If not MacDougal, then Schweitzer and Sandlin ( It's stunning to see Sandlin throwing darts in Charlotte instead of Chicago). That would be an upgrade. Working young pitchers in the major league bullpen before putting them in the rotation is a pretty standard method of pitching development, so I hope they just bring up MacDougal when ready. It's hard to develop a deep staff and bullpen. Actually did a pretty good job this year.

The reason I assume is because if they have the same upside, then they wouldn't be "neck and neck" as to who should go #1: Roch would be far ahead. No way could you justify significantly higher risk for the same reward. And you mentioned in one of your posts that Emerson is not much on defense. So that would mean he has to have even more potential with the bat to compensate for his given deficits on D.

We lost an entire series to Detroit like this. Now we're well on our way to losing this one. Unless we're clearly superior, these teams have owned us the last decade. Too many Ks at the wrong time. Venable over-managing. Among other issues.

Why are we wasting him in Charlotte? Not good nights for 2 putative members of the sox pen in Gonzalez and Palette.....although I suspect it's Mr. Sandlin who will assume those duties (or Fedde/Kay with Sandlin in the rotation).

Taylor is usually great; but he's also had about the same number of outings where he's given up runs as Dominguez has. (he got hit in several June outings). Tonight our major division rival beat beat our pitching. They beat our best starter, and, 2 of our best relievers. Thus, not a finished product.

Man, I hope they don't act like they're the smartest guy in the room and do something like that. Because they will just outsmart themselves.

Doesn't see that easy to me. Still have series with Yankees and Tampa. Still have to play the entire NL Central except Brewers). Don't have to play Dodgers, Phillies or Braves, but neither do Guardians (who also finished with NY and Brewers).

Taylor has got to do better than this. These implosions happen way too often. Eisert has no business pitching in the late innings. Newcomb was terrible too, but he's usually good. Anyway, team's not a finished product - no surprise.

Getting back the Saint plus McDougal would add a lot of energy to the staff and would make for quite the July.

I'm not sure of the plans for Schweitzer (still starter possibilities?), but he can throw mid-90s; that's one reason that I like Murphy as he's a 95/96 40-seam guy too. Hudson's had a good year, but he's a real soft tosser. Within the next month I would think that Schweitzer and Sandlin are on this 26-man for the duration.

Adding a "fast moving player" makes no sense, unless they think he's the best player. Sox are finally in a good position: Good team and #1 pick. Just be normal. Draft the player that they think is best.

At the start of the year, I thought the Tigers would win this division by 10 games. At this point, I want them to be just good enough so as not to trade Skubal, and then collapse.

The Padres will be rebuilding in 2027. Yea, let's do what they did. Or we could be like the Brewers.

I think the drafting/evaluation of amateur pitching has been less than exemplary overall. I also wonder if we just don't draft enough pitchers. The success rate is really low, so you need a lot more prospects.

In a similar vein, the Sox have 5 lefty relievers on the 26 man: Shweitzer, Eisert, Hudson, Newcomb, Murphy. I presume that that number will have to be winnowed down; and some can’t just be optioned back; and none are really bad enough to just DFA of the 40-man. (except maybe Eisert who has such little velocity), so dealing with this situation might create 40-man room.

Where would we be without Gonzalez? Vargas at 1b, CM at 3rd, Meidroth at SS and I guess Antonacci at 2b. Whoever in LF? No thank you. Thank goodness for the depth. And we may need it tomorrow. As it is, Gonzalez is a better defender at first than Mune. 1B/DH should be Gonzalez/Mune or vice-versa going forward. Gonzalez could spell some other IFs once a week too. It's Benintendi who is really the odd man out (but he's been doing well, so I have no impending desire to move him). Detmers has been one of those underachieving types, who's having a great year. Is it a one-off career year, or has he figured things out? I'd rather the sox go after Urena, but either one would cost something that would hurt. And really, the really don't need any hole-pluggers (such as an innings-eater starter) that can be had for a low-ceiling prospect. Overall, Sox have some depth. But I don't see an abundance (other than perhaps lefty middle relief) or anyone really blocked.

Now that you mention it... No, the point was that you need several pitches in order to start, so a GM that at least I respect thought he had that in him. So perhaps he does have secondaries so that he can be an effective reliever.

I guess the thread that I'm hanging on, thin as it may be, is that the Giants signed him expressly to start. And that was when the Giants were run by Zaidi, who was pretty seasoned FO guy. So maybe there's something there.

Decent chance that situation improves over the next month. Hicks hit 100 several times on Sunday. If he could keep it together (which I realize he hasn’t in ages), he’d be a huge boost. Murphy has some stuff and is effective when he doesn’t walk the world. Lately the BBs have been in check. Overall, the Sox have done a good job with depth…both in assembling it and using it. Still a couple of putative major league relievers in Charlotte (Palette, e.g.)

Take Emerson. When Mune leaves, we’ll have the same infield configuration we have now plus a budding Bryce Harper waiting in the wings.

Ideally, that’s what they say. But the Sox haven’t shown the ability to consistently draft and develop in the upper quartile: and consistently behind the Twins, Tigers and Guardians. And is it really true anyway? Everyone was beating on the Orioles for not cashing in some prospects for veteran pitching. Well they finally did (Rogers, Baz, Burnes) – and they got decidedly worse. There are other things you can do with “excess” prospects: like trade for someone else’s excess in pitching prospects. And for the Sox, young-for-old trades have been singularly non-productive. I think pretty much 100% of June/July trades have been, at best, non-productive with several absolute disasters. The only exceptions are the Blum in 2005 (a minor trade for a utility IF) and the Contreras/Loiza flip in 2004 (not a young-for-old trade).

I surmise from all of this that Emerson has a much higher hit potential than Roch; otherwise Roch would be well ahead for #1. What’s Roch’s likely outcome if things go well? Dansby? I’ll go with riskier upside bat. That said, I’d be surprised if Roch isn’t the pick.
