Fraternity Antics: Boys will be boys? No, much Worse
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 1, 2015 -> 10:56 PM) What? Underage drinking in college? You were quite the wildman, Greg. I didn't want to say specifics of what happened when everybody was drunk. I know everybody drinks underage but frats and dorm residents alike can get in trouble if caught having parties where underage are served.

Fraternity Antics: Boys will be boys? No, much Worse
Did you see Michigan fraternity members ran amok at a ski resort and tore the place up to the tune of $400,000 damage? Michigan gave the fraternity a four-year suspension which pretty much kills that frat if pledges are even told that small detail before signing up. My question: In your day, what's the wildest thing done to you in hazing? And what's the craziest thing your frat did to get in trouble? Answer: Our frat had a non hazing policy so the worst they did was lock us out as freshmen and they pelted us with eggs from the roof which hurt like hell if you got hit. We were allowed to go to the stores and get our own eggs to fire back at them on the roof, etc., hence it wasn't technically hazing but more of a fight. I know, pretty mild. Worst thing our frat did: Our house manager was stern and respected so we didn't tear up our own frat too much. I'd say our parties were a little too wild at times and if anybody turned us in we could have gotten in trouble for underage drinking, etc. Additional note: I just read the student paper online. They added this nugget: "There is a pending Michigan State Police investigation that could lead to criminal charges for the fraternities and sororities involved. All Greek members are to be held accountable by the Michigan State Police." Good. The spoiled brats may be charged for trashing a nice resort.

Chris Sale has a foot injury
QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 1, 2015 -> 02:59 PM) After reading more information, I think the writers are confusing tendons with ligaments. The 3 week timeline makes more sense with a ligament avulsion. If this is the case, there will be no long term problems. Wow, we know one thing. He won't be rushed. I bet he misses a month. As Les Grobstein would say, "We'll have to wait and see."

RIP Minnie Minoso
Feel as I did when Ernie Banks died. What great ambassadors for Chicago sports. Rest in peace and peace to all his family members. I mean, Ernie Banks was Mr. Cub. Minoso Mr. Sox. They both leave the world so close together. Minnie was before my time, but as I recall reading about him. When he was activated at age 60 or whenever, didn't he actually get several at bats? Didn't he actually finally hit a single? I know he didn't strike out each at bat he got.

Article on Brian Anderson
QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 28, 2015 -> 04:44 AM) and you saw this and came to this conclusion when he was a rookie??? I probably was excited when he got two hits in his first game, but I thought he had a poor approach at the plate shortly after that.

Article on Brian Anderson
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 27, 2015 -> 03:58 PM) http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hot%20take Perhaps that's incorrect though. This may be a strong take instead. And if it's not apparent, I think greg's post is so obviously over the top absurd, ridiculous, and wrong that I decided to not even bother with an actual response as it appears to me to be more trolling for responses than it does an actual opinion. Here is my actual response: if you feel that it's so damn easy greg, quit your current job and go do it, because teams would gladly pay you millions of dollars a year if you can isolate and identify the top players in the country who will then develop into the top players in the MLB/NFL/NBA/NHL. I'm just saying it's hard to believe so many people thought Anderson had the ability to hit the ball on the big league level. He looked awful at the plate. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 27, 2015 -> 07:19 PM) It really is too bad the NBA won't use the D league as a true minor league. If you are going to draft a Tyrus Thomas type, loaded with potential, but short on actual skill, find a place where he can learn the game. Amen. Why even have the D League the way it is being used?

Article on Brian Anderson
Baseball must truly be the most difficult sport to make it in. And must have the worst talent evaluators of any sport. Here's yet another example. Brian Anderson. You watch this guy hit during his prime and you could tell pretty quick he had no chance. Yet scouts raved about this guy as a 5 tool player. What did scouts see in him? He looked like a pitcher at the plate. He stood straight up and had no clue basically. Pretty good defender though. CJ Henry was a first round pick of the Yankees. One of the worst athletes you'll ever see. All the busts the Sox have had and other teams. These scouts are miserable. The NBA scouts will be rivaling baseball if they keep drafting these college freshmen, though. Just some of these Kansas guys ... Thomas Robinson a top five pick?? Can't play. Julian Wright in lottery? Ha. Xavier Henry lottery? Showed nothing. But the Brian Anderson story is a sad one. He blames his partying choices, etc. I just don't know if the talent was there to hit a moving baseball.

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
As expected, his comments stole the headlines today. So we'll see if it was smart or not later. I don't see how in this day and age anybody anywhere is a shoo in for the playoffs because of the use/overuse of bullpens. I mean if our bullpen is trash, our team will be trash. Same with everybody, including KC. They are now banking on the same formula every night. They want to get to 7/8/9 inning guys every night. No law says those 3 have to be as effective as they were late last season/postseason. I personally would love if baseball/Sox brass would allow its starters to go seven full innings. It's a lot easier to navigate two innings than 3 or 4 IMO. If our closer is as good as expected, we'd be in great shape just getting through the eighth. I realize that is an impossibility; starters only go six nowadays or six and change.

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
QUOTE (RaySox @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 10:17 PM) After the offseason we've had, I surely would hope our manager expects us to make the playoffs, or at least say so... think of how he would sound saying "I expect us to be a .500 team" or "I expect us to compete but we'll probably miss the playoffs." Wouldn't sound very nice This truly will be my last post on the matter. But don't some of you read responses? I gave you an example of the answer he might have given where there would be no story and it would be a vanilla answer that said nothing. I'm logging off now so I don't post anymore on this thread. I'm OK with Robin being brash. I just think in most cases u are better off giving the media nothing in the post Ozzie way of dealing with media. If Robin wants to go fiery and brash this year, bring it on baby!

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 10:09 PM) If my manager continually gave canned bulls*** answers like that, I'd lose a hell of a lot of respect very quickly. I thought most managers talked like that.

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 10:05 PM) After the debacles and the team seemingly not caring for parts/all of the last 2 years, the tone needed changed. I can buy that. I'll take it. We'll see how it plays out. The Vegas thing concerned me when I read their low expectations for the Sox.

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 09:58 PM) If Ozzie says this, greg is getting a bronze statue commissioned and commending him for being so awesomely brash. Ventura says it, and greg cites Vegas and mopes about how bad he expects them to be. I already mentioned Ozzie in my initial reaction post, saying that's why I'm not incensed Robin said it. I'm just saying you're better off using coachspeak. Q: Robin do you expect the playoffs this year? Is this a playoff team? A: "I absolutely love the acquisitions the front office made, just love them. I'm anxious to get on the field and getting to work with these guys. I know we're going to have a group that wants to win as many games as possible. Obviously we'd love that to result in a postseason appearance. The goal every year is to win the World Series." With my answer, the media has no story. That said, I loved the brash Ozzie, so I'll take the brash Robin as I said before.

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 09:50 PM) Last year, Vegas's preseason predictions missed the average team's win total by >6. The largest underestimate was 19 wins. I love the Sox, but there's no way Robin should be expecting playoffs with this club. Sox have to come out and play ball and reverse the mojo from the last few horrific seasons.

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 09:33 PM) His bosses went out and picked up every item on their offseason shopping list, he better say he expects to make the playoffs. Vegas says we're a .500 team and u better believe Vegas is right most all the time.

Ventura "I expect us to make the playoffs"
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 08:23 PM) Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan 38m38 minutes ago Robin Ventura: "I expect us to make the playoffs. I expect us to make a good run at it and make the playoffs." It's better to use coachspeak than say something like that, but hey, I never complained about Ozzie's brashness, so I'll take it from Robin, too, I guess.

Relationship Advice Thread
QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 15, 2015 -> 08:35 PM) Valentine's Day brings out the absolute worst people in the world. I am a server and the trash I dealt with last night was unbelievable. I heard so many racist comments from my coworkers last night. Avoid restaurants on Valentines Day everyone. That's incredible, Rabbit. If you are not going to play the 15-20 percent tip game, you shouldn't go out and be a customer. Please PM me details.

Charles Barkley declares war with SABR nerds/quants
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 12, 2015 -> 05:30 AM) This is my favorite SoxTalk soliloquy of the year so far. Anytime greg is mentioned as somebody's "favorite" of the year means it is a good day for me.

Brian Williams suspended 6 months w/o pay
He should be taken off the air for good. You can't lie about that kind of s***. Didn't he agree to a six-month work stint without pay? Amazing the egos of these rich anchors. They probably would work for nothing when you get down to it just to keep their egos satisfied. I mean how can you make up such a story? Ridiculous.

The Republican Thread
Did any of u folks see Brownback's latest? He took away the law that protects lesbians and gays from being fired just because they are lesbian or gay. The people of Kansas (morons that most are) just recently re-elected this Brownback cat. Yes we re-elected a guy who has the state in its most dire straights financially in history, a guy who wants to rescind rights for groups that have had protected rights. Would any of you leave the state because of this embarrassing man and idiots who re-elected him for one reason: The name 'REPUBLICAN.' I am thinking about it.

Charles Barkley declares war with SABR nerds/quants
What some of you Sabes people must realize is a lot of us, including Barkley, do not give a s*** about advanced stats. I mean some of it is interesting, but I think what Charles is saying is a ballplayer knows a good ballplayer when he sees one. Believe me, I don't need advanced stats to tell me Rios or Dunn are good players. I happen to SEE them play and can tell you they are not. I'm not a big WAR guy obviously. When I see Adam Dunn whiff as much as he did as a Sox, and the fact he as our big gun never sniffed a postseason, tells me a lot. I don't need advanced stats telling me he was good or some such. Again, if you watch your favorite team all year, you know who is good and who is bad. That's my take. The Sabes people should be more tolerant of us Sabes haters or Sabes dislikers.

Farewell to Dayan Viciedo
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Feb 8, 2015 -> 03:02 PM) It wasn't that long ago everyone would call one of our world series pitchers Judy garland all the time. Man I hated that. I always fought back when somebody stepped on Garland.

James Shields
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 03:53 AM) Bob Nightengale @BNightengale 2m2 minutes ago The #Padres, where James Shields makes his home, have to be considered favorites for his services. We will soon find out if they get him. Makes too much sense. If that's his home why wouldn't he sign there? He's got all the money he'll ever need. Sign his 4 year 60 million dollar deal and be done with it.
