2016 Presidential Election Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 5, 2016 -> 08:25 PM) Beloved Hillary? Only two or three posters have come close to expressing anything resembling affection for her. Make a poll on here and you'll see how many will admit to loving Hillary and the idea of 8 years of Hillary.

To the experts on here, do you think Hillary will be a one-term president because of health issues? Or will she be all in for the eight year term I have speculated upon (with you know who getting experience in politics to replace her).

Please answer this truthfully. In a hypothetical situation, lets say a genie would assure you 100 percent that the Sox would win the WS next season and make playoffs seven of the next 10 years (only assuring the one WS crown; Sox would have to earn the rest) but the tradeoff is your beloved Hillary would LOSE to Trump and Trump would be president one term. Would you take the deal with the genie? Nothing else would be asked of you. Just this tradeoff.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 5, 2016 -> 07:50 AM) Pretty sure the whole story has her laughing about lie detectors, because that was when she realized not to trust them. She was a public defender at the time. Caulfield's link confirms. I can buy that. To Hillary lovers ... Now that you have the presidency wrapped up, are you a.) thrilled? b.) just relieved Trump the Chump won't be our leader. Are you confident Hillary will lead us to greatness? I know you all hate me for this and hate me in general, but I truly feel she will be impeached within 15 months. Hope we can survive as a nation.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 5, 2016 -> 03:25 AM) Sounds like Montero got drunk and was critical of Maddon on the radio today. That bunt call was insane with two strikes. I do think Maddon and Francona are great great managers, but I also think ALL managers suck in terms of in game decisions. Where I love Maddon and Francona and hate Robin is the big picture. A good manager gets his team ready in spring training and thru his demeanor prevents what I call dysfunctional White Sox baseball. Everyone on Soxtalk knew our season was over after we blew that game when we were 23-10. And it was over. Maddon and Francona might have gotten us to 23-10 but they sure as hell wouldn't have let one game end our season and sure as hell wouldn't let us get simply owned by KC, Cleveland and Detroit year after year.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 5, 2016 -> 04:42 AM) http://www.cbsnews.com/news/hillary-clinto...5-rape-suspect/ So we're now to the point where no political candidate can laugh under any circumstances. If you're a lawyer, there are nuanced cases like this (often taken pro bono) where there's no clear right or wrong. If we jump to the conclusion that any man accused of rape is guilty without a trial and no female lawyer should ever defend someone accused of rape, where does that get us as a society? She wasn't laughing at the defendant or her client. Twitter's ability to allow posters to slant every situation through their own politicized lens is slowly eroding public discourse to the point where there's really no incentive to be honest, rational or even attempt to be objective anymore. And that does it. Larry The Cable Guy and Joe The Plumber are the only ones capable of really fixing this mess, getting under the hood and really giving our entire Federal government an overhaul. Thanks for the post. I'm just wondering if Hillary did this. Sorry I am not following every single allegation and story. Thanks caulfield. Your post was 80 percent telling me what I need to know.

Potential + Effects of the World Series?
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 5, 2016 -> 04:23 AM) Are you serious Greg? You have really never heard this song before? I never saw it. Never heard of it. And I assure you I followed every game regular season and postseason in 05. Pretty much every season since then and before then. I haven't slacked off in my interest in the Sox.

It's amazing how you hear different stuff. CNN has Hillary winning in the landslide I predict. However ABC I think had it tied. Meanwhile, don't shoot the messenger, Hillary fans. But driving tonight I was listening to Hannity and he had a sheriff on blasting Hillary for his behavior in allegedly laughing while representing the guy who raped a 12 year old years ago and the 12 year old was brutally attacked. Is this some sort of bulls*** story or did Hillary really do this? Hannity was playing clips of Hillary laughing, etc., and the sheriff and victim were on and both attacked Hillary. If this story is true, how can you Hillary supporters even consider voting for her? I'm assuming there's a chance it's all true since Hannity spent his whole show on it. I mean, yes, Donald is disgusting, but how can anybody put an X next to Hillary Clinton's name? I also heard Larry the Cable Guy say the U.S. will fall apart completely if she is elected and has eight years to wreck things. So is it over? Will the USA become an utter disaster under Hillary like they say?

Potential + Effects of the World Series?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 4, 2016 -> 02:17 AM) The White Sox have little chance (assuming payrolls stay the same or slightly less) without leveraging Sale and/or Quintana for packages like the Indians received for Bartolo Colon (Sizemore, Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips). Basically, you've got to get at least TWO regulars that are 2.5-3.5 WAR (or more) for that one player, if not three. Otherwise, it doesn't make any sense. Greinke for Cain/Alcides Escobar is yet another example. The Cubs' main risks will be in the bullpen (do they go after Jansen or give the job back to Rondon/Strop/Edwards?)...and the health of the starting rotation, whether Hendricks can sustain his success (expecting another ERA title is foolhardy), but they have numerous plausible ways to cushion the back end of the rotation by trading spare parts and/or adding salary in June/July trades. They absolutely don't have to do much more than target 90-93 wins to outlast the Cards/Pirates, who are both in transitional phases (the Cardinals just cut loose Holliday, the Pirates have to decide what to do with McCutcheon and already traded Melancon). Obviously, their target next season will be 105+ wins, with Arrieta possibly in his last season and Lester perhaps in his final "prime" season before his career arc turns downwards again. Assuming they let Arrieta go after 2017, there are a number of decent options on the FA pitching market, compared to this year. The other danger is losing key front office personnel like Hoyer, McLeod, Randy Bush or Shiraz Rehman, but those guys aren't irreplaceable...every aspiring young baseball exec in the industry would die to work for the World Champion Cubs (for free or even pay for the privilege) and learn under the mentoring of Epstein/Maddon, etc. Why do you think Chapman will go elsewhere? Why do you think they let Arrieta go after 2017? They are loaded with $$$. If they were smart, they would market the hell out of jerseys for Christmas. How many million jerseys could they sell for 50 bucks a jersey? Probably 80 percent of folks in Chicago who follow sports would LOVE a Cubs Christmas gift, expensive CLOTHING. If the Cubs blow this, they are morons. My gosh, the marketing should begin now hot and heavy, advertising HOW to purchase this stuff. Such as easy gift. Cubs sweaters, T shirts, JERSEYS, umbrellas, coffee mugs. My gosh they have to get the WS stuff ready to go now.

2016-2017 Off-season Plans (extensive)
QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 4, 2016 -> 02:58 AM) Damn. This is total firesale mode. That team might not even win 50 games. With the pitching staff in this scenario it might only win 40 games. It would be the worst team by far in baseball history. Lot of good prospects acquired, but would the pitching ever recover to ever make us contenders?

QUOTE (Green Line @ Nov 4, 2016 -> 03:25 AM) Im just so tired of hearing about it at this point. Ive accepted that theyve won, its over. Theyve won the city for good. But Im so tired of everything being Cubs, Cubs, cubs. Every channel, every article. All the small talk at work for the past 2 months, having to grit your teeth as you hear about how this was the greatest world series in the history of the world. It will never end. And all next season we will still have to hear about it Every. Freaking. Day. Just let us Sox fans be in peace. Stop the torment. Yes. But the Sox can stop all the Cubs talk all the time. By winning. We got a lot of attention in 2005. It was nirvana.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 3, 2016 -> 12:02 PM) Oh my goodness. Nobody here has had a problem with the 8 billion bandwagon blackhawks fans that have emerged since 2010. gmab. Are you OK with Hawks fans like me? Went to a ton of games when I was a kid and when I lived in Chicago. But only watch the playoffs now and watched all the playoff games every year we won it. Am I OK or repulsive bandwagoner? As to the thread title. Congratulations Cubs. I truly believe you had the best team. You showed some mettle getting it done after falling down 3-1. You have a great manager, but he's not invincible either. He'd have been attacked everywhere had the Cubs lost that game after the bunt and the use of Chapman the last 2 nights. In conclusion ... congratulations, Cubs and true Cub fans. You won fair and square and now you have the best thing imaginable, a parade and the best offseason of your lives. Nothing better than being champs during the bitterly cold winter months.

Thank goodness. He needs to begin his career after baseball.

Ken Williams Should be on the Hot Seat
KW is a major albatross. We must hire better managers and coaches and scouts and must acquire some GOOD players in free agency, not these stiffs he's been bringing in. Kenny got one WS. Now let him go to the Oakland Raiders or whereever he wants.

Potential + Effects of the World Series?
I'll address the topic name: The Cubs are a goldmine. If they keep the same GM and scouting team and same owner they are in great shape to pretty much at least do what the Blackhawks did. Wasn't that three titles in six years? The Cubs actually can improve next year and likely will easily repeat. Why? A crappy Indians team took them to seven games. The Cubs 'almost' blew that series despite having much more talent than Cleveland. They actually shouldn't be fat and happy next year cause of how they almost blew it this time. It's risky falling behind 3 to 1. Indians could have scraped out one win in the last three games. My guess is Cubs have their best season of the dynasty next season. Then the following year they miss the playoffs. Then they go nuts in free agency, etc. and either win two of the next three or one of the next three. I'll say two. So IMO the Cubs will win it four of six years counting this year. The big question is ... can the Sox actually get its act together and face them in the WS one of those years?? Sox actually have 'some' talent. Where they are blowing it is settling for crap managers (Robin) and run of the mill/average managers at best in Renteria. That hurts. Also very poor GM work. Now is it just luck that the GM moves have reeked or do our GMs suck? I'll say bad luck and give us the benefit of the doubt. Some of the moves looked good on paper. I do think the Sox have a chance to make the WS in one of the next five seasons where we 'could' play the Cubs. It's up to the Sox, really. They are pissing away the Sale/Q era thus far.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Nov 3, 2016 -> 02:41 PM) http://www.denverpost.com/2016/11/02/hilla...new-poll-shows/[/url] From the Denver Post - Clinton and Trump tied in Colorado. 1 in 5 polled would not accept a Clinton victory as legitimate. Jesus. You are a smart attorney. Why are you shocked people think things are rigged? Bernie got screwed, so to speak by the DNC. Hillary gets questions fed to her in debates. Think of all the corruption in Illinois politics. Why wouldn't national politics be the same. It's all crooked.

2016 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 2, 2016 -> 07:06 PM) Some interesting early voting data from a polling firm in Florida--finding a pretty substantial R-crossover voting for Clinton but otherwise acting like a typical Republican voter would (low Obama approval, voting for Rubio). Early voting has looked pretty solid in enough states for Clinton to get to 270 so far, but Florida's been one that hasn't been too promising. If these results are even somewhat accurate, that spells a pretty substantial win for Clinton there but also Rubio holding his seat. This election was wrapped up the day Hillary announced she was running. Bernie had no chance cause of the DNC wanting Hillary and there's no way a Republican will ever win again, much less a bozo like Trump. Why even look at polls, etc. Landslide is assured for the coronation.

World Series: Indians vs. Cubs
QUOTE (whitesoxjr27 @ Nov 3, 2016 -> 05:42 AM) My grandfather who died in 1998 was a big Cubs fan but still rooted for the Sox. I feel him hear with me. I wouldn't give up those memories of going to Wrigley Field with him in the nineteen-eighties for nothing. I like hearing this stuff. When I played Little League from age 10 to 12, my grandpa took me to a ton of Cub games those summers. He didn't have a lot of money, either. The games were so crowded he'd buy us 2 seats together if he could but a lot of time he'd buy singles. We'd sit fairly close to each other and he'd wave to make sure I was OK. He always bought the tickets at the game itself. I don't know if he bought 'em from fans selling or at the windows. I did like the Cubs from 10 to 12 but my dad had Sox season tix and would take me to games as well. I was more of a Sox fan, though I did like going to the Cub games with my grandpa. When we moved to suburbia when I was a junior in high school I was all Sox all the time. Dad kept the Sox season tickets and it was fun going in to games with my friends; I guess my grandpa didn't want to make the drive in from suburbia as he was growing old cause we didn't go to any more Cub games. Anyhow I have no current loyalty to the Cubs. I wanted them to lose frankly. I will give kudos to my grandpa who is gone and my favorite uncle who is gone. My grandpa loved the Cubs but was such a good guy he shut up when people like my dad were screaming about Wrigley Field being a joke of a park and getting drunk and ripping on the Cubs. My grandpa just shut up. Perfect man. Didn't want to fight about politics or the Cubs/Sox. My uncle, my dad's brother, worshiped the Cubs. He would calm my dad down when my dad would start the Cub fights. Of course my uncle was a marine and if there was a fight, he'd have bludgeoned my poor dad who was the older brother. One year when I was an adult I called my uncle and asked him if we could go to a Cub game. I wanted to see Wrigley after many moons. We went to the game. He got us seats right behind the Cubs dugout. A Cardinal hit a home run on the first pitch then the clouds opened. A f***ing rainout. I took the train with him to the game and back home. I hope my uncle and grandpa are made aware of the Cubs title if indeed there is a heaven or afterlife. My uncle died just this year which really sucks. We had a nice conversation about the Cubs at Christmastime and he was really hopeful of them winning a WS. I'd ask him questions about the Cubs to make small talk even though I didn't give a f***. Really sucks he's dead. My grandpa I think was a huge Cub fan, he just didn't let on. Even when we went to the games, he didn't cheer a ton, but he damn well loved those Cubs. In conclusion ... I could be a bandwagon guy and proclaim I was a Cub fan as a kid. I will never do that. GO SOX!!! p.s. I do regret my grandpa burning me one time. We had a Little League game one night and he took me to the Cub game that day and there was a traffic jam after an extra inning game and I didn't get to Mt Greenwood Park til warmups had started. My manager benched my ass for being late and it was a huge huge game. He let me pinch hit in a tie game in extra innings. I drew a walk somehow (I never walked) and they bunted me to second and I scored the winning run on a single. After I scored my manager wasn't even happy he said, "if you are ever late again, you will never get in another game!" Wild memories. GO SOX!!

World Series: Indians vs. Cubs
I'm still trying to figure out how Davis smashed that Chapman pitch for a homer. The Cubs came out after the rain delay and were all calm and focused after meeting in the locker room. I won't blame that though. After not winning since 1908 the Cubs were due for this luck bulls*** to be on their side.

World Series: Indians vs. Cubs
Well, the Cubs finally made the right moves and got an owner willing to spend money and a genius GM in Theo and the best manager in the game in Maddon. So you can see why they won it. Not to make it worse, but we have a horrible cheap owner (albeit maybe he CAN'T spend more; I realize we spend a good amount, but...) we have two horrific GMs who get in each other's way and we had a horrific manager so we had no chance of overachieving like that lousy Indians team did. So the curse was bulls***. The Cubs finally got it right. Owner, check; GM check; manager, check. -- Before you ream me, can u say Ben Zobrist? Uh the Cubs even paid to get HIM and he's Mr. Postseason.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 3, 2016 -> 04:27 AM) I don't mind Rizzo, but his putting his hands on his head with the OMG reminds me of actors when they win an Academy Award and go through the "I have nothing prepared, I never thought I would win" phony routine. Great point. Good post.
