  1. it's weird that Cowley said the 7m would take the Sox out of the equation, but a month or two ago didn't JR say in an interview there's more money left if they feel there's a player who could help them win?
  2. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 05:58 PM) Heyman seems to agree, he just mentioned that the Tigers' offer may be north of $14M over 2 years but that Damon may prefer a 1 year deal. it would be interesting to see what a one year deal might come in at, this isn't a 29 year old coming off a down year or a major injury, this is a guy in his mid 30's who, even if he has another good year, will be a year older next offseason, he has a limited time to make that money back. If I had to guess he ends up with the Tigers for that 2 year somewhere around 14 or with the Tigers for a 1 year 10m.
  3. WSCR is now saying "executives" seem to think he will end up with the Tigers at the 2/14
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 04:24 PM) Of course, the 2/14 number might not be right either. that is definitely true, I just don't see the White Sox getting in any type of bidding war for him, I just see the Tigers giving the extra year or extra million or two
  5. It's a Boras client, I take every media report with a grain of salt. I could easily see him wanting to get more $$ out of the Tigers so he leaks the White Sox as interested. I would really like if Damon was on the White Sox, I think it would make perfect sense and make the team better, however I just don't see it happening with the 2/14 deal being reported, I don't see the Sox beating that.
  6. If anyone is going to be in a Towel Drill Fantasy League, you may have your first pick!!
  7. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 10:07 AM) The Cubs should have looked into getting an actual 2b and some serviceable innings eaters to replace Harden and Lilly (for the moment), instead, i'll just sit back and enjoy the inevitable debacle that's sure to follow. although Cubs fans are under the impression that Ricketts is just going to have an open checkbook the Cubs could basically only add money that they got rid of, especially considering they had a bunch of guys who got raises through arb or avoiding arb.
  8. I think it's a nice gesture, and with it likely being mentioned on broadcasts, a great way for people unfamiliar with Apparicio to learn about him.
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 11:33 AM) you are speaking of modern day u.s. cellular field, we are talking about spring training facilities. Didn't the Sox just get a new place with the Dodgers? How did that work financially? (I really have no idea how it worked, didn't pay that much attention).
  10. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 10:53 AM) Darn right. Jerry as far as I know, paid for his own stadium. Me thinks Ricketts should not have bought the team. He's trying to get everyone else to pay for them and will be cutting payroll two years in a row. They won't fire Hendry, even though he doesn't fit in with that philosophy because it would cost more money to do so and replace him. I was a little young when it went down, but I'm pretty sure the White Sox got the state to pay for most of the stadium then got an awesome lease agreement with them.
  11. It wasn't me, it was a friend, but it's a boob story so I will post it. My 2 friends and I were at a WCW event years ago at the United Center and a women was yelling about flashing her boobs for about five minutes between the undercard and the live show, both me and my friends were looking right at her the whole time, she flashed, and right after my friends said "I missed it." I have zero idea how he missed it, but it lives in the lore of inside jokes over 10 years later.
  12. Trigg is probably an underdog in what is a pretty even fight IMO because casual U.S. fans know who Sera is and aren't familiar with Trigg. The two fights he had with Hughes were right before and during UFC's upswing in popularity, then he associated himself with PRIDE for its last few years. Also, from a fight standpoint, Trigg's stand-up isn't an advantage over Serra, and Serra has excellent BJJ, so if it becomes a grapple fest or Trigg wants to GNP him from a guard or half guard Serra could pull a sub. Again, I think it's a coin toss match and if I was forced to bet I would take Trigg only because he's the underdog and could make some money on it. As for the main I could see it going either way and I like both fighters. If forced to pick, I would take Randy, just because i could see wrestling canceling each other out and Randy is slicker in his dirty boxing. This will be the first UFC I've missed in awhile. Going out for a good friends b-day tomorrow and doesn't look like the bar will be showing it. A little disappointed to miss it since I am very interested in the main and Nate is one of my favorite fighters, but between the 4 sick cards the UFC have scheduled between March 21 and April 10 and the Strikeforce card in April I will be scheduling around those some, so needed to let one go!!
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 3, 2010 -> 09:00 PM) Was Verlander a year closer to FA than Felix? I have difficulty figuring out why he'd be more expensive otherwise. When I first heard the numbers I thought it was a lot, especially considering he's roughly 3 years older than Felix. I think Verlander is an excellent pitcher, don't get me wrong, just my initial feeling.
  14. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 1, 2010 -> 04:30 PM) It is a good sign for baseball's smaller markets. I also think it is bad for baseball in one way. One of the best talents is in one of the smallest TV markets. I can see that, but ESPN and MLB Network promo the hell out of the guy.
  15. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 31, 2010 -> 01:09 PM) Have to remember for his first ever fight and only a few months of training, Walker was pretty damn impressive. Obviously he has a lot to improve on if he wants to continue his mma career but you dont become great overnight. He apparently is still in amazing shape so be interesting if he continues to train and fight again, he obviously didnt take any damage in the match that would slow him down. I don't see how I have to "remember" any of that stuff since it's basically what I said. My point is I have zero interest in watching it.
  16. I think the minimum the government owes us at this point is new hearings on legalizing marijuana. Some of these laws have been around for so long that I think they need review. Let both sides state their cases, there's too much money being spent on enforcement and in the traffic of it without, as far as I can see, many positive results. I'm fully aware there are other illegal narcotics out there and I don't think perfect harmony would break out if weed was legalized, but I think it's at the point where the whole policy has to be reexamined and new laws have to be written.
  17. QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Jan 31, 2010 -> 11:52 AM) I've only watched a handful of MMA fights and I could even tell that Walker looked to have issues when fighting. Anyone think they gave Walker a terrible opponent to make sure he had a great chance at winning? Whatever the case is, Walker looked to be in awesome shape, especially for a near 48 year old. they tried a few opponents, but the AC was real strict about who they would OK a fight with. Yes, he is in tremendous shape for a 48 year old, but I agree with what Jay Glazer twittered, basically he said that he loves when people give the sport a try, but the sport is getting to big for spectacles like that. I agree, I don't begrudge Walker in any way, but it kind of makes the sport look bad when that fight and the Lashley fights are shown on a big card.
  18. Agree with most of the feelings posted already on last nights card. The Lawler/Melvin fight was entertaining as was the Diaz fight. Melvin has to be a little worried that stand-up is basically his only thing and he lost a stand-up fight, even if it was on a tremendous punch. When he signed with Strikeforce Meltzer wrote that Rogan was pushing Dana and others at the UFC to sign him but they thought he was too one dimensional. Diaz continues to improve, hopefully Strikeforce makes some fun matches with him. I agree, I don't really care about female MMA, so that fight had little to offer and even beyond that it wasn't a very good fight, not bad, but not good. The Simms/Lashley fight was a joke. Strikeforce can't promote matches like that if they wanted to be taken seriously. I watched with a room full of casual at best MMA fans and they all laughed, not in a good way, when they saw Simms and that he was fighting Lashley. Walker fight was silly too. If either of those guys had a decent level of skill it would have been over in the first, either Walker should have finished from the top or Nagy should have grabbed his arm that was just hanging there and ripped it off. It was on Showtime, which I have, and I got two enjoyable fights out of it, so I don't want to complain too much.
  19. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 30, 2010 -> 06:51 PM) Why was JD going to be a bench player? RF was open for him to start. They don't have Bradley anymore, remember? Yes, I remember perfectly well that they don't have Bradley anymore, I also remember they have Fukudome who they are moving over there, it's why they got Byrd to play center and when the rumors were going around that's what the sources were telling Levine and the guys on the score. Fukudome is making around 10m and Dye would have been around 3m, they would have given Fukudome every chance to lose that spot
  20. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 29, 2010 -> 11:02 PM) Turns out JD turned down the Cubs' $3.3 million offer. I wonder why... with Sheets and Dye the Cubs were hoping that the myth that it's an honor to play for the Cubs was true and players would take less money or less of a role than they are looking for. Dye has said all along he wants to play the OF and be a regular player, so why would he go to the Cubs and be a 4th OF? If there's no offers for him out there for full time OF I could see him bending a little and playing a majority DH somewhere and occasional OF duty and if he can't find that, I wouldn't be shocked if he just retired. I still think the best fit for JD is San Francisco. I know he struggles in the OF, but it's the NL and I think his bat would come around and the Giants still need some offense IMO
  21. QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Jan 28, 2010 -> 12:55 PM) Sadly, I know I'll look hard for a stream for the actual rumble match, I always got a kid-like enjoyment out of the rumble match. In my many years of watching wrestling, the best match I've ever seen was when Flair came in at either one or two and won it, it was tremendous and Bobby The Brain's commentary makes it epic
  22. I'm just shocked Bill Simmons wrote something that wasn't recycled from something he wrote the ten years ago.
  23. for Beckham to be considered an average 3b in '09 should be a good sign considering he played less than a year in the minors and was learning a new position.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 28, 2010 -> 02:37 PM) Pure genius. Now he can go somewhere else and have his numbers suffer. and not get paid as much IMO. at this point he might be better off waiting for ST to start and see if a contending team suffers a major injury.
