  2. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 03:06 PM) Why was Dotel even brought in the last two days? Complete waste of innings. Linebrink was warming up last night as well. Believe it or not 4 runs was not impossible to overcome.
  3. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 02:37 PM) Can you get that with runners on? If it was possible i would... Risp... 29 at-bats... .207 .303 .552 .855 Runners on... 77 at-bats... .299 .333 .455 .788

  5. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 02:43 AM) Qwerty, if you feel the need to tell me to get my head out of my ass fine, but I -- personally -- will have little room with him struggling. Not with Beckham. And, again, I mean hitting under .200 for an extended period of time (several weeks) struggling. Looking Dewayne Wise overmatched every AB. I've seen it too many times with other prospects. Considering where Beckham was drafted overall, and how quickly he has risen through the system (even if it is because of other players struggling), expectations should be high. I'm speaking of those flip flopping types that are prone to changing their mind about any given player three times in a single game. Going from sucking an individual player off, to wanting to murder that individuals entire family. You are far from the type of person i was directing that at.
  6. Betemit was put in a position to fail. Betemit also just so happens to be a national league player. Betemit is a solid hitter when utilized correctly. Betemit was not utilized correctly with the yankees, and he was far an away their most disliked player on the roster. His equivalent in the terms of the sox would be OMIT, and not because of his lack of hitting, it was his fielding. Before my computer crashed i had hilarious posts regarding betemit from nyyfans bookmarked, and that was prior to him being traded here, he sounded like bad news since day once. Then he started killing the ball in spring training and people were talking about how he mashes righties (.800 ops against coming into the season... which is not mashing by any means) i just knew he was bound to disappoint. Given the opportunity to hit, he likely would have (50 sporadic plate appearances is nothing in the grand scheme) but he never even gave himself the chance. Betemit had 8 chances at third, 4 of which ended up in an error... and at first he was jabbing at seemingly everything that came his way, whether it was in the dirt or not. People here feel fields will be traded soon. Fields has been one of the worst position players in the majors leagues this season. People here love trying to get rid of our garbage for something of worth, like everyone around the majors has a blindfold on. I can't see it, does not make a bit of sense. Though if he does get moved, it will be to a weak national league team with a glaring hole, and time to spend on a project, which he is at best. Realistically, i don't see fields sticking in the majors for too long, unless he starts to show that legitimate extra base power from 2007, i have my doubts. I am rather surprised they made beckham take the jump so quickly. But then again... How i see it, he would not have been up now if the season played out ideally AKA everyone producing roughly around league average, if not better. The problem is fields, betemit, getz, and ramirez more than forced their hand to make the move. Beckham is not polished defensively, but the thing is, defense is something that can be polished in the majors, much easier than the hitting aspect of the game. Not that two wrongs make a right, but the sox have been a bad team defensively for years now, and he is simply an upgrade over betemit defesively (yes... offensively too) even on his worst day. Btw, one of the seldom things i have ever agreed with bearsox on is... beckham's position should not be a big deal. This is not fantasy baseball in which you need a certain amount of production for that player to warrant his roster spot. There are set standards for every position out there, we all known them. Now does that mean the only way to win a championship is by these standards? Give me a break. Teams have been known to have weak hitting third baseman, though a bopper in center, weak right fielder, strong hitting second baseman, etc... you just need the proper balance all around the field. I personally like beckham at short, long term, and that is if he can improve defensively. Ramirez has been better than expected at short, and ozzie has definitely taken notice. It seem unlikely he will be moved from short, even for beckham, unless he has hit below the mendoza line by seasons end. The end of anderson seems to be around the corner though... which may possibily free up a spot for ramirez? Who knows, way too early to predict. I, like everyone else, hopes that beckham produces from game one, and for the next six seasons straight. But if he starts his career like most every other player to ever play this beautiful game, and he *gasp* is underwhelming *gasp* i will be the first one to talk s*** and get your head out of your ass. So many people here have their expectations raised so high that they never allow themselves to enjoy anything, it's depressing.

  10. QUOTE (Cubano @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 10:56 PM) Than you very much. I was waiting for someone to point it out. You have a SS making this amount of errors who clearly has some work to do in his position. Now, let's move him to an unfamiliar position. How about if Beckham begins to struggle in AAA from now on or in the big league once promoted? How about if Viciedo hits 800 from now on in AA? Should had Ozzie sent Alexei to the minors after a dismal first month? Was he ready for the Majors? He hit 200. Would that prove one is ready and the other is not? Viciedo K/AB OBP SLG April 4.05 244 299 May 5.04 316 397 Beckham probably has seen these pitchers in college and A ball. Viciedo saw them in AA for the first time. I like the way he is making adjusments to them. What I am disappointed the most about Viciedo is his D. 11 errors is dismal. His fielding in Cuba was not that great either. Hopefully, he can make adjustments and improved but I doubt it. Players rarely change. You are who you are. I had this discussion before with NorthSideSox72. There are some exceptions to the rule of course. Josh Fields is fielding 950 and he can hit the fastball. He is so late against an MLB fastball that you can go smoke a Cohiba and Fields has not finished his swing yet. Actually these are viciedo's numbers... April: K/AB - 3.85 ==== OBP .232 ==== Slugging .286 ==== OPS .518 May: K/AB - 5.04 ==== OBP .314 ==== Slugging .397 ==== OPS .711 This only bothers you because you think they are gonna block viciedo, if he were to make the majors at any point. Shortstop is the second most important position behind catcher, and third base is in the back end of the defensive spectrum. To me it makes sense to have beckham make the transition, so he can hurt his team as little as possible in the long run, viciedo means nothing at this point, in comparison with beckham. The sox brass, in my opinion, are not worried about blocking viciedo with beckham. If and when viciedo does come around offensively, something can and will be worked out when the time calls for it (a move to either first or a corner).
  11. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 02:00 AM) Dude had a 7 or 8 game hit streak until tonight. Give him a break. Dude has 53 strikeouts compared to 55 total bases for a .632 ops. Dude had 4 extra base hits in the month of may, and a whopping five extra bases hits in april. Dude had an ops of .646 prior to the oakland game, which was his highest since may 16th. Dude, as expected, has been one of the very worst fielders in all of baseball, let alone third base. He has been garbage. A break in not deserved
  12. QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 31, 2009 -> 07:57 PM) Your parameters seem off to me. Because . . . Tony Clark David Ross Mark Reynolds Carlos Pena Miguel Olivo Jim Thome BJ Upton Bill Hall Adam Dunn Wilson Betemit Russell Branyan Nick Swisher Jose Bautista Ryan Howard Chris Young Jason LaRue Jack Cust Rickie Weeks Brandon Inge Johh Buck Like i told kalapse earlier today... i screwed this up. It is supposed to be all non-pitchers to have 100+ strikeouts compared to hits... and there are only eleven currently... though dave ross will make twelve any day now. Ross has 267 hits compared to 366 strikeouts. So sorry.

  15. This is the first time since april 11th, 12th, and 13th that the sox have won three consecutive games. First series sweep all season long.
  16. Ryan sweeney has my vote for cy young.
  17. Greinke's ops against is .506, the next closest is sabathia at .608, in the american league. Greinke is yet to give up a single home run, the only qualified pitcher in baseball that can say that. He has thrown 5 complete games (two shut outs), the same as the rangers whole staff has thrown... who just so happen to be tied with the royals for the major league most 5 complete games. Etc, etc, etc...
  18. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 31, 2009 -> 03:50 AM) Alexei Ramirez - 25 PAs, 30 RBIs Obviously not trying to compare Alexei to the best offensive player in the game, but just saying, yeah I love Alexei when the bases are loaded. I meant to put with ''a substantial amount of plate appearances''. I f***ed that up. From 25 to 50, 50 to 100, 100 to 200, etc, is simply a ginormous difference. 12 active hitters (they have all played at some point this season) have more strikeouts in their careers than base hits. All of these hitters have more than than 250 hits and less than 2100 hits... so who are they? There are 5 players that i would be shocked if they are not guessed correctly.
  19. Pujols currently has more RBIs (122) with the bases loaded than he does plate appearances (118). This is an extremely rare occurence, to say the least. Also, jose paniagua is one of only nine pitchers to balk in their first two games, all nine coincidentially made their debuts in the national league. Bartolo colon had a string of 30 starts from 2004-06-06 until 2005-05-07 in which he recorded a decision. This ties him for the 14th longest such streak. Colon is the last pitch to do this since ron guidry from 1983-04-12 1984-04-03. Colon had 1 complete game during this time span, the next lowest during any given streak was 11 by stan bahnsen from 1973-05-30 until 1974-04-06. Colon was 18-12 during that span. Fergie jenkins tops the list with 63 straight decisions from 1970-04-22 until 1971-08-07, in which he went 40-23, threw 46 complete games, for a grand total of 518 innings.
  20. QUOTE (scenario @ May 30, 2009 -> 02:22 PM) Got me. Sad thing turning 50. Can't even remember what year it is. LOL. Castro's contract only runs through 2009, during which his salary is $2.5M... When you consider the season is 1/3 over, that means the Mets have already paid him about $800k. So, we're basically getting him for next to nothing. If it means anything i thought you were no where near 50.
  21. Bannister has the fifth lowest differential in baseball @ fastball velocity and changeup velocity.
  22. Oswalt's peripherals last season were better than two thirds of his career. But if people look at era as the end all, be all, which most do, yes he is on the decline. It was brought up that his era was ''steadily'' on the rise for three seasons in a row. Far from a valid arguement that oswalt is on the decline. 2005- 2.94 era 2006- 2.98 era 2007- 3.18 era 2008- 3.54era People are actually complaining about 0.04 jump of his era, and another .0.20 jump of an era. What about when his era was 3.49 in 2004, coming off of a season in which he posted a 2.97 era? His 0.36 jump in era from 2007 to 2008 means very little in the grand scheme of things, if you delve deeper into things. Peripherals people, look at peripherals.
