  1. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 17, 2011 -> 04:21 PM) Agreed. That being said, Beckham did this same crap last year(as you've pointed out before), it's certainly encouraging to watch Brent the last few months but I'm still not sold on him being the answer going forward though he's certainly going to be our starting 3b going into next season. Well Beck's wasn't a rookie. And the recurring theme around these parts regarding Morel is that he's slow to adapt at just about every level before settling in. I'm certainly not saying Morel has 'arrived' or anything like that. But the BB/power binge the last few weeks is very encouraging.
  2. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 17, 2011 -> 03:29 PM) I'd like to see something like this in 2012 C AJ 6m Flowers .4m 1B Konerko 12m 2B Beckham .6m* SS 3B Morel .5m* LF De Aza .5m* Lillibridge .6m* CF Rios 12m RF Viciedo 3.25m DH Dunn 14M UT Escobar .4m SP Buehrle 10m* SP Peavy 17m SP Sale 1m* SP Humber 1m* SP Stewart .5M* RP Crain 4.5M RP Ohman 2.5M RP Reed .5m Assuming a payroll of around $105m with additions at short and the pen needed. I might sign someone like Ramon Santiago for 2y/5m. That would be 20 players at about $85m. As I've said before, I'd stock up on pitching for Danks, Floyd, Thornton, Santos, Quentin, and Ramirez. With the economy the way it is, I wouldn't expect more than 75% value in return for that group, however. I seriously doubt you'd see that much roster turnover in one off-season.
  3. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Sep 17, 2011 -> 12:13 PM) Nice to see Morel find power, but I've got to believe that if there was any semblance of meaning left in the games the Sox play (there hasn't been for quite some time now) his power would still be a myth. That first Detroit sweep took a lot of pressure off this team. Morel's not the first rookie to start slow and finish strong. Don't think it has anything to do with the games being meaningless. As if the pitchers are saying, "Hey, since your team is out of it, will take it easy on you from here on out."
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 16, 2011 -> 10:59 AM) I don't know what you're talking about. I saw him at Gibson's last night. Everyone in the room smiled when they saw him. You are so right. I forgot about that. That is key. When you see Ozzie and smile, that definitely means you have supporters and you should keep your job.
  5. Damn, I'm startin' to feel bad for Ozzie. I liked it better when it was just Sox fans that lambasted him. Now it's a world-wide epidemic. People in third-world countries are hating on Ozzie now. Yes, I used hyperbole. But you get the point.
  6. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 16, 2011 -> 10:29 AM) He supports Ozzie for another year, ignore it. No, I get that. But even with greg, I can wrap my head around most, if not all, of the stuff he says. I have no rebuttal for what elrockin' just said. I can't come up with anything. He just bamboozled me. I feel violated.
  7. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 16, 2011 -> 09:58 AM) The regular players are paid to play. Make them earn it. I don't really think playing rookies for the last 13 days is going to make a difference for 2012. Hopefully Spring Training is where they show up. Using the logic of playing rookies to see their contributions for the remainder of the season is like thinking Dunn or Rios will magically appear also. So it's six of one and seven of the other W.H.A.T.?!!!!!!
  8. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 16, 2011 -> 09:59 AM) Might as well add his brother and Carl Everett to that list then.. Hell, Jim Thome had a couple years here. He had his best years in Cleveland and will retire in Cleveland, with a call to the hall with an Indian cap on, but dammit he's in-house with us! Just seems like you have to have spent a considerable amount of time with the organization to be worthy of a hire here. We need to get away from that crap.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 16, 2011 -> 09:37 AM) Sandy Alomar Jr. is, IMO, very much an in house hire, regardless of the fact that he spent his best years in Cleveland. Tim Raines spent a ton of time in Montreal and NY but he's on your list of in-house hires. 70 games in 2001. Another 50 or so the next year. 20 in 2006? That doesn't even come out to a full season's worth of games. Raines was our everyday LF for five consecutive seasons.
  10. Not surprising. If Ozzie's going down, he's going down his way. He's not gonna change now with just a couple weeks to go. We're going to get a heavy dose of JP, Rios and AJ. Doesn't really matter to me as long as he's fired/traded after the season.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 16, 2011 -> 08:30 AM) Sandy Alomar Jr. is connected to this franchise, played here a couple times, even was traded for as a stopgap and was buehrle's private catcher for half a year after the Widge was let go When I think Sandy Alomar Jr., I think Cleveland Indians. The poster I was responding to implied he wanted to get away from the in-house method of hiring this franchise has adopted over the last decade or so (KW, Ozzie, Baines, Raines, Walker, Cora, etc).
  12. When do the championship hats/shirts come out? I want one of each. Money is of no consequence.
  13. Just learned that the Royals are the first team in league history to have 3 OFs with 40 or more doubles in the same season.
  14. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 16, 2011 -> 07:32 AM) What was that line? "If you have ever been graced with the opportunity to just be in the presence of Tim Tebow, you are already a better person." Ugh. Stop it. Please god stop it. Where's my rifle?
  15. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Sep 15, 2011 -> 10:51 PM) I just want somebody who's never been a associated with the organization in any way. A new perspective is much needed. Never been associated? I'd definitely be down with Martinez or Alomar Jr. But they're not 'connected' to the franchise. So I know what you mean.
  16. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 16, 2011 -> 02:38 AM) Most Tebow hate is media driven, no doubt about it. People just get tired of hearing about the guy. Obviously that's not his fault but he's not the only athlete it has happened to. Thom Brennaman during the '09 BCS title game sealed it for me. That's the first time I seriously wanted to murder somebody on television.
  17. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 16, 2011 -> 07:13 AM) All part of the plan to resign him with that hometown discount! I actually expected this earlier in the year. Not for him to be this bad. But I was expecting a high 4-ish type era. That he had been so consistent coming into this month was pretty astounding considering his peripherals, which were never impressive in the first place, had declined over the last few years.
  18. I will support absolutely none of this darkness and negativity. If Boston loses out and we win out, that's a WC tie, baby! Just win, baby! All you gotta do is believe.
  19. Mark with a cool 11.74 ERA and 2.54 WHIP this month. 33 hits in 15.1 IP. Ouch. That's second half 2006 bad.
  20. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 16, 2011 -> 12:16 AM) Is Hosmer the best player in our division right now? In terms of youth and potential? Would you give up Danks and Floyd and Sergio for Hosmer right now? Straight up three for one?? Yes and yes.
  21. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 15, 2011 -> 06:47 PM) What would we be advocating then as far as an OF next year? Albatross contracts are weighing us down apparently and some folks don't think we can unload them. Pierre most likely is gone so maybe Rios stays? Even though I think he should be gone. Viciedo-Rios-Quentin with De Aza the sub? This season is toast. Give De Aza as many PAs as possible and then you re-evaluate in the offseason. I know you don't want to face this reality. But there's a good chance CQ is traded before opening day next year.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 15, 2011 -> 06:57 PM) When they had a healthy Thomas (briefly) and Pods/Iguchi running on all cylinders. a very good offense. With Everett as DH for most of that season, Rowand and Crede struggling and inconsistent at best....so-so, but still tons better than our 2010-11 offenses. Healthy Frank and there's no near September collapse and we go 11-0 in the PS while winning most of those 11 by 3+ runs.
  23. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Sep 15, 2011 -> 06:10 PM) Damaso Marte. I'm sure you're being sarcastic. But I'll always have a soft spot for Marte. His last year with the Sox was pretty unforgettable. But in '02 and '03, you have to really struggle to come up with a list of 5 non-closer RPs who were better. Octavio Dotel and Scott Shields come to mind. Slim pickings after that.
  24. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 15, 2011 -> 06:10 PM) I think he has shown his stuff don't you really? Vicideo-De Aza and Quentin No. The sample size is still rather miniscule.
  25. He's not a HOF. But Maggs has been pretty damn consistent (some years spectacular) for over a decade. Yeah, he blows this year. He's 37 now. But a .314/.376/.519/.895 slashline and 130 OPS+ from '99 through '10 is nothing to sneeze at.
