QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 06:19 PM) What the hell has Starlin Castro done to deserve how much love he has gotten this offseason? Yes, he's been young for his league, but his walk rate isn't fantastic, his strike out rate is good but it's not the best I've ever seen, he's only displayed doubles power and that was relatively weak. I've heard people mention how special his AFL was, but he didn't do anything that was really all that spectacular - yeah he hit for a really good average, in like 100 at bats, against pitchers working on certain pitches in the heat of Arizona. He still didn't walk, he still didn't hit for power, and his strikeout rate was, once again, good but not fantastic. If people begin comparing him to players like Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez, I think they're all full of s***. He had a better contact rate at that age, but didn't hit for the same amount of power, didn't walk as much, and wasn't stealing bases as proficiently either. I don't know how his defense is, but he better be like Omar Vizquel good in the field to be getting the love he's gotten. He looks like a good prospect, but not among the top. In fact, from what I've been reading on him, he sounds a lot like Alexei. He's a Cub, that's what he did. There's a chance he's a real quality prospect, but there's also a real chance that he's another overhyped Cubs prospect that they feed to the masses who have no clue so they can point to something for the future. Also, I always had the thought that the ratings services that follow minor leaguers and charge $$ tend to overhype the bigger market clubs prospects because some of the fringe fans will buy their services just to read how great the teams future is going to be. I noticed it a few years back when the Cubs had Juan Cruz, CP and a few other hyped players in the minors over a few year span, a few of my Cub friend fans who previously had zero interest in prospects bought various subscriptions.

Looks like Brock will be on ESPN tomorrow morning to address his future, I believe it's 9 a.m. central, but I could be wrong on that time. The UFC will also be doing a 3 part UFC Prime Time show (the 24/7 style show they did for GSP/Penn) to hype the GSP/Hardy match. A little surprised because I think Hardy is a good/exciting fighter, I think GSP is the clear favorite in this match, but I can see them selling him to the casual fan real well.

I agree that the announcers were favoring Detroit, especially on the goal calls

Josh Johnson re-ups with the fish for 4 years 39m... buys out his last two years of arb and secures him for his first two eligible years of FA
-
interesting, the first Vs. show has Bones Jones vs. Vera and Junior Dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga. Those are bigger fights than they put on Spike and with the Direct TV feud going on the ratings will most likely be lower.

Frankie Edgar getting the next shot at BJ, not Maynard, possibly at 112

Hopefully Conan brings Norm MacDonald on as a guest, those two during this would be hysterical.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 04:04 PM) Goran was pretty impressive, and I agree, lots of potential there. I believe he also saved someone from drowning while out with injuries. yes, if you google his name there's stories about it.

Great to hear Conan isn't rolling over for NBC and Leno. Leno is such a joke. If he didn't want to give up the Tonight Show he should have never agreed to the situation a few years ago and let Conan go to another network or stay where he was on NBC. Leno wants to pretend he's a good guy but he did zero to help Conan establish himself. I have watched Conan since the early days and he is very entertaining to me. Hopefully he's back on TV soon.

Maddux loves golf, he spent a ton of time playing even on his off days during the season. This has to be 99% PR move, because I don't see him putting the clubs away long enough to take this seriously.

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templa...8&zoneid=14 Hope this rumor is true (and mmaweekly.com is usually good about fight cards) because it has Goran Reljic coming back to fight. That guy has a ton of potential but had to take a long time off because of a serious injury, hopefully he comes back 100%. Not confirmed on ufc.com, but they don't finalize the undercards to real close to the actual card.

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jan 11, 2010 -> 10:38 PM) Neither are ever going to make a run at the top 10 rankings. They are perfect for UFN cards. LW probably is the deepest division in all of MMA, these are two quality fighters who put a good fight on a free card, I also thought the Esodero (sp?) and Dunham fight was entertaining as well.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jan 11, 2010 -> 10:27 PM) It was funny hearing Goldie say Maynard improved a lot on his boxing after getting tooled by a "pure boxer." Well, I guess he's still getting tooled then. Gray can be a human boring machine but whatever. I hope he gets the shot because if BJ vacates the LW belt after the fight it could mean a potential Frankie Edgar-Kenny Florian/Gomi fight for the vacant belt, which would be pretty damn interesting IMO. Sucky night of fights for the UFC tonight except for Escudero-Dunham, which was very entertaining. WEC > UFC at least as far as free events go. Also, neither Tom Lawlor nor Aaron Simpson are "beasts" despite what the broadcasters said. Really disagree with you there, those guys are to good up and coming fighters (although Simpson is in his mid 30's). That was a good fight.

BJ and the UFC are in a weird position because I don't think anybody in the world at 155 would be much of a matchup. I know people trumpet Aoki, and I think he is a very good fighter, IMO he is slightly overrated because he pulls off flashy subs, I just don't see how he would beat BJ. I think BJ has to jump to 170 soon or if he can cut 10 more pounds see if the UFC would bring up the winner of Aldo/Faber for a superfight.
-
boy that was a bad crowd tonight, how they weren't more into the Lawlor/Simpson fight is beyond me.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jan 11, 2010 -> 01:56 PM) Another fine night for the WEC. It's a lot easier for me to think of the bad or not-so-good fights than the good ones with the WEC since they deliver so often. Shalorus-Jansen was one of those not-so-good ones, but other than that, another very nice card. Can't wait for Aldo-Faber, but I'm not sure Faber has enough to beat Aldo. What mainly makes this fight interesting to me is that we should get to see quite a bit of Aldo's ground game. BTW you can watch Campuzano vs. Wheeler here: http://www.versus.com/wec cool, i heard that was a good fight, I will check it out. UFN tonight on Spike with Maynard vs. Diaz the ME and some other past TUF winners on

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templa...52&zoneid=2 Brock's trainer and Couture (who talked to Brock) say he will fight again. No timetable given, but doesn't sound like an extended stretch that was once feared.

watching Friday Night Fights on ESPN 2 last night they said that the Clottey/Pac-Man fight is all bet set for March 13th at Cowboys Stadium, basically Clottey has agreed to terms, nothing signed yet. I just have a gut feeling that they fight before the end of the year, I just can't see them walking away from about 30m each, too much money, especially since Mayweather has, according to reports, had money problems the last year or so. No word on who Mayweather may fight next, I've heard Malinagi or the winner of Berto/Mosley.

Nothing Much Going On So Here's A Thought...
SoxFan562004 replied to chetkincaid's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think even those who are highest on Chapman admit he is still very raw, even with, IMO, a shaky offense as it stands now, the top 4 in the rotation put the Sox in contention in the division, no need to break that up. -
QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 01:49 PM) I'd get excited for this news, but these events usually go 2 1/2 hours anyway. true, but maybe it will go 2:45 or 3 now and we get most of the card. Also, it's a good sign because Vs. feels they can sell that extra 1/2 hour of commercials, which is a good sign for MMA buisness. Also, 112 in Abu Dabi is shaping up to be a monster card at the top, rumors of Anderson/Belfort (both camps have contacted a gym there to train before the fight according to MMAweekly.com), Penn says he wants to fight on that card and looks like Hughes vs. Renzo is basically confirmed.
-
Today Arum is saying the fight is off. Call me shocked and very dissapointed if this is true. I thought all of this was just hype or at worst to buy time because March 13th was going to be too quick. I'm still holding out hope for this fight by the end of the year, it really needs to happen. Floyd was talking about Malinagi and I would have zero interest in that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 12:55 PM) If this move costs them Pujols, it's a terrible business decision. What do we think the salary difference between Holliday and Pujols will be over the span of this contract? Probably about $10 million a season, give or take. Now, really, in terms of marketing, merchandise, and the value of the franchise, do we think that Albert Pujols is worth an extra $10 million a year to the Cardinals? I'd say absolutely. If you had to pick between, simply as a business decision, offering Pujols $28 million a year and offering Holliday $17 million a year and losing Pujols, keeping the every-year-MVP is an easy, obvious decision. I look at it more of 7/120 over what's realistic for Albert if he hits the open market and the mega spenders are allowed to bid, 10/300, 7/210? I don't think 30m per season is out of the question, and you're in an era where it's a lot harder to get those contracts insured. Again, I really think it comes down to where if they don't resign Holliday or a comparable bat or a top flight pitcher Pujols will be a hell of a lot more reluctant to resign before he's a FA, and if he hits FA he's not resigning with the Cards IMO, if he's made the choice to go for top dollar, I don't see that being in St. Louis. There's many possibilities, it's possible Stl. has been holding a little payroll back knowing full well they're going to have to add a ton with Albert. From a business position, Stl. is one of the best baseball cities in America. Will it sting to trade or have Pujols walk in FA? Absolutely, but I do not see it shutting off the fan base to a point where it's a major hit when compared to potentially doubling the money they are guaranteeing to Holliday. Again, Stl. has to have a realistic plan B if Albert wants to leave for more money.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 10:37 PM) He was a prick, but he will and can prick his way into the hall of fame Ty Cobb style. Great career. maybe in general, but my experience with him was very good. He is a family friend of a friend and when he was with the D'Backs went to a game at Wrigley with tickets he left for us and watched him pitch. Met him after and he was extremely nice, one of the coolest live baseball experiences I've had. but yeah, his body of work with the media isn't exactly glowing! Boy, that small stretch he spent with the Astros was sick, completely dominating.
