QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 27, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) If he had to choose, he may have chosen to go in as a member of the Cubs, but the Hall of Fame chooses now. Yes, it started when guys such as Dawson and I believe Boggs were putting clauses in the contracts to go in as Marlins or Devil Rays. I have no doubt Dawson would have wanted to go in as a Cub because IMO it would have meant more money for him in appearances signatures etc...
-
Dawson to go in to the HOF as an Expo, not a Cub. Probably cost Andre a little money for signatures, etc, but if you look at the numbers probably the right decision, but an argument can be made for the Cubs since he was an MVP for them and with WGN he was brought more fame with the Cubs.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 05:23 PM) This is a great move by the Cards. If anyone can save this kid and his miracle curve it's Dave Duncan. I said it when Cubbie fans were going ape over him his first time through the league, he really needs a far better 3rd pitch, 2nd time around hitters were just sitting on the fastball and taking the curve, he had nothing else working.
-
Well, Ben Sheets got his 1 year and very good money (rumor was he was looking for a contract like he got from the A's or 2 years at less money). So looks like the lure of playing for the Cubs for the 1 year and like 4-5m they wanted to sign him to didn't work!

I didn't think Jim was some magical answer, but he was a far better alternative to the rotating DH, IMO. Unfortunately I think the White Sox are going to find out they're a bat short, fortunately the division will allow them to hang around. In the end they'll end up using prospects to fill the hole.

QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 04:20 PM) Please Please Please! on one of the local radio shows Scott Merkin was on, said somebody asked about Damon in the townhall meeting thing today and it was shot down.

QUOTE (since56 @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 09:13 AM) Does anyone know the dimensions of the Twins new ballpark? With Mauer, Morneau, and Kubel (all lefties) perhaps they have a short right field porch. Thome would fit that plan. I think B& B yesterday mentioned it's 328

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 10:12 PM) I agree that another bat seems to be a pretty obvious need right now. Then again, if Bobby Jenks pitches like he used to pitch and Linebrink comes back strong and Thornton stays were he's at, and Putz gets back to what he was in 2006-7 and Pena pitches like Cliff Politte in 2005, they won't have to score many runs, but as we all know chances are that doesn't happen. There are always some surprises and some dissappointments every season. I agree, but I think the Cell is a major X factor... also, I think they need another bat and I am counting on baseball oddness of a hitter having a career year as well, in the AL they just seem a little lacking to me. Nothing major, just another good stick. It would help to have a good OBP and take some pitches because they are a little lacking in that right now, and with that formula it makes it easy for an opposing manager to get his starter through 7 and avoid the soft part of most pens.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 09:51 PM) Thanks for the critique. I'm just curious why the responsibility has changed. I'm hoping its all BS because they really need another hitter. I have a feeling if Thome signs elsewhere the Sox will be in the division race and deal for a bat giving up good prospects.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 09:28 PM) But Ozzie is the 3rd man on the totem pole. Ultimately its KW's responsibilty with JR's OK to mold the roster, or why even bother paying him? Let him hang out at Market. If they decide they want to give Ozzie the responsibilty of making the roster, then KW and/or JR should utimately be responsible for that decision. Bobby Cox has had tremendous success as a manager, but was pretty much a bust as a GM. It used to be up to Konerko and Thome if they wanted to add to the roster. Ozzie had no idea KW even claimed Rios on waivers. Its very curious, but I think ultimately they will get another player. They have already come out and said they have the funds for another player. Usually we hear the exact opposite. Whether its Thome or someone else who can play the field, someone is coming in. It would definitely be a move away from what they normally do, but this is such a stark contrast to KW's rosters that something is different, especially when JR was in the paper last week saying they had money for a player if they needed it.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 09:20 PM) It does seem that way, but it would be silly to blame the manager if the season wasn't a success because the personnel wasn't up to snuff. well it depends, if KW and JR went to Ozzie and said you could have player X or Y and Ozzie opted for certain types of players than it is Ozzie's choice. Not sure if they're giving him that much say so, but I would have to believe if this is the roster going into the season Ozzie had some say in it.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 09:15 PM) That new Cowley piece really is something. It's almost like they openly want 2010 to be all on Guillen. It's his baby To wreck or succeed with Cowley said that that when he was on B & B today too. I wonder if the possibility of Thome going to the Twins instead a team out of the division might make KW sign him.

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 03:59 PM) why is that? last yr, which was the final yr in the dome, they were in the race till the last game of the season, and they still only drew 2.3mil. i know people will want to see the new stadium this yr but the weather does get bad there and if they arent good, people wont go. even when theyre good, its still hard for them to draw fans I don't have the numbers in front of me, but they had to struggle to build the new stadium, I have no doubt they did studies to prove that people will show up, I'm not saying it's going to be a long term thing, but at least for the first year it will sell tickets by itself. I imagine they got a good boost in season tickets, so that will boost numbers in crappy weather and I imagine they built it to maximize revenue.

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 03:52 PM) mauer and morneau cant even do that, i doubt thome will lol well, the new ball park will take care of that for a few years, well past when Thome will be retired

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 03:34 PM) Well, they're handpicking his opponents. Not surprised. About Brock, I'm happy he's back. Until his interviews turned into him being so anti-healthcare for everyone. We get it Brock, you're not for it. Now that he's healthy, I can go back to hoping Mir kicks his ass this summer. I know, I just hope Strikeforce picks that up a little, I want to see better matchmaking, but I understand their roster isn't crazy deep. It can come back to bite you, happened a little with Cung Le, they can get a little mileage out of Smith, but if Simms can pull an upset, which through experience he has a chance, it can derail that train real quick

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 02:42 PM) Cowley just tweeted the Jenks looks 25 pounds lighter. If Jenks is solid the White Sox pitching staff has a chance to be awesome -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 02:33 PM) JR, KW and Ozzie said no to Thome, and it makes me happy. Sorry Jim, probably time to retire. OK, I can understand saying no to Jim due to his age and from what I heard the massive physical effort it takes him to get ready just to DH for a game, but Rock, what is your opinion on the Sox line-up as constructed? Do you think they're a bat short?

QUOTE (b-Rye @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 02:27 PM) Jose Contreras to Phillies pending physical...... wonder if Thome's next. if he stay in one piece in the NL for a full season he'll be OK. I'm not sure what Thome would do on a NL team full time.

QUOTE (PeavyTime @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 02:18 PM) The Phillies pitched lights out in October which is why they won. Don't get me wrong, Thome could hit. We most likely would have won in 2005 if we had him instead of Carl/Frank. But championships are won with pitching and defense. And Thome add nothing to either category. so you don't have to ever score any runs or just win all games by 1-0 or 2-1 type scores? There's a balance to be had, by definition you have to score runs to win games. The Sox pitching staff had good numbers last year and the team was woefully short. Also, the fact that a team with Derek Jeter at SS won the world series last year (although he played slightly better, but he's still a below average SS) should show that you can still win with some poor D. IMO what will happen is the pitching will keep them in a bad division (even if the Twins add Thome, they're not running away with anything) and around the deadline KW will realize they're a bat short, trade Hudson and/or Flowers for a good bat and there will be a mass riot on this board. Dan Bernstein made a good point today, basically this is Ozzie's year, he got the type of team he wanted, if he falls flat on his face, which obviously I hope does not happen, it could be his last year. I don't think it's a terrible idea, except the 800 lb. gorilla in the room that they play 81 games at the Cell.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 09:29 AM) If I remember right Mir did have one really good kick or punch to Brocks face that for a second or two had him dazed but it also led to Mir being taken down which lead to the end of the fight as well. Carwin will be a big test for Mir though, its the one guy in the UFC who is as big as Brock even though he isnt near the athlete, if Mir looks as dominant as he did vs Kongo I'll be looking forward to a 2nd rematch. I think it was a flying knee Mir launched when he had Brock against the cage, that stunned Brock a little, but yeah, Mir totally screwed himself out of good position.

I think the lineup really needs more pop, I really want them to bring Thome back.

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templa...9&zoneid=13 Brock will be back in either May or the summer. Winner of Carwin/Mir if the winner isn't struggling with an injury or the winner of Cain/Big Nog. Also looks like Florian/Gomi for UFN 21... as far as I can tell this is not the Vs. card, they're not calling the Vs. card an "UFN" but this will be on Spike
