The rebuild peaked in 2020. They could have beaten Oakland (in contrast Houston in 2021), and got Rickyed to some extent. Could have beaten anyone in the league. Since then, some downturn in performances and some atrocious Hahn moves (young for old is just a losing situation) and here we are. It looks like an old, tired team.

I wouldn't. Takes away flexibility. Out with the old, in with the new.

Braves are quite the opportunists. They get a solid starter from the Astros for a struggling reliever. And they get Iglesias from the Angels for basically nothing in terms of players but they do have a significant contractual obligation; but not terribly risky, as Iglesias has never had a bad season.

They could put Engel in RF every day. They certainly wouldn't sit Eloy or Robert (when he gets well) for Bradley.

Sox have outfield defense. What they don’t have is outfield Defense they can hit outside of Robert. Bradley just adds to the weakness.

Sox #7 in payroll - damn inefficient. would be closer to the Cardinals but for c. $29 mill on Pollock, Leury, VV and Joe Kelly. Unfortunately, c. $21 mill is guaranteed next season to those guys.

Plenty of 22-24 year olds went in these deadline trades; Sox had prospects to trade outside of their top 6 or so,. That said, I'm glad they didn't.

Just using the fangraphs ratings, the Sox equivalent would have been giving up someone like Yolbert for him. Hahn could have snagged one of these platoon lefty hitters, but I'm not sure he was looking for that. But I can't blame him for being measured for this .500 team. The debacle over the winter is another story (as are his many other debacles). A mediocre front office to begin with, and then LaRussa in the mix, ....we could have a real mess, that replacing only Hahn won't fix.

it's not the best sign when someone who got nothing done starts the press conference by expressing how "Sleep deprived" he is, looking for "I tried" points. just weak in a number of ways. Hahn could certainly use a stronger staff, especially in analytics and pro-scouting. But that's on him. And what's with the affectation with these veteran relievers. Does he have a Rasputin whispering to him? Or maybe it's LaRussa.

Well I misread the title of this thread. Anyway, Ed Short was really bad his last 3 seasons. And the farm was bad. Sub-Hahn at least at the end. Hawk wasn't as bad as his rep. While he traded Bonilla for fiddlesticks, he also picked him up in Rule 5. Himes was probably the best GM the Sox have had in the last 50 years. Schueler inherited well from him - should have done better.

Just off the top of my head, Avilla's worse. Maybe Jon Daniels these days too and whoever's running the Angels, Rockies and Diamondbacks (no idea why the D Backs are so bad). That's about the best I can say.

Balta lays out the problems. Extending so many promising young major-leaguers really takes away a lot of flexibility. Sign Moncada long-term, but what if you have a couple of good 3B prospects coming up? You'd like the flexibility to move him or let him go. So many things led us to this, including just poor work on the farm during the rebuild (including selling international money for AAAA players). And then you have this offseason with a bloated contract for L Garcia, and this Joe Kelly signing at what was probably 2x market. Still, some savvy GM work could rehab this. Astros had a core of 4: Bregman, Altuve, Correa and Springer. 2 have left the nest, and the Astros haven't missed a beat. At this point, try to win the division and hope to hell that Sheets and Eloy and Giolito and Lynn have a great last 2 months.

And the trades that were rumored and that the fans wanted were insane, such as anything and everything for Joe Randa, and Contreras et al for headcase Sonny Burnett. The problem here was Hahn’s massive eff-up in the free agent market in December 2021.

I'm sure it's minimal, but can't Hahn just cut a deal 1 for 1, especially when the Sox are getting the worst of it (stuck for 2 seasons) with our 1? Always lagniappe.

The only trouble with this move is that the Sox are stuck with this guy for next year. Hahn just loves his aging relievers. Pen is where you can save some budget and turn failed starter prospects into relievers at minimum salary. Is the title correct that the CHW are throwing in extra $ for this?

Using fangraphs' ratings, and aside from the reliever side of this deal, it would be like trading Sosa for Quintana. The Cards farm was evaluated in July and the Sox in April.
