  1. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 07:37 PM) As much as it pains me to say, I absolutely love what Boston has done so far this offseason. They're the best run organization in baseball, IMO. They've totally offset Bay's bat and then some with Lackey/Cameron/Beltre.
  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 06:45 PM) According to Peter Gammons, Beltre to Red Sox, 1 year, $9 million, with a player option for $5 million next year? Outstanding move by Boston. Their defense has been elevated a ton with the additions of Cameron/Beltre. They're obviously attempting to get it done via pitching/defense in 2010. I like their chances.
  3. I hope we hang on to Mitchell. I've learned over the years never to get too attached to a prospect with KW as GM. But Mitchell's upside is tantalizing. I also liked the read on Miguel Gonzalez. He should be a fun player to track this year.
  4. QUOTE (heirdog @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 02:16 PM) Yes, I think the people that question Frank's HOF credentials look at the 2003-2007 Frank Thomas and think he's a glorified Jack Cust and forget the monster he was for the majority of his career. You say that as if he wasn't good those years. OPS's of .952, .997, .905, .934 and .857. Certainly not the hitter he was during his prime. But still very, very productive.
  5. Some of you guys are wound up wayyy too tight. I was expecting an abomination of an article. Peavy is a proven ace. But he's going from a pitchers paradise to a hitters haven (and a superior league).
  6. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jan 1, 2010 -> 01:05 PM) J4L, just found this interesting piece on BA. Hudson is considered the 14th ranked prospect in their weekly piece "Prospect Hot Sheet" dated Sep 10 2009. Take it for what it is. I think it gives a good argument for Hudson being in the top 50 going into next season. Link : http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prosp...009/268861.html He might very well be in their top 50. I'm just saying the consensus is that he's a good, not great, prospect.
  7. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jan 1, 2010 -> 12:26 PM) This is the part that is really hard to decide upon. Do we wait and let Huddie develop into a solid front line starter or do we go for broke since it is obvious that we are maybe one key and critical piece away from the ALCS/WS (KW is in "Win Now" mode)? I have backed off the Agon stuff now as I thought it was water under the bridge. But the fact the Huddie won the MILBy award gives me hope that it will increase his value to the point where he can become the key center piece in a run for Agon at the trading deadline. I know wrong thread but this is relevant to the Agon stuff and to Huddie. Or on the flip side you have him locked up cheap at least until the end of 2013 (3 arb years plus 1 pre-arb which should not be terribly expensive). Winning a MILB award is not going to in anyway enhance Hudson's value. He's pretty much viewed as a mid-rotation starter with the maximum upside of a #2. Nowhere is he considered a blue-chip or an elite prospect. That doesn't mean he can't go on and become a stud. Just saying that's his status at the moment.
  8. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) So they got another player with initials MB from Texas, you think they would learn.. That was EXTREMELY corny. But I did laugh.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 04:06 PM) How would the organization look if we kept holding on to all of these failures instead? I think you misunderstood me. I'm not implying one bit that we shoud've hung on to any of the mostly bums that we've traded over the years. Point is that we need to stop drafting bums in the first place. Now I've, like many, erased the drafts of 2000-2006 from my memory. I realize how inexact drafting is. But that's just dropping the ball over and over and over again. To the White Sox's credit, they obviously realized this was a big problem and have made sweeping changes throughout the minor league organization, from new managers/scouts to drafting philosophy. And I commend them for that. I'm just saying that we're never going to be a perennial contender if we can't produce at least a league average (above average would be gravy) player every now and then. Yes, we got Beckham. But it took a 90 loss season. And it would've been very hard to botch a top 10 pick from the '08 draft. As it's looking like a stellar class. But the cost-control benefits that comes with being able to filter in your own talent is invaluable.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 03:14 PM) Until our minor leaguers start consistantly panning out... No thanks. But how are we ever gonna get to that point if we keep trading them the minute their value peaks? I see what you're saying. Guys like Joe Borchard, Brian Anderson and Josh Fields have scarred some for life. But there's going to come a time in which we're going to have to actually draft AND develop from within. If we could spend like some of the other big market teams, this wouldn't be a real issue. As I've said many times, props to KW for being able to consistently get rid of crap before anybody realizes they're crap. But I'm getting sick of multiple reclamation projects every year. I'm getting sick of 'change of scenery' guys every year. I'm disgusted that we've got Juan Pierre manning LF for the next two years. If we could develop our own talent, we wouldn't have to rely so heavily on this method that we've adopted over the last decade. Which obviously has proven that it's no recipe for year-in and year-out success. Fortunately, we're not in the AL east. Or we'd really be in trouble.
  11. Good move for them. I wouldn't have gone 3 years. But it's fine at 5 million per. I'd definitely take Byrd over Pierre.
  12. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 10:58 AM) Have they shown the top 10 plays of the decade in baseball yet on ESPN? They have done the NFL and NBA, but not MLB yet? Curious to see if Wise/Iguchi/Alexei get on there, def. Wise though. Jeter's ball flip in game 3 of the 2001 ALDS was the play of the decade, IMO.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 07:57 PM) But he's slow, and he strikes out...and jeesh, all he does is hit home runs... Somebody on here, I'm too drunk to remember who, said they didn't want Thome back because his OPS was like .471 with the Dodgers last year. THAT WAS IN 17 AT BATS!!! Pathetic.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 07:34 PM) Here's something that may surprise you, Jim Thome's OPS with the White Sox when he was 36-39 was exactly the same as Matt Holliday's career OPS. Not surprising to me. Jim Thome has to be the most disrespected (good player) in the history of Soxtalk. It baffles me the number of "anybody but Thome" posts I've seen of late. That leads me to believe most people just want to see something different, regardless of if it's a legitimate upgrade or not, at DH in 2010.
  15. QUOTE (SockMe @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 04:05 PM) can't really answer this til Carter does something in the Big leagues It doesn't matter what Carter does. If CQ never reaches his 2008 level and CC becomes a stud then it's all hindsight after that. You can't say in 2008 it was a steal then say (if CQ struggles and Carter produces) it was a bad trade in 2010. Doesn't work that way. Or at least it shouldn't work that way.
  16. QUOTE (soxfan-kwman @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 04:35 PM) What will Freddy's record be this year? My guess would be maybe 10-13 victories. If he is super healthy 14-15 games. Prediction: 12-9 Forget about record, as there's really no way to project that. The league average ERA and WHIP in 2009 was 4.34/1.39. If Freddy can stay at or slightly below those averages, I'll be elated.
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 02:00 PM) This is not a flame, just wondering what guys like Rios have been doing since the end of the season. He doesn't have the kind of body that appears to balloon, so he probably doesn't have to worry about what he eats or drinks in terms of getting fat. what do players do? I would guess they go to the gym if they are in the cold weather climate and maybe do some running if they live in the warm weather. Another reference to Alex Rios' physique. Would you just admit that you find him somewhat attractive? It's no big deal. I used to have a crush on Ron Gant.
  18. This isn't surprising. When your FB tops out at 88 MPH on a good day, you damn well better have some pretty good off-speed stuff. I would imagine Freddy's split-fingered FB induces the most strikes outside of the zone.
  19. QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 10:04 AM) Wright put up a line of .307/.390/.447/.837 last season, and he stole 27 bases. I wish White Sox players had those kinds of problems. QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 11:56 AM) In a "poor" year, he'd have led the White Sox in average, OBP, and (without adjusting for the ballpark) been third in OPS, second in total bases, and second in steals. The guy is brutal. Edit: I just checked, and he actually would have led the White Sox in OPS+ too. Sounds like you're arguing with yourself. Nobody implied David Wright was Corky Miller last year. And who cares how many categories he would've led a s***ty Sox offense in. David Wright consistently sported OPS's of well over .900 (topping out at .963 in 2007). An .837 OPS is a significant drop-off.
  20. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 29, 2009 -> 07:19 PM) Oh yeah, you know, I totally forgot about him. My bad. Well you did say their rotation was a lot like the Twins'. The Twins have nobody remotely close to Santana. Maybe you should've said after Johan, their rotation is a lot like the Twins'?
  21. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 29, 2009 -> 05:09 PM) Another year of not getting to the World Series by you-know-who. True. But the division overall might be the second best in baseball.
  22. That NL east is looking mighty solid.
  23. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 28, 2009 -> 05:11 PM) I'll stick with my original answer and say that it's because Carter was a year younger and two/possibly three levels lower. Also, you think all of Quentin's injuries have been fluky and perhaps he's just not an injury prone guy? Not sure yet. I think 2010 will definitely tell us if he's just been unlucky or is he legitimately injury prone. But CQ has raked at every level from college to the pros when healthy. I have no reason to believe he won't rake next year, outside of injury. Now if you're asking if I know for certain CQ is going to be injury prone from here on out, yeah, I'd definitely take Carter back. But that's the only way I take Carter back.
  24. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 28, 2009 -> 05:00 PM) Obviously not, as Carter just finished A+ Ball in 2008. Or maybe because CQ was a freak injury away from probably winning the AL MVP?
