Brandon McCarthy ML debut game thread vs Cubs
QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ May 22, 2005 -> 12:46 PM) Yeah, it's so sad...they celebrate after that? I dont see anything to celebrate, except moving a game up on Stl. Sox won the series, Prior went 130 pitches (Dusty is a pitcher killer), Cubs bullpen still sucks. The only reason I care about losing today is that we passed up an opurtunity to move another game up on the Twins. BUt it could be worse, the Twins could have won. BMac...Major props to you, go out and dominate Texas on Friday. I'm only bummed because Bmac pitched well enough and deserved his first ML win. But he'll get one soon enough...hopefully it will come against Texas later on this week

Brandon McCarthy To Make Major League Debut
QUOTE(qwerty @ May 22, 2005 -> 12:45 PM) How many times you think he threw his change up? Seemed like only a handful of times to me. Only one time stuck out in my head and it was a changeup he threw to Dlee. It was a good one too, but aside from that he didn't throw any others for strikes that I saw. The funny thing is he was throwing his changeup so much more than the curve down in Tuscon, but I think part of the reason for that is that the curve ball just doesn't break as well in Tuscon. Brandon does have a plus curve and he definately showed it. Hell, just watching him and Prior you can see some sort of semblance. I don't know if Bmac will be able to be as good as Prior, but I think he's got a shot to be close and he has the tools to succeed quickly in the majors (and not have a long adjustment period...ie good control, very sharp/mentally tough, repeats his delivery).

Guy in the booth?
QUOTE(Princess Dye @ May 22, 2005 -> 12:19 PM) aaah. i know it's not his regular gig, but several times Moose Skowron's quick reaction (yes!) has gotten my hopes up..... and each time it ends up in Sox disaster. i.e DuBois HR, Iguchi DP in the 8th Ya, he was busy saying pop out. The more I saw the replay the more I could see that being the case. As in major league...it looked like it was going to "too high". Moose seems like a nice guy and said a few funny things, but I prefer someone else as the guest 3rd man, although it is something I wouldn't mind seeing a little more often.

Brandon McCarthy To Make Major League Debut
Way to go Brandon Hell of an outing. Funny thing is it could of been even better, but he must not of had much of a feel for his changeup down in the pen before the start today. Still, fanfreakingtastic Brandon. May it be the 1st of many starts with the Sox

Brandon McCarthy ML debut game thread vs Cubs
What a game. I'll stick take two out of 3. Sox lost this one on Uribe's failure with the runner on 3rd and what I'll call a mistake in relieving Bmac too early, imo. I thought Brandon was rolling and there was no way I was going to take him out. Ramirez had hit him good, but it wasn't like Bmac was hanging pitches and well frankly I have zero confidence in Viz right now (he's just hanging everything or so it seems, but at least the velocity on his fastball was better this outing). Really though, can't complain, Sox were in this game and Bmac did a hell of a job. I was way more comfortable with him on the mound than Duque (remember I'm not much at all of a Duque fan so I'm bias and well frankly I think Bmac is a stud). I still don't know why Brandon wasn't throwing his changeup. I saw him throw one to Dlee who was just way out in front of it but that was it. His curve was looking really good though.

QUOTE(JimH @ May 22, 2005 -> 09:13 AM) They have their best defensive lineup out there, good idea with it being McCarthy's first start. I thought maybe Ozuna in for Uribe but Uribe's defense outweighs his hitting slump. Exactly...when I had saw all that stuff I was worried. I was wondering why Ozzie would put one of the worse defensive lineups the Sox could have out there for a rookie. I think you got to do your best to at least catch the ball and not create a need for Bmac to get extra outs. On a sidenote, I shudder at the thought of Pods playing anywhere in the outfield, let alone CF and when you mix it with Everett out there defensively as well....well thats just ugly.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 22, 2005 -> 09:14 AM) I'd like to see Jon and AJ signed long term before anything else. The idea with Dye at first is definitely an interesting one. Anderson is going to be starting next year, no doubt about it. Basically the one major place there is going to be an opening is first depending on what happens with Pauly. Anyways, there is going to be some serious range in the outfield next year. I'd like to see Pods move to the DH spot and if you have an OF have Dye, Rowand, Anderson next year (If Thomas is gone). Pods is an AWFUL defensive left fielder.

Trade Frank Thomas?
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ May 22, 2005 -> 09:13 AM) I strongly disagree with this. Regardless of the numbers he puts up in the 2nd half he's a much greater injury risk going for. That's going to drive down his price considerably. If he helps the White Sox win in the post season is that not worth $10M in 2006? What's likely to happen is that the WSox will work out a contract extension that he's heavy on performance & health incentives. Of all the players on the WSox right now Thomas is the most likely to accept less $'s, & less years for a shot at the WS. Is there any reason to think the WSox are not WS contenders now? No getting Garland reupped and keeping the rotation/pen intact is much more important, imo. I would not pay Frank Thomas 10 mill next year. Unless he comes in and plays like he did back in his prime.

QUOTE(JimH @ May 22, 2005 -> 09:10 AM) Interesting. I really haven't given it too much thought as my focus is totally on 2005, this team has a chance to win. But, to play along, I think if the Sox go deep into October you'll see Konerko re-signed. If not, my guess is they'll plug a lefthanded bat in over there via trade. I do not see Carl coming back at this point, they want to make room for Anderson and who knows, Sweeney may be knocking at the door too. Going with my assumption for a second, that means Carl's LH bat is gone and the logical place for a LH bat is 1B. I do not think that LH bat will be Gload. Thomas IMO will be re-signed and he may play occasionally at 1B but there will be one additional guy brought in. I see it as someone from the outside, not Gload or Rogowski. They will keep the pitching staff together with a few minor tweaks like Shingo being gone, maybe change the bullpen a bit. Friend of SoxTalk Timo Perez will not be here next year and could be gone a lot sooner. A big wild card is Sweeney, not to harp on him, but he is coming fast. Erubiel Durazo is an option.

Trade Frank Thomas?
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ May 22, 2005 -> 08:49 AM) It depends on a team's depth. If a team has strong relief depth (incl their ml's) they will look to shore up their greatest weakness relying on that depth. LAA might fit that mold. Consider the WSox has an example. We would only trade Frank because with Everett our depth at DH is strong. Our greatest weakness is the lack of a dominating relief pitcher. Unless we cah shore that up it makes no sense in trading Frank. You don't trade your depth for the future in a year you could go to the WS. Koney is unsigned & not likely to return. There is no one on the team now or in the minors that has Frank's HR potential going forward. He has not been healthy over the last contract so this greatly favors the WSox in a contract extension for Frank. Nomar went from a guaranteed 60M/5 to an 8M/1 not because of his play but because of his health. I see Frank in a similar boat. Since F-ROD was mentioned let's be realistic. If LAA were to trade him for Frank they are essentially trading away a part of their future for a trip to the post season this year. Without F-ROD they are not likely to advance in the post season. But w/out Thomas they are not likely to get there. Umm...they aren't trading Krod. For cripes sakes they wouldn't give up McPherson (even though I mentioned his name) to get RJ so I highly doubt they'd give up Krod for Frank (a guy that hasn't played in almost a year at the major league level). Wouldn't you think they would be just as well off getting Aubrey Huff (and then they could give up prospects only???). Sox won't be able to get value for Frank unless he's at the major league level raking, imo.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ May 22, 2005 -> 08:46 AM) I wish Rowand had gone after fat boy yesterday when he plunked him and really, really thought AJ was going to. Maybe we should put Timo in to rush Prior and get them both otta the game.[/color=green] ROFL....Timo is worthless. I hope when Gload/Thomas come back its Timo/Walker that are on the way out.

This is ridiculously premature...
QUOTE(rangercal @ May 22, 2005 -> 08:36 AM) The only pitcher in all of baseball (50 wins or more) projected for more wins by 40 is Pedro Martinez. Sabathia was projected for 298.

Damn, thats going to be one heck of a task. I will say this if anyone could do it, I'd probably go with Buehrle/Dontrell of the younger group of pitchers. I'd of said Prior or Zambrano and included them but they suffer from the Dusty Baker factor.

Trade Frank Thomas?
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ May 22, 2005 -> 06:30 AM) I'm one of the biggest Thomas fans in the world but I can't argue with his general premise. The LAA are leading their division & have spent a fortune to do so. Vladdy just got hurt. It's a team who is desperate for a hitter like Thomas with good talent to trade. I'm not saying do it, but you would be a fool not to see what they are offering. I'd trade for Dallas McPherson.

ATO: Honel Back, News on The Big Hurt, Gload, And More By Jason Gage May 22, 2005 FutureSox.com RHP Kris Honel was activated from the disabled list on Saturday and made his return with the Barons in the top of the 14th. The former 1st round draft pick pitched a scoreless 14th but would get tattooed in the 15th inning giving up 3 runs on 4 hits while walking one. Honel picked up the loss...MORE

Chris Amador???
Now it seems like AA is the place to get promoted from in most instances. Realistically AAA is only for those talented prospects that are being blocked by a quality major leaguer who plays the same position. And for mid-level prospects to show enough to get promoted or gain additional seasoning because while they have the talent they lack some of the necessary skills to have success at the major league level (strike zone judgement, a shorter swing, etc). Its also a way for to ease the transition.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 21, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) Yep. Almost captures what I was feeling when I saw that ball pop off of Patterson's mit... I had my sister starring and laughing at me. I was swearing f***ity f*** f*** cause I thought Patterson had it and than when the ball fell out of the mitt I started screaming and going nuts. She gets more laughs from me during the baseball season than any other time of the year That and I tend to talk to myself during a Sox game

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ May 21, 2005 -> 01:46 PM) Who's seen him twice already, and hit him hard the second time. He wasn't 100% in that start though (if its any consolation, LOL). But I'm not too concerned. If Brandon has command of his stuff, he'll be successful.
