QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 12, 2010 -> 03:15 PM) If bandwidth will be an issue then I don't think you'll find an alternative solution that will work. That's my assumption at this point. I didnt know if there was something out there that has some sort of adaptive video quality as bandwidth shrinks.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 12, 2010 -> 03:18 PM) Honestly, do they have Macs or PC's? Because ichat works pretty good over long distances. naaa. they will all be PCs. we are loaning them two of the schools laptops.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 12, 2010 -> 02:43 PM) Our company has used Skype to communicate with people on other continents, seems reliable. They're only using voice, though. The video part scares me. My worry is that they will have limited bandwidth in the hotel and video will constantly dropout or get laggy.

Ok, so I need some quick IT advice (within the next 24 hours would be great). As many of you know I work for a church/school. One of our pastors has a serious form of cancer and is going to Arkansas for treatment. He's going to be there for 3-4 months and his family (wife and two daughters) have made the choice to go with him. They dont want to up root their two daughters from school, but dont have much of a choice. So, we're looking at doing a teleconference where each of the kids will have a laptop with them in Arkansas and "teleconference" into their classrooms so they still have some interaction with their classes (they will be partially home schooled in Arkansas) Which free "video chat" software do you think would work best? My first thought is Skype. We also have access to Google Chat (via our Google Apps account). Any other solid, easy to roll out options? They are going to be in a hotel, so bandwidth might be an issue. but if we can at least get audio through, or one way video) that would be great. On our end, I have a T1 line I can dedicate to the teleconference. This is a major time crunch issue, as they told me today they leave Saturday morning and I'd like to have their laptops configured before Friday.

@FakeAPStylebook - Articles on autism should emphasize that while the causes are unclear they're probably whatever a celebrity mom claims them to be.

QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Oct 10, 2010 -> 05:59 PM) LOL Bears with sole possession of first place after the Packers lose in OT. Todd Collins with an epic QB rating of 6. All 4 QBs combined for a passer rating of 10.9477. That HAS to be the worst QBed game in NFL history. -
My deepest condolences.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 11:34 AM) What if you were a technical resource for a sales team that worked with customers to do installs or configuration? Meaning you were only brought in to work with a customer to either prove something works the way it should or to actually implement something they purchased? The reason I ask is because alot of my technical folks in that role work the job for a few years to gain experience while getting free certs and then take that experience and go and run IT depts or a director role. That's absolutely something I would do.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 11:20 AM) Would you consider a sales-type role in the field? Sometimes people get their start there and then the company pays for you to get certs. You also get nice comp while doing it. I could never be a sales person. It's just not in my personality.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 11:21 AM) Cant reveal that on a public forum quite yet since I dont have my space leased yet and its in the beginning stages. But I will say I am only looking to open this business because I think it benefits the residents of my neighborhood and I want to continue to be a part of the development of the west side. That's really awesome of you. Big thumbs up to you!

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 10:17 AM) I know it's ridiculous, but I've had this feeling that there will be actual contact with an alien world some time soon. My sisters bf and his sister swore they saw a UFO in early September when picking up a pizza. It was this large bright light that just vanished in a second.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 10:08 AM) IMO, A+ isn't really a respected cert. Its good if you want to get into basic helpdesk or fix PCs but no networking group worth their salt with vet any of the + certs. You would be better off getting a Cisco/Microsoft cert than the A+. you'd be surprised how many jobs i"ve seen were A+ is a required cert. With that being said, I'm planning on doing a series of certs. Any advice as to a course of action would be appreciated. I am pretty much "self taught" when it comes to computers. So, I dont have any real degree or certs to prove to a company what I know. I'm above average in my general computing and networking knowledge and I have very rudimentary experience in Windows Server. After years of debating what career path I want to take (I majored in radio broadcasting, and currently work as a technology coordinator at a church), i think I'm going to go the IT route. I just enjoy it more.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 10:04 AM) Actually looking to open my own small business in Chicago on the side in the next few months. oh cool. what are you looking at doing?

I've officially decided to start looking for a new job early next year. I am going to get my A+ certification in late winter/early spring and then start looking for an IT job. I need to find a same or higher paying job, or else I'm not leaving my current one.

Apparently the feeling is now that Cutlers concussion came after the "Olsen falls over" block.
