  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 10:50 AM) He's not baiting, he truly believes this. He will be on the Newark Bears message board in 2 years sticking up for Jenks when he's throwing 85 mph. No he doesn't. This is greg's way of being sarcastic. Read this again good.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 10:45 AM) No, the closer is designed to save each and every game and not fail. He also should not be overweight and have a goatee. He should not walk people ever or have runners get on base. He should be perfect or move onto the next guy. A closer should pitch like Jenks did in June when he got save after save. And after those saves he should get no credit because he's just doing his job and earning the multi millions. You are just baiting. Very troll like. I can't be the only one that sees this.
  3. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 19, 2010 -> 12:11 AM) I'll admit, I've never been a huge fan of Bobby, but his post game comments were ridiculous today and just because of them, he should take a role as middle reliever for a while. "I didn't have it," closer Bobby Jenks said after failing to retire any of the four batters he faced and ending a streak of 15 save conversions. "My cutter was coming back. My sinker wasn't sinking. The slider was big. I just didn't have my stuff." So f***ing what Bobby? Not every pitcher is gonna have his good stuff everyday. This is just a p**** ass excuse by you and everyone knows that. You f***ing stunk today. And just because your stuff was flat doesn't mean you have to walk the first two batters. If you throw strikes, you will always have a shot. There's just no need for players making lame ass, p**** excuses like this. Bobby, take a seat for a while. Believe it or not, there is such a thing as bad pitches in the strike zone. Strikes as you call them. They are thrown all day, every day, by the best of them. When a ball is hit out of the park... where is it generally thrown? In the strike zone. Gapper? Strike zone. Line shot sin... well you get the point (should). Yes, the walks sucked, first and foremost they were the reason they lost. But how about when he threw a pitch for strikes after those two batters? He got hit. He had ''none stuff'' as they say. He was equivalent to batting practice. QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Jul 19, 2010 -> 12:27 AM) I will still never understand why Bobby (and the sox brass) felt he needed to be a "true pitcher." He is a closer. This dude has like 6 god damn pitches in his arsenal, that most of the time, aren't needed. Most closers in the game have 2, maybe 3 solid/good/great pitches to get guys out with. (unless your name is Mariano, but he is a freak) He would have been perfectly fine (probably one of the best in the game) if he was still throwing 98+ with that 12 to 6 curve. And if he really wanted to add a third pitch, a change-up would be been more than good enough. You don't need a cutter, slider, sinker, etc.. in your arsenal as a closer. Mariano Rivera throws 1 pitch 9.5 out of 10 times and gets hitters out even when they know it's comming. Billy Wagner had a 99+ mph fastball he threw 8 out of 10 times and a slider. Trevor Hoffman, in his prime, had a 96+ mph fastball and one of the best change-ups this game has ever seen, and when he got old, he had a 85-87 mph fastball and one of the best change-ups this game has ever seen. On average it's been proven the more pitches thrown in an arsenal the less successful a pitcher will be... and it's more prevalent in relievers. Anymore than four pitches in an arsenal is generally considered overkill. It's just not a necessity to throw a 5-6 different types of pitches when several of them are below average. No one is getting fooled by pitches with limited movement and bad placement. Instead of having 2 plus pitches with 3-4 bad ones mixed it.... the better route to go is limit the variation of pitches you throw, and work on making your plus pitches, plus, plus. Once, (if) that ability is obtained, a pitchers show me pitches (whatever they may be) look all that more impressive when used properly. Honestly though i cannot find the studies in my favorites which break down the very subject. If i come across them, which i am not gonna purposely look for them, i will post them. It does not appear to be a coincidence to me that this is jenks worst year, far and away, to date. The amount of changeups he has thrown thrown is higher (2.3 times extended) to go along with a 4.7% unknown percentage. The reason i do not feel his struggles are a coincidence... is because when a pitcher does not have a good feel for a certain pitch... it tends to carry over elsewhere, hence how erratic he has been the entire season. Anyone with the ability to see should be able to tell this has been the case with jenks this year. The change has hindered him mightily in my opinion. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 19, 2010 -> 07:43 AM) No, some players will actually admit when they f*** up and not make excuses. And not having your good stuff is no excuse for walking the first two batters you faced. There ain't no need for BS. Either say "I f***ed up tonight and I'm going to go back to work and do everything I can to get better." Don't give some bulls*** excuse that any non-idiot baseball fan can see through. Not having your good stuff is not an excuse for walking people? That seems like the only logical answer for walking people (unless you straight up got squeezed batter after batter... which was not the case). You don't walk two batters without recording an out if you have your stuff working for you. Jenks said what the whole world saw. He told it how it is. He hid no place. Jenks should not have to state something that should already be a given for every player... of course he wants to improve on his season and yesterdays game. It's a shame because it's doubtful you will even understand how far out the things you said are. ============================================================================== Jenks has not killed us yet, yet that is. We are fortunate for that being the case thus far. With the way jenks has pitched this season, he very well may hit a patch in which he blows 3 of 4, or 4 of 6. He really has gotten that damn lucky. With this being said, if jenks loses that change almost entirely, i think he has the ability to still be a very important piece in the pen. If the sox are going to make the playoffs... and excel in them... we need him as vitally as anyone.
  4. QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 04:23 PM) Please don't tell me that the board is going to go back to how it was a month ago. There is no doubt about it.
  5. Garcia has been nothing short of outstanding this season. MVP.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 17, 2010 -> 05:26 PM) Caught this in the trib yesterday: Tribune article Lazzeretti is one of my childhood best friend's dad, and really just a nice, down to earth guy. I saw "The Merry Gentleman" and it was good, but not great. I felt like it was just missing something to make it great, and I feel like that was because Keaton produced it since Ron became sick with appendicitis during the making of it. I would recommend renting it and checking out this locally made movie. He's also done many other nationally recognized projects such as the anti-teen smoking campaign awhile back, and also the Coors Light football coaches commercials (cant say Im a fan of those though haha). Just thought it was pretty cool to see the Tribune give some recognition to some of the talent in Chicago. There were only four known producers on this project... and keaton was not one of them... he did however direct. This very well might be the reason that you felt something was missing from it.
  8. QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Jul 17, 2010 -> 04:43 PM) I still remember his find on hitter's protection in the lineup. (and if there really is "protection") Just outstanding stuff. There is a reason I call him "Kalapse BEFORE Kalapse" back in the golden years of ST. One of my personal favorite posters here when he actually does post. Now that I'm done stroking his ego, the guy really needs to loosen up, not be so serious, and crack a smile more often. Kal at least kills posters with kindness when he makes points. I'm only ''serious'' when stupidity is involved. When something that is blatantly wrong and harped on until the end of time it's highly irritating. If that makes me look like a grouch, prick, or someone that people dislike, well then so be it. Most people cannot handle criticism, due to ego, i on the other hand welcome it, and like being pointed in the right direction when incorrect. Being a stubborn person just for the sake of it gets people no place fast. Ignorance is no fun, and tells a lot about a person.
  9. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 17, 2010 -> 04:37 PM) What he's getting at is something that I don't think exists but would be a pretty awesome resource if it did. Pitch f/x will tell you how often a pitcher throws a ball in the strike zone but nothing about his ability to hit the catcher's mitt, which is what he's looking for. The glove is such a minimal part of the plate. What does he mean by hit the catchers mitt? Literally zero movement in any direction? That is kinda far fetched. By kinda i mean extremely. An inch or so in any direction? Realistically you would have to think some form of leeway would be needed. Something to factor in... just because a catcher sets up in one place, that does not necessarily mean the pitch was intended to go there. That's especially the case when there are men on base, to try and prevent the batter from an advantage. I would wager that the percentage of times a pitcher hits a catchers mitt without the glove being moved in any direction is in the single digits. Remember i am saying single digits do to the fact zero movement would be involved. I personally don't think very much would be taken out of this particular study due to it being far too strict. Realistic guidelines would have to be set, and all the variables would have to be understood, before someone could even imagine taking this sort of task down. Ridiculous amount of time and dedication wouldn't hurt either.
  10. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 17, 2010 -> 09:19 AM) I beat him to it. Yes, the only thing missing was a ''crazy yet informal/long read (which no one even bothers reading so i have given up even trying). What i take from that (too long of a read/what they are reading is foreign to them) is people either have extremely short attention spans, or they lack the interest it takes to learn, for it to no longer be foreign to them. Anyway, if you would like to learn some very cool things sometime soon... things i have learned from scouring the deep depths of the internet... make sure to stop by the chat during the mariners series if you can. I'm sure you would end up teaching kalapse and myself a thing or two also, which you undoubtedly would. I say this because you really do have a hang of what your saying. It's a nice change of pace. The offer is out there... it could be fun.
  11. Four earned runs against slowey on 39 pitches. Looking good so far.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 15, 2010 -> 07:26 PM) Everyone with a really good AB but AJP. Be nice for Danks to get us back in the dugout up 2. I'll take a 26 pitch first inning.
  13. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 15, 2010 -> 05:54 PM) Well.... after thinking it over, (and pressure from some other posters. ) I will like to indeed, change my name back to my original name when I first started here since the man is back. (though who knows how long he will be back here, but he is back) J.Reedfan8 please. So you traded one s*** name, for another s*** name, just to go back to the original s*** name.
  14. Likely not gonna be around tonight... but this needs to be bumped. Would be nice to get a good crowd in there for the first game back against a division rival such as the twins.
  15. We all know jermaine dye was a good outfield, a plus outfielder. Clearly that makes quentin an amazing fielder, a ++ even.
  16. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 03:18 PM) Should be a 3-hit game for Hot Fire. Screw the scorer who ruled his last AB as an error! Can we filter out that nickname guys? Any admins or mods reading this?
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 02:34 PM) I agree Boesch isn't going to hit .340 but the guy is for real in my opinion. We're going on 240 ABs here and he really hasn't had any prolonged slumps. The ball jumps off his bat and he's going to be surrounded by some pretty solid hitters. I expect his BA to fade a bit, but not so much his power numbers. I doubt he is in the league in a couple seasons. His minor league numbers suggest such. Very mediocre minor league career. I see him being a flash in the pan.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 02:33 PM) Wow, Beckham is not very good at those plays. Once again, why is Jones playing these slap hitters so damn deep? As i just said in the chat... i have seen him make about two catches like that all season... with 10+ dropping in for a hit... all seemingly with men on.
  19. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 01:52 PM) Milk, while I "get" that you're trying to be funny here, this is not really the place for that. We're trying to decide the future of the Soxtalk's membership, I'd hate to see your humor misunderstood. I just don't get it. Green is what you are supposed to use when implying sarcasm... highly sarcastic even. When green is not used for something ''sarcastic'' or a ''joke'' people get made fun of like they are fools because they do not follow the lead. What he said was green, hence making it fair game, whether he intended otherwise or not. No other way to interrupt it. No one in there right mind would insult flasoxx... as the general consensus is he is the best poster to grace these boards. No one (sure might be a couple crazy people) dislikes flasoxx, you are just grasping for straws. f***ed if you do, f***ed if you don't.
  20. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) I don't like suspending people or being "that guy" but someone has to. I happen to like you, Y2HH. Your warn level is 40% if you were curious. There is no "suspend Y2HH" button although maybe I'll talk to Kap about getting one, that'd make it more convenient. A 40% warn level is child's play.
  21. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 05:02 PM) Can we get a chatroom going for this? No one is stopping you guys. http://www.soxtalk.com/chat/chatroom.html It's gonna be a barrel of laughs seeing all the reactions.
