QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 01:34 PM) I'll ask you this since Balta can't... Name me another manager who makes this team a playoff team. What's the point? It can't be proven. It'd be your opinion vs whoever.

Congratulations on #2000, Pierre

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 01:32 PM) Point is they were never going to win with the production they got from the albatross contracts regardless of what they did to work around it. That's purely assumption. You, I, or anybody has no idea what would've occurred had they acted sooner. -

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 01:25 PM) Dunn, Rios, and Pierre benched. That leaves one spot open with De Aza and Viciedo playing regularly. By the way, the team has lost ground in the standings since De Aza and Viciedo have been playing regularly. There's a spot open because CQ is hurt. All things being equal, when it actually mattered, Dayan should've been up in June. -

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 12:57 PM) You'd bench your 2nd highest obp guy? Again, tallest midget syndrome. He should've been benched for Dayan months ago. Or at least seen a reduction in playing time. But there were no circumstances aside from injury that would've seen that come to fruition. -
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 12:58 PM) When you look at some of the albatross contracts we have 3.5M isn't all that bad And once again, you just seem to not understand or blatantly ignore the economic side of the game. You don't give away money simply because it's nowhere near as bad as a Peavy contract. Frasor has had a solid career. But he's 34 and has been very, very bad for us. As disgusting (in a bad way) as our system is, there are some intriguing relief prospects. We're not a Jason Frasor away from contending.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 12:46 PM) He's not effective enough on defense to be a 4th OF. A 4th OF better be able to cover CF non-terribly, at least in the AL where you only have 4 bench roster spots. And he's no longer a stolen base threat if you use him as a pinch runner. But that's what he is, or should be, on this particular team. The best-case scenario, obviously, is that he wouldn't be on the roster at all. -
QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 12:50 PM) So he decided to have a crappy Pen? No, he decided that there was no room for a HOF slugger but managed to find well over 300 at bats for Mark Kotsay.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 12:43 PM) Define "use him correctly"? People here have Dunn and Rios on the bench. There are only 25 roster spots. He's a #9 hitter/4th OF. A player of his caliber shouldn't be in the top 10 in PAs. -

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 12:33 PM) SABRmetrics has jumped the shark. If you watch and understand the game you know Pierre did his job. You also know that the Tigers are simply better than the Sox. You don't need Sabermetrics to know that JP has a limited skill-set and shouldn't be accumulating anywhere near 700 PAs a season. That's the thing. If used correctly, he could be an asset. But not with Ozzie. Jerry Owens would've gotten 600+ PAs in '08 had he not gotten hurt. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 12:21 PM) The 2007 pitching triple crown is nothing to scoff at, no matter what ballpark. ERA ok...but Wins and Strikeouts too. Dude was a legit great pitcher, but he got there with a max effort delivery. Everyone knew it. Meh. When I see Aaron Harang, a guy who was a walking pile of possum s*** for three years straight, go to the Padres and 'rediscover' himself, I'd say the Petco effect cannot be underestimated. I think Peavy was very good at one point. But that park certainly contributed to his dominance.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 12:14 PM) If you look at the history of those guys, yes, expecting them to continue to perform was a poor gamble. Dunn may have been likely to continue performing and thus the best gamble of the group, but Rios had trended downward for years and was having a bad 2009 when the Sox risked picking him up. Peavy had had elbow problems before, a broken rib before, and then the ankle thing before the Sox traded for him, in addition to a long list of people saying that his mechanics were risky before the Sox ever picked him up. Not to mention the Petco effect. I'm starting to think Fausto Carmona could produce a 3.50 ERA in that park.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 11:46 AM) It doesn't help that Hudson is looking more and more like a young Halladay everyday. I wouldn't go that far. But the guy is obviously legit. It really is amazing how stunningly fast that organization has turned around. Call it skill or luck or a combination of both. But in that time frame, they've added their #1 and #2 starters for this year's playoffs, fixed a bullpen that was record-breaking bad in '10 overnight, while at the same time restocking a farm system (Tyler Skaggs, Patrick Corbin, David Holmberg) that now features arguably the deepest collection of legitimate pitching prospects in baseball. Take some f***ing notes, Kenny.

QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 12:00 PM) So projecting three players in their prime to continue to perform (Peavy, Rios, Dunn) was poor evaluation? We aren't talking about three guys that are 35 years old or three guys without proven track records (Rios is debatable), we're talking about three solid players. With Peavy, specifically, you're implying that Kenny should have known that Peavy would have a freaking muscle detach in his back (first time in MLB history)? If we pull up threads from before Spring Training, there was far and away a sense that the offseason was the most successful the Sox have had in years. There was a sense that this team would run away with the division. There was a sense amongst baseball analysts in the media that the Sox would dominate the Central. To now say that KW didn't field a solid roster, in hindsight after abysmal performances by 4 key players, is completely unfair. As Tex mentioned, I, too, find it rather easy to excuse KW of any fault for this debacle. Five missed postseasons in the last six years. This isn't just about this year. This organization has been in a slow decline ever since the '05 World Series. s***, if Jerry Owens doesn't get hurt in spring training, we probably don't win the division in '08. Everybody knows Owens was Ozzie's boy toy and only injury forced him to go with CQ.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 10:59 AM) I hope Frasor doesn't want to return so the Sox have little risk in offering him arbitration. Lord knows the Sox need draft picks. At his age, I'd imagine he'd be looking for some security. There will probably be some dumb team out there that offers him a multi-year deal. At least I hope so.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 10:43 AM) Frasor might be back but I think we can go younger and cheaper as we have some decent in-house folks to pick from in 2012. Frasor should be trade bait, but if we don't pick him up KW is just making the original bad deal (Hudson) look even worse, I am still inclined to keep Sale in the pen, but a lot depends on who stays and who leaves pitchingwise That's ridiculous. Not picking up the option on a 34-year old serviceable reliever will not make the Hudson deal look worse. Let him walk, collect the draft pick, and move on.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 09:08 AM) What is it that you think I don't understand? I simply stated a fact. Your comment on Quentin, on the other hand, is complete conjecture as you have no way of knowing how he would have performed if he had not been injured. Oh GMAB. CQ >>> Pierre. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 09:11 AM) Isn't Zach Stewart now the prize for Hudson? He looked good his last outing. We'll need about two dozen more of those before the immovable stench of the Hudson/Jackson trade is disposed of.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 01:21 AM) Pierre is 2nd on the Sox in OBP among qualifiers. That's simply wonderful. But in this great sport of baseball, it's much more important to outperform, ya know, your actual peers. Not to be the tallest midget among your non-Konerko horses*** teammates. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 02:07 PM) Kershaw vs Lincecum tonight. Kershaw could potentially wrap up the CY award with a dominant performance. Yeah

Hudson with a CG win. *cue the it doesn't count because it came against the Padres comments*

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 10:49 PM) Rays-Red Sox could get interesting. The Rays take these next two and it definitely gets interesting. I wish the Rays had called up Jennings earlier.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 11:01 PM) Barely a 3-page game thread? Lol, wow. They're getting shorter and shorter. Especially on the weekends. Yet those who want a rebuild don't know what they're in for. I realize Soxtalk makes up a very small minority of Sox fans. But bring this crap back next year and 5-page or less game threads will become the rule.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 10:44 AM) I always liked this kid. You can't help but root for him. My wife even thought he should have been given more playing time and we both woukd comment about how he always came ready to play 100%. Good luck Lili adn just get ready for 2012. We need you on the team. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 03:15 PM) This sucks. Get ready for 2012 Lil'dude Who can backup Paulie at 1B for the rest of the year. Really hate seeing Dunn on the field. Anybody to call up? Or use Vizquel at 1B sometimes? Hmmmm. Might be something to Milk's theory. lol.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 04:45 PM) I'd agree, but I also believe OPS is a statistic that ultimately weights SLG too highly in comparison with OBP, and that using OPS is especially problematic with traditional leadoff hitters. Which is why wOBA is the best metric out there to gauge one's offensive value because it measures OBP/SLG equally. And, of course, JP comes up well short there, too.
