  1. I wonder if the move of the Astros to the AL would push San Antonio/Austin up the ladder? I know in the past there was no way the Rangers and Astros would allow a third franchise, especially the Astros, since they seem to be the team of choice in Austin and I think in SA. Still, I can't imagine MLB wouldn't want to go somewhere new...like Portland, Vegas, Nashville.
  2. What percentage of issues being suppressed actually are found out? I ask because it amazes me that it still happens. And it only makes it worse. If someone, ANYONE had called the police and the police actually arrested him, Penn State would've taken a hit, but it certainly wouldn't linger as long as this is. They would be heroes, outing a child molester/abuser. Sure, they would've been raked over the coals when it comes to hiring practices, etc. And I bet a good chunk of the people that have been fired/quit would still have been fired or quit, but the school itself would've gotten through this quicker. Amazing.
  3. Lets Kristin Cavalleri take his pants off, Jay does.
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 02:41 PM) This should get it done. It's fair to both sides. SIGN HIM. Another team will offer more.
  5. Something else we are forgetting...if they expand to 32 teams, do they realign like the NFL with 4 divisions of 4 teams in each league? Or do they contract to 2 8-team divisions in each league? I don't like either of those scenarios either, but the NFL version is probably better.

    Congrats YASNY!

QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 07:12 PM) Nah, he got married instead. POTY?
  7. To me, it kinda depends... In Sandusky's case, he used his own charity to find victims (if indeed he is guilty). If he was accused of embezzlement and giving to his own charity, that's a little different. And yes, I know sexual assault and embezzlement are on two completely different levels of felony. I was just trying to use an example. Although a sexual predator is a sexual predator, no matter what the circumstances are.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 04:16 PM) Make it so, number 2.
  9. Holy Hell! I can't believe this thread is still going!
  10. I'd say 7.5 or an 8. Why? New blood. Plus, one never knows what's going to happen. Everyone starts 0-0. That's always exciting! Plus, it won't be winter anymore.
  11. You know...if this thread lasts long enough, maybe it will be published and in 200 years it will be considered a Joyce-ian masterpiece!
  12. QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Nov 2, 2011 -> 11:01 PM) A harsh reaction to a bad sort of behavior doesn't become unjust simply because the subject (who has free will, mind you) decides he must now resort to an even worse sort of behavior. If you can't use drugs on your own dime, don't use 'em at all. If you commit armed robbery to fund your habit, then you go to prison. It's that simple. If that person is an addict...it's not that easy to just not use them.
  13. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 3, 2011 -> 11:00 AM) 20-30 years ago there also was no 3-point shot and they wore shorts that ended 10 inches above the knee. Just because something is an old tradition doesn't mean it's a good idea. 20-30 years ago, they also knew how to shoot a mid-range jumper and bounce pass. Just because something's new, doesn't make it a good idea either.
  14. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 2, 2011 -> 10:58 AM) Which if it is a team philosophy can be useful. If you have one or two guys working the count and the remainder of the lineup swinging at the first close pitch they see, the walk is not effective. Boston and New York are successful because they can tax a good starter and get them out with the philosophy of fighting off good pitches and taking a ton of pitches. If Adam Dunn looks at a strike down the middle on 2-0 and gets a walk to get to the OPS terrible Alex Rios, this idea has failed. You have to have a team of OPS focused players not just a couple sprinkled in here and there. When Frank Thomas and Ray Durham were in sync it worked to perfection when Julio Franco was there to protect them. When Dan Pasqua was there to protect them, it did not work that well. Don't you DARE defame The Great Pasqua! He was a better version of the right handed Dan Pasqua!
  15. QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Oct 30, 2011 -> 10:20 AM) I don't have any interest in subsidizing unproductive members of society so that they can poison their bodies and continue being unproductive. They don't have to go to prison. They just don't get any benefits. Use that garbage if you'd like, but do it on your own dime. And you try to make that argument about being for the children. Do you really think drug addicted welfare recipients are incredibly worried about using their benefits to provide for those kids? If you want to protect these children, have CPS scoop them up (and yeah, this opens a whole other nanny-state can of worms that I'm not sure I'm OK with). But it's foolish to believe that giving money to these deadbeat parents will ever, at least in any substantial form, reach the hands and mouths of their children. Unfortunately...they won't have that dime, which will lead to other crime, such as theft, burglary, robbing banks, stealing cars, etc. Drug testing isn't the answer. Positive or negative, the taxpayers won't win.
  16. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 03:12 PM) The only thing that could save the Sox if they go down to 80 million roster is the s*** division they are in. That is assuming Ventura can change the mentality of being everybody's whipping boy in the division. If Detroit has gotten its act together and is a real team again, forget it. We'll be out of it in May cause we will be a .500 team AT BEST with that payroll. The 2005 White Sox say hello. (and before you tell me that's 2005 dollars, check out the table) 2005 Baseball Payrolls
  17. Guns scare the bejesus out of me. Why? Because there are wackos? Well, yes, of course. But, I'm afraid of are the wackos you don't know. The ones that COULD pass any exam. The ones that PRETEND to be on the up-and-up. Look, we are too far gone from banning all guns in the country. Ain't gonna happen. But there are too many stressed-out, near-breaking-point people out there that can put on a show for the license. People like GLTI and Alpha are the ones that I'm not afraid of, not because they know HOW to use a gun, but because they know WHEN to use a gun. There is no reason in this society to have a concealed weapon unless you are police or a licensed detective or in some kind of harms way on a daily basis. But, that's JMHO.
  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 08:18 PM) Does anyone here think Cain actually has staying power? His plan to change the title to Godfather of the United States won't go over well.
  19. My problem with Greg Walker (even though I do believe as a hitting coach all you can truly do is be available to help if asked) is the amount of pitches this team saw. Now, given the Ozzie/Joey factor of OBP by AVG, I'm not totally surprised. But this year, only Dunn and Konerko actually looked to take pitches. I can't tell you how many times I said to myself, "Why are you swinging at the first pitch?" This is one reason why you get your Cy Chen's. That seems to be one of the reasons why this team can't hit against pitchers it's never seen before, because it takes 3-4 starts for some of these guys to see all of the pitches. It drove me crazy and the only person I can pin that on, other than the actual player, is the hitting coach. Didn't seem like anyone on this team taught patience. PS...except for '87, Walk didn't walk either.
  20. It's going to be fun watching Hossa this year. He's rested, finally. He's on a line with a major young talent and an enforcer. He rubbed some Jets off the puck last night that just made them look stupid. That's the Hoss we signed for a gazillion years and hope we continue to see.
  21. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 02:37 PM) Sandy called a very good game. Catchers tend to make great managers and I have always said Sandy would be a manager some day. If you have Sandy, you definitely would like to have an experienced bench coach though. I wonder who that would be? See: Mike Scioscia
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 01:48 PM) To be honest, Hawk is more a face of the franchise than Ozzie ever was. As much as he can get on our nerves, I'm happy with him coming back. He was pretty good this year. As long as he doesn't insist on moving Steve Stone to the outfield...I'm thrilled with it.
  23. Dunn has had a strange year, even before it started. Adjusting to DH. Appendectomy. Knee issues. He isn't this bad, but he's in his own head, now. Beckham is coming around. Morel is too young to know yet. Rios, well, there aren't words. Pierre, while he isn't good, works his tail off. I'd rather have that guy than someone who just doesn't seem to care.
  24. QUOTE (The Critic @ Aug 3, 2011 -> 10:50 AM) Maybe they should take a page from their own book and implement "dynamic payment". If you're a player performing so horribly that no one wants to see them (Adam Dunn comes to mind), you get the lowest tier of payment. If you're performing at an All-Star level (see Paul Konerko), you get the highest tier. Then you can assign payment to the rest of the players at pre-determined payment levels in between. Hey, if it works to extort fans who want to see "prime" or "premier" teams, it must be good enough for the players, too. Aaaaaaaand close thread!
