  1. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 01:05 AM) IF we didn't have Adam Dunn, he would put up decent numbers as a DH. In Sept, put Dunn in the pen. With the team stinking as much as ever and the bullpen in need of a lefty, that's a cool idea. The fans would love it and ultimately it doesn't matter much. If indeed this is Dunn's final season it'd be a fun way to go out, as a reliever. -- MLB annoys me with running the same commercials over and over. It's like torture to me.
  2. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 03:41 AM) Tyler's "Magic Glasses Phase" will be the only thing keeping his average above .215 by season's end. And as I type this, he singles. He really turned on that pitch. He's not a good hitter, but his streaks make him an interesting hitter. I wonder if he'll ever make it in the league. John Buck lasted a long time and he can't hit. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 03:47 AM) Why does Hawk think Sanchez looks like Ordonez? He looks more like Avi with the air let out. Good line. I love Sanchez's lively bat on that base hit. --Hilarious how quiet it is at the Cell. Amazing how some sports (football and hockey; Bears n Hawks) the fans make noise but baseball it's like a library. Nice play by Conor there.
  3. I was surprised Conor didn't put one of those pitches in play. Seemed like he had little velocity on those pitches. Tank looked like he was hustling on the DP, but he's mighty slow. Another team problem. Some plodders (yes I realize my fave, Paulie, leads the tortoise attack).
  4. What's wrong with the White Sox? This team is struggling big time. Has it run out of gas, especially the pitchers? Dropping games left and right of late. Avi baby with a double, though!
  5. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 07:54 PM) As far as I'm concerned, the seat comes with the functionality so the passenger is fully entitled to use it. That doesn't mean pull it up and down a million times, but you are entitled to your space. No reason to throw water in the persons face though. It proves anything can happen to delay your trip. Here you are in the air, thinking everything is on time and life is good and ... boom, two passengers force the plane to be re-routed. There's nothing worse than going to the airport for a return flight home and see "canceled" or "delayed" next to your flight on the big board. Travel is great ... once you arrive at your destination.
  6. A woman throws water in the face of this guy because he blocked her from reclining her seat. So the plane has to get diverted to throw them both off the plane. Think of all the people inconvenienced, missing connections, etc. It reminds me once I had to sit in the middle seat on a Southwest flight because two guys got in a scrap about the overhead. One guy had luggage and asked who had a coat up in the bin he wanted to move. Some guy said, "It's my coat and it's not moving!" So the other guy with the luggage said, "You are an asshole!" It turned out of course they both were in my row so I quickly offered to move to the middle seat to separate them and I got crushed the whole trip. Have you all ever seen rage on planes from passengers? And are you, as I am, appalled at the new planes with NO LEG ROOM??? It is a disgrace and airlines should be ashamed of themselves. It truly is disgusting. http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/26/travel/unite...pt=hp_inthenews
  7. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 01:22 PM) Greg, wtf are you talking about? Please read the following carefully: Gordon Beckham is a below average major league player by any statistic, both advanced and traditional. The only reason people are saying he is better than most #8 picks is because most #8 picks don't ever even make it to the Majors. The whole point being made is that even holding down a job as a mediocre player is something of an accomplishment. This has NOTHING to do with advanced metrics. I've never come across anyone who can hold a personal grudge against something as consistently as you. I mean seriously, if your car won't start, do you blame WAR? Do you blame Adam Dunn? Thanks. I am glad all metrics indicate he is a below average player.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 07:03 PM) Real simple statement in reply. The only time I want this team spending money in the free agent market is the offseason I think they're ready to compete. If you don't have that, then you're spending money just to spend money. I don't see that yet. Too many holes to fill, too many kids to insert. With the limited number of options on the FA market, you just can't fill out a roster mostly in that way. Free Agency has to fill the last pieces, not be the foundation. Do you think that signing James Shields and replacing Noesi with him makes this team competitive next year if it is teamed with $10 million worth of guys for the bullpen? That's a $30 million+ payroll boost and it still leaves a lineup loaded with kids, holes in the OF, relying on guys like Danks and Rodon in the rotation, and a bullpen that might still be average at best. Given one more year, we might have Rodon ready to go 200 innings, we'll be down to the wire on Danks's contract making him more easily replaced, we might well have filled some of those bullpen holes internally, and we'll hopefully have a better idea of whether guys like Sanchez, Micah, Marcus can hang in the bigs. Your position makes a lot of sense. Just curious though. Would you be for more aggressive fiscal spending on salaries if the Sox were owned by somebody with deep pockets like the Rangers' owner or Cuban? Is this a Jerry thing where you are hoping to save him a buck til the team is close to contention or would you feel the same way if the Sox had a rich owner?
  9. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 02:03 PM) Well, #1, I'm sure he can because shoe shining is not difficult. #2, you failed to understand. If the Sox DIDN'T have Konerko on the roster, they could have used a guy who plays the infield a bit better as a backup and then they could have had Jordan Danks on the roster all year long too. Not that it matters in the loss column - they may have won a few more games - but because of Konerko's inability to play anything but 1B, they needed someone to play all over the diamond. Players with that ability don't always hit well. Enter Leury Garcia. If Paul Konerko is not on this roster, Leury Garcia is not on this roster. Thus, you are being incredibly hypocritical talking about the shortcomings of this team while applauding Konerko and his "veteran presence" on the bench because those two events are tied together. They are mutually inclusive events. There is cause and effect - the cause is that Paul Konerko is on the roster, so the effect is that Leury Garcia is also on the roster. Do you understand this yet or should I keep expounding? I liked your cause and effect, and enjoyed your analysis here, but let's do this for DeAza. Let's do it for Tank. Let's do it for Beckham. There are a lot of guys on the roster 'blocking' other guys who can't play the game of baseball effectively. I happen to think Paulie was not exactly the worst player on the team.
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 03:19 AM) The majority owner of the Texas Rangers is the 296th richest person in America with a net worth of $1.9 billion. For some reason I doubt he's very stupid. Well, if he wants to give his money away I wish he'd give me some. Choo certainly wasn't worthy of all those millions of dollars. At least I could have sold beer in the stands and had some value. Prince Fielder is a walking time bomb with all that weight and yet he also was paid some zillion dollar contract and I suspect he's about done as well unless he reinvents his body when he gets healthy again.
  11. QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 04:14 AM) I have a hard time believing you aren't trolling. You have to pay attention to the MLB enough to see what kind of contracts players are signed too. He came off a season with an .885 OPS. Dude had a .423 OBP. He was extremely valuable. You somehow go off on a tangent about how advanced stats suck. SO MANY players would be cut if teams could cut guys like in the NFL. That is a ridiculous comment. Did you see the kind of year he had for 19 million? You think he's going to get any better the next six years? Yes, he'd be cut if he was on an NFL team so they wouldn't have to pay the money.
  12. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 04:08 AM) Fine them, pick games played in MLB as your metric for a #8 pick and the distribution will be similar -- for an 8th pick, Gordon was better than most. It's hard for me to believe you can be this dense. It's not necessarily about WAR, although as a measure of total value it's better than games placed WAR is mostly a counting stat and MLB players that are below replacement (hint: it's a sign the stat is pretty accurate) don't tend to last too long in MLB so games played will work fine. You should really learn more about MLB, no offense. Trying to argue Gordon Beckham wasn't a good draft pick isn't going to get you anywhere, go through every #8 pick in history and Beckham is going to lineup on the "better than most" side. here, educate yourself: basically, it's not a normal distribution, that's the takeway. It's a "fat tail" and value is clumped in picks 1-3 and in general in the top 15. Would you put the over/under on Rodon's career fWAR at 15? According to the graph that would be a wild over estimate. That said, Carlos could skew the results http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2013/6/25...are-draft-picks I want to ask you. Throw out all these metrics. You watched him play for these many ways. Do you personally feel ... do your eyes tell you Gordon Beckham was IN ANY WAY a valuable member of the White Sox? Like I said if he is a good No. 8 pick throughout history, then baseball GMs are worst than I thought. But please answer my personal question, this time using no metrics at all. Your opinion of Gordon Beckham from what you saw .... and others that cite stats that say he's good please comment as well.
  13. QUOTE (LDF @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 11:08 AM) hey greg, I enjoy reading your post, but this time you are wrong. be cool. peace OK. It just drives me crazy is all. QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 08:05 PM) I'd say right now Putnam, Petricka, and Guerra are all locks. Webb probably sticks around for at least a month or 2. The rest are such a mystery. If the Sox think they can compete, I'm all about trying to sign/trade for a closer, a good LH reliever, and a straight up loogy. Even 3 new additions is a tall order in one year, but I hope it happens. I'd let those 3 guys go and go for an all new crew. If I had to keep one, it'd be Putnam I guess. QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 11:56 PM) Exactly, so is trying to lose a bunch of games at the end of a season worth a shot a Beckham, who is better than most #8 picks? With all due respect, Beckham is a great argument against advanced stats. You can't tell me he was valuable to the White Sox in any way during his tenure. You can't tell me we couldn't have had a different second baseman every one of those years with the same impact on the team. Some minimum salary free agent each year. I mean, cmon. If Beckham is considered valuable in any way, that advanced stat is just WRONG. Seriously. There has to be some value to the eye test and the common stat. Beckham was a lousy No. 8 draft pick. If he's better than most, than teams have drafted poorly at No. 8 that is FOR SURE. Enough is enough. How can anybody say Beckham was valuable in any way? He was a decent to good fielder who couldn't hit a lick. Why do we need WAR to tell us some fib??
  14. I truly don't care about team payrolls cause I have no sympathy for owners who blatantly rip off the fans. That said, I laugh at this Choo contract. Look what he produced this year for all that $$. Owners of sports teams are so stupid. They set the market for this crap. THE CASE FOR CHOO -- Rangers signed him to 7 year, 130 mill deal last winter (hilarious). He's finished for the season in which he hit .242 with 13 home runs, 40 RBIs. So is some advanced-stat lover going to tell me his on base percentage of .340 makes him worth that cash?? In football, he'd be cut so fast this offseason it'd make your head spin.
  15. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 05:22 PM) Sox are currently sitting at the #10 pick. We are 4.5 GB of a top 5 pick. Let's go Dbacks, Red Sox, Cubs, Phillies, Twins, and whoever the Sox are playing on non-Chris Sale days! QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 05:32 AM) Today the Sox gained a game on.... Rangers, Rockies, Cubs, and Phillies. Sox are now 8.5 GB of the #1 pick, and 4.5 GB of the #5 pick. People get on me for being repetitious. What about you? We get it. You are not embarrassed by the pathetic play of your favorite team and want them to lose to get a better phantom draft pick. Why do you have to offend me by posting that fact all the time. Just.Win.White.Sox.
  16. QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 03:30 AM) I disagree with this as an absolute. It makes a difference for many players. However, in this case, I agree. Beckham always had that "hitch" in his swing. I t prevented him from hitting good fastballs Once the league figured it out, he refused to make an adjustment. I agree with ptatc. Billy Butler apparently hits better when he gets to play first base. I agree it didn't matter much for Gordon. Wasn't he a shortstop in college? He shoulda been used to moving around. He's been a second baseman for a while now, and a pretty good one, and still can't hit. It can't be because he once played third.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 02:03 AM) Brick is hard to burn and a smart place should have insurance to cover that. The buildings should survive. I hope they all have insurance. During the next set of riots, it would be easy to just get out a match, pour some vodka on the floor, toss the lit match on it near some cardboard displays and get out of there; I'd think the place would be gutted.
  18. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 07:35 PM) http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/26356603...aded-journalist That would be so awesome if we could catch this guy, try him and fry him. How could we prove it was him, though. He'd probably get off.
  19. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 01:30 PM) I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but the Yankees should do something. The Cubs did something. And the four division teams should do something for Konerko in September. When he comes to KC for the final series, the Royals should give him some small token. He's hit a lot of home runs vs. Kansas City. I think they should give him some coupons to all the great legendary BBQ joints in town before Game One of the series. Maybe he could get away the day of the second and third games of the series for lunch. Have George Brett greet him at home plate with a signed ball from he and the current Royals saying thanks for the memories and give him the BBQ.
  20. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 02:40 PM) I've said his since we moved him away from 3B but Beckham belongs there, great D and put up great numbers, there was no need to move him, in the case he bats around .260-.270 next year on a different team at 3B with 12-15 HRs and 25-30 2Bs with roughly 60-70 RBIs, how pissed will you be and at whom? I'll be pissed at KW and RV at an extreme level, maybe even Ozzie I won't be pissed at anybody if he learns how to hit and becomes good. It would be annoying if somehow he turns into a .330 hitter with 24 home runs and 90-plus ribbies. That would annoy me and think perhaps it is our hitting coach's fault or something. Ultimately I won't be mad. This is on Gordon.
  21. Was Buck available? He's done wonders in Baltimore. He's one of the few difference makers on the bench IMO. I wouldn't mind Thome. That would be cool if we have to keep picking ex-Sox. And Ozzie as his third base coach! Bring it on. That said, I do feel sorry for Robin and can stomach him being skipper the next 10 years or so. Why? Cause he's been given this horrific roster. Robin does know baseball, folks. Believe that at least.
  22. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) When I was trying out for the basketball team in 8th grade the coach said practice is 5 to 7 meaning 5 to 7PM . Not having had much experience with organized sports to that point I thought he meant 5 minutes to 7 or 6:55 . My point ? Lack of experience Hope the coach forgave you and gave you another tryout date. I'd hate to get cut for an honest mistake.
  23. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 11:44 PM) In part your right, but I think he could have worded it a Lil different. Next one gone Viciedo I didn't watch it, but top 10 draft picks in the first round of the big league draft naturally tend to be cocky when talking about their own careers, especially when they are on the line. Think about it ... Beckham has had his butt kissed, figuratively speaking, since he was a high school freshman probably. It's got to be a bitter pill to finally get released and deemed a failure (with at least one team). Addendum: I just now read the article and listened to to the interview. Geez, he felt pressure in Chicago? There wasn't much pressure, give me a break. Our fans never booed him or anything. He was popular considering how lousy a hitter he was. He didn't seem like a prick in the interview, but cmon Gordon, praise your former teammates and organization a bit please, considering you are one of the reasons the lineup has been horrific the last few seasons.
  24. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 23, 2014 -> 04:42 PM) Konerko had a lengthy interview this morning. http://thegamechicago.com/2014/08/23/koner.../#axzz3BEVFTZJj Great interview. He is pure class.
  25. QUOTE (Señor Ding-Dong @ Aug 23, 2014 -> 09:38 PM) He's too young and too far away from the majors to use the errors he's making now as a reason why he won't be our SS in the future. His bat is too good to ignore; we can only hope he continues to improve his glove as he moves through the minors. I've heard good things about Anderson's athleticism defensively so it appears the potential for improvement is there. Micah's no gold glover either, but that doesn't stop people from pegging him as the future 2B. I said it before, but we need to find a way to fuse Anderson and Rondon into one player. Seriously, get on this science. This talk of defense is scaring me. If Micah is no good at second and Anderson no good at short ... wow. You must have good defense up the middle to win squat in MLB.
