror or whatever he said. I mean Kim is the one firing up missiles. If one is nuclear and there's an accident and it hits Japan, we're all f***ed. Like I said the time to really worry I guess is when Trump tells all Americans to get out of S. Korea and Japan. this isn't good, folks, none of it.Like I said before, Trump and Kim are both crazy enough to be the ones who start the end of the world as we know it. We've never had a loose cannon like Trump in there before. This is scary.

Melky Cabrera Traded To Royals
So Melky in his age 32 season hitting .284, 17, 79 and has good advanced stats. Never been one of my favorites until this season when he stayed in the game despite getting hit in the face with a ball. I won't blast him because except for the BA he has Avi-like numbers but in this message board world, Melky is certainly beloved by Sox fans while a younger guy like Davidson who is trying to figure it out is not so loved. Although the poster who started the thread did praise him for his perseverance and putting up some decent numbers in his first season. So I'm assuming we all want Melky back even at 33? Cause that's a guy we like, right? I guess if he were to get too much money he'd be hated on the board and we'd want no part of him, but I'm assuming everybody is thinking 2 years about 5-6 million a year which is OK in Sox fanland.
