Yep that .635 OPS is a great fit with Leury and Harrison. Sox definitely need more utility players.

Even if the Nats would accept the Sox prospects, the cost for the Sox doing that is immense, because that would take every quality young player we have. Huge loss in marginal utility. Of course I don't buy this "Window" nonsense either.

Soto doesn't guarantee squat or come close to it. Can't we be a normal team and develop players and use them. Sox are so fearful of that (unless they have outside branding as a top prospect) that they sign old utility infielders so as not to "risk" playing them. The Indians dumped their 2B and his career 1/2 year on us last year, and the replacement (who was never a ranked prospect and was hitting modestly at the time in spot duty) made the All Star game this year. They trade Kluber before he completely sours and, what do you know, all start game closer! I think the farm is in better shape than it has been in years (still bottom quartile, but what we have was earned by drafting, international signings and development, not by tanking). I just hope we know what we have.

I think they thought KImbrel would have a vigorous trade market (they announced the plan to trade him right after picking up his contract; probably not the best way to play your cards). FO out to lunch on the entire market last offseason. Anyway, Pollock is getting Rodon's money.

The last 2 are pretty good picks for punts.

Yea small market Cardinals and Padres each have multiple players under 9 figure contracts. The system is grand.

Pallette is a 4 year college player; should be underslot, if anything. Schultz could be overslot; but reaching for an overslot player doesn't seem like the best approach. So, I'm thinking (hoping?) that he's slot. Oh, they'll punt. I just hope they don't do so as obnoxiously (5 rounds of 10K players) as they have recently.

They'll probably make a silly trade with the Cubs; young for old and average. Something like the KImbrel trade: Crochet and an interesting prospect for Happ. Hahn might throw in Burger, too. Doesn't require much energy and ya gotta pay for Happ's career year.

I can think of 4 starters this century that the Sox have developed pillar to post. There have been a handful of temporary 5th-starter types (one of whom is starting for the Pirates) but not many legitimate starters. On the other hand, there have been many that they grabbed from other teams while still in the minors who have turned out well (I can think of 5 currently in the majors and then several prior). Anyway, I hope the development program is up to the challenge. On edit, my count is up to 6 starters developed pillar to post this century, 4 of whom are still in the majors. One was a high-school draftee.

The Nats won't get near what the writers suggest, unless a team has agreed to an extension with him. Without that, he's still a 2-playoff season rent. Sensible teams just don't push all their chips in for 2 seasons (or even more) of hope. And even with an extension, I think the packages will turn out a big lighter; yea the Nats can hold him until December, but the return will be adjusted considerably, so they don't have that much leverage.

Reached for a player who's going to be hard to sign. Maybe they just didn't like this class and are going to punt the pick to next year. Everyone seems to like the pick though; I guess high risk/high reward.

Only if a rental and cheap. Long term planning when buying at the deadline is counterproductive. Buying now usually means paying a premium for career years, trading young for old, instead of retooling.
