QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jun 17, 2005 -> 10:53 AM) honestly I cannot fault a pitcher for wiping his brow. It is so hot on the field in their uniforms, and they are constantly throwing, alot of sweat builds up on your head. If this is somehow cheating, then they all cheat. You don't wipe it with your hand do you? I go with the sleeve or pull my shirt up. I might as well leave it on my head if I'm just going to transfer it to my head...unless I want 6 more inches of movement.

8. Missed who snapped the second 8 game streak, and who snapped Garland's 8-0 record.

Neither Konerko or Huff are platoon players. If Guardado was acquired, Hermanson drops into the set-up role. Crede isn't such a liability that we absolutely must improve upon 3B. This isn't MVP baseball, sir. These moves just aren't realistic and frankly, they don't make much sense either.

If she were my neighbor, she'd have a nice few surprises the following morning. Keep the ball you old hag, enjoy a car full of dish soap, a deck smothered in s***, a newly painted driveway and a lawn full of dead grass.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 11:03 AM) I'm not certain of the exact years he ran the St. Louis Browns but I do know he got them yanked out of St. Louis, he had Milwaukee and Baltimore playing off one another to get them. Milwaukee ended up getting the Boston Braves and the Browns became the Baltimore Orioles (one year apart IIRC). The Browns were almost always the red headed step child of St. Louis, to my knowledge the Cardinals were always the undisputed king there. Bill Veeck was a great one for crying poor but he always made a killing when he sold/moved the franchises. He was a very good businessman and promoter. The way I've always understood it is that Veeck would have ran the Cardinals out of St. Louis if they were not bought by Busch. As it was happening, Veeck's Brown's attendence was rising, and the Cardinals dropping. Veeck's profits were rising, the Cardinals were dropping. And not at a small pace, a rather large chunk on both ends. And as Veeck put it, "I would have run the Cardinals out of St. Louis, I’m sure of it, except for one thing. Saigh had gotten himself into income-tax trouble. He had already been indicted by mid-1952, and I had to face the possibility that he might have to sell the team. What a lousy thing for him to do to me. "I wasn’t going to run Gussie Busch out of town. And I certainly wasn’t going to run Anheuser-Busch Inc. out of town. Busch wasn’t buying the club himself, the brewery was buying it. The brewery could run the club as part of its advertising budget, lose an unlimited amount of money and just write it off the company profits. By the time I hung up the receiver, I knew I had been knocked out of the box."

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 06:41 AM) That was a long, long time ago. And to be honest, I am not too familiar with his time in St. Louis. Things and people have changed. When he ran the White Sox in the 70's his team had to win to draw. Tell me how he made the White Sox of the late 70s respectable? They had 1 good season in 1977, not so coincidently the best attendance year. They were brutal in 76,78,79,80. Maybe if he dropped a mural of people over the closed outfield upper deck during many of the games those seasons, he would have drawn more. He never had any cash to work with in Chicago. Reinsdorf has more of a luxury than Bill Veeck was ever given.

QUOTE(Jake @ Jun 15, 2005 -> 09:33 PM) My only concern is does he have enough pitches? Does Johan Santana? Just throw good strikes, baby.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 15, 2005 -> 08:59 PM) Not really. Look at the attendance figures when he was the owner. He damn near ran the St. Louis Cardinals out of St. Louis. He took bum franchises and made them respectable.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 15, 2005 -> 05:11 PM) Funny thing is most if not all of the other places in MLB that draw the most don't have any gimmicks to get people in the park. I think Veeck is overestimating how many people would come out to the park for a crazy gimmick. Come see the opera singing ushers? I would bet you would be annoyed by the second inning. The tarp with fans drawn on it? That is the dumbest idea of all time. The old Comiskey kiosk? You visit it once for 2 minutes, look at the cheap, overpriced t-shirts and other novelties and never come back. Who cares about the trains? Writing things with chalk? That wouldn't be worth the expense of getting someone up to write it every day. People painting themselves and standing like statues? I see that at Water Tower Place. Not the most exciting thing to see. The way to increase attendance is to increase the season ticket base. People are like sheep. When they see the White Sox are drawing well they will want to go to games. The best way to increase the season ticket base is to offer better incentives and discounts to season ticketholders. Right now there is a discount, but is really not that much considering the commitment that is being made, and the other discounts that are available to non-season ticketholders. Two words: Bill Veeck. Gimmicks work.

Maybe I'm nuts, but I liked a lot of those ideas. His idea of the unexpected is probably the best thing the Sox can do to bring out fans. "Maybe unfurl a large canvas, with people painted on it, from the roof over Section 557, making it look like the seats were full.." that is an absolute brilliant idea if you ask me. It's funny and lighthearted and will certainly bring attention to the stadium and the team. Drag queens as rakers might be a bit extreme, but if you saw something that bizarre, wouldn't you get a kick out of it? It's these small things the White Sox don't offer that Veeck believes will bring fans to the park. Comiskey Park, while great to most of us here because we're all die hard baseball fans, is boring and dull to those that don't give a s*** about the game. Magicians, opera singers, ushertainers...these are all great ideas.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jun 14, 2005 -> 02:24 PM) But as bad as this is it pale's in comparison to what's going on in IL. In 2002 a 16 yr old Naperville girl was drugged with ecstasy & gang raped by a group of men. They video-taped the event. When the police went looking to charge them with rape many of them fled the country. Two stayed. One was convicted for taping the incident & is serving less than 6 months. The other was acquitted of all charges on the basis that it appeared consensual on the tape. Never mind the fact that the girl had been drugged. Now one has returned from Serbia (supposedly the ring leader in this affair) & is confident he will be cleared as well. The girl & her family have filed civil suits as well. This is a horrible precedent & if the remaining rapists get off it will make it very difficult to prosecute rape cases like this in the future. Apparently it's ok to gang rape a 16 yr old girl in the state of IL as long as you drug her up good & tape the affair. Apparently it's reasonable to assume that a 16 yr old girl would consent to being spit upon & written upon with a major marker as well. At least for her sake Sonny's conviction means the state acknowledged that the tape was made w/out her consent. At least she has legal recourse to keep it off the internet. As one who is raising an early/pre teen this story scares the s*** out of me. I consider child molestation in the terms of Jacko worse than what went on with those four boys. Two of them went to my former high school and I had an inside beat on pretty much everything that went on. It's a scary thing indeed, but I've heard of much worse that didn't even get taken to court. Terrible thing to say or know, but things happen...and raising children that age, you have a lot more to worry about then you think.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 15, 2005 -> 02:26 AM) I refuse to see this movie or War of the Worlds.... You will not get my money you f***in media whores. I wouldn't call War of the Worlds a media whore movie. This is Stephen Speilberg we're talking about, he's quite an established filmmaker. Not the best by any means, but he's never been known for making the Hollywood crap we've come to know in this day and age. I hate a blockbuster as next as the other person and I won't be seeing Batman Begins, but Speilberg is Speilberg.

QUOTE(knightni @ Jun 14, 2005 -> 04:53 PM) We lost each of those years in the playoffs. The original statement was we hadn't won a playoff series since 1917. Not a World Series. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but the ALDS and ALCS are considerd playoff series. But also, I don't believe there was a DS in 1959, and maybe not even a CS. Might not have even been a DS in 93, I don't remember.

QUOTE(VAfan @ Jun 14, 2005 -> 12:51 PM) We haven't even won a playoff series since 1917. 1959. 1993. 1919.

QUOTE(Carlo Paz @ Jun 14, 2005 -> 12:05 PM) There is no doubt that Pauly is the weakest link on this team. A cleanup hitter that fails to score a runner from third with less than two outs SIXTY PERCENT OF THE TIME!!!!! I'm not sure I'd keep Konerko over Timo. :headshake

I'll be one of the first to say that team chemistry is overrated, but I don't think Griffey will do wonders for their club house. This is a deal I'd stay away from. He also doesn't fit anything we have. You just can't play him over Rowand. Podsenik is too valuable to place on the bench, and as far as I've seen Jermaine Dye is getting the job done. With a healthy Thomas and a decent Everett, he can't fit in the DH role. Our problems aren't solved with Ken Griffey Jr. unless he can play 3B or throw nasty stuff in the bullpen.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 14, 2005 -> 04:09 PM) WTF were you doing listening to their conversations and not hitting on them? What were you thinking? One time there was this young guy behind a bunch of other hot girls and he was complaining about how they didn't know anything about baseball instead of hitting on them.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 13, 2005 -> 12:36 AM) That's the problem with Brower. I wish he was a lefty. We need a lefty reliever more than anything. With Neal Cotts coming around, I beg to differ. A right hander would be much more helpful to the Sox bullpen.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 11, 2005 -> 04:57 AM) It should. Why shouldn't we stop b****ing about it? If enough people were brave enough to b****, and call people out on it, it would go away. b****, b****, b****. Beck Hanson (no, not one of the losers from the teeny-bop group, Beck Hanson as in Beck. The BECK.) is the only white guy I've seen that can dance.

Hopefully it's better than Hail to the Thief. I wasn't a big fan of that. Kid A was amazing.
