2011-2012 NCAA Basketball Thread
List of All-Time NCAA Basketball NCAA wins. I'll give you 1 - 5 as Top Tier BBall schools. But if that's the case, where do you go from there? UCLA, Indiana, Arizona? If so, Illinois is up there above above-average.

2011-2012 NCAA Basketball Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 6, 2012 -> 03:56 AM) I'm not asking this to be an ass, but what kind of pressure is their at Illinois that there isn't at another school? It's not like Illinois is some national powerhouse. They are a middle of the road/stepping stone type program that occassionally succeeds and makes the tournament but doesn't do it consistently. I understand that Illini fans want and expect more, but I don't really think there is pressure of the Illinois job. Illinois is arguably the best school never to win a title. I've seen it debated on shows on ESPN, earlier versions of Comcast Sportsnet in Chicago (like Fox Sports net and SportsChannel), Sportswriters on TV, and radio shows. Only Temple, St. Johns and Notre Dame have more wins and never won a championship. So, there's pressure to win as the Illini have gotten so close or had the talent and... I like Bruce Weber. But, it might be time to go. EDIT: An interesting note...only Indiana has more wins in the B1G than Illinois and it's not by much.

Obamanation Re-election MegaThread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 2, 2012 -> 04:26 PM) What are you basing this on? It's just a hunch based on it being a lame duck term. I may be completely off-base, but he doesn't have to worry about being re-elected, so he can go out on a limb more than in his first term.

Bengals Cheerleader, Teacher Sarah Jones Accused of Sex with Student
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 2, 2012 -> 03:37 PM) I think drunk driving certainly harms people. But yeah, I see your point. It absolutely does...but it's an effect of the drinking, not the drinking itself. If you have two people at a bar and only one is drinking...the non-drinker is in no way harmed (unless the drinker doesn't like his face and coldcocks him for no reason). But, if you have those same two people at a bar and one is smoking, you are directly affecting that persons health. That's the major difference.

Bengals Cheerleader, Teacher Sarah Jones Accused of Sex with Student
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 2, 2012 -> 02:23 PM) I'm sure there are a lot of factors - it's not glorified like it used to be, health risks are becoming more and more clear (and obvious on every pack), the price, the inability to smoke indoors, etc. But I think a substantial part of that is it's not mainstream anymore. If you smoke it's because you smoked before or you know someone who does and for some reason want to replicate that. Alcohol is different. Drinking is now where smoking was in the 60's and 70's. Not sure if this was mentioned before, but the tobacco industry was hammered on second hand smoke. The fact that a smoker is affecting a non-smoker was, and is, a HUGE deal. Drinking doesn't have that same stigma, other than what drinking can CAUSE you to do. But the actual act of drinking doesn't harm anyone around him. I think that was a huge win for anti-tobacco.

I have been trying to remember an ancient baseball term
Doing a quick Google search, it's where the term, "Have the upper hand" comes from. You're welcome... /thread.

Obamanation Re-election MegaThread
I don't like President Obama, but I do like Candidate Obama...which is who I think he will be if he is re-elected. Romney is the Republican version of Kerry (out of touch and elitist). Gingrich is, well, just not quite all there. Can't put my finger on it, but he just scares me.

Sox wearing 1972 color uniforms this season
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 07:15 AM) I guess i don't really care for the red stripe uniforms since the team's name is the White Sox and there is another team in the league named the Red Sox. Just kind of weird to me. You'd think they'd avoid highlighting that color in any uniform because of that Yeah, but it's a fashion faux-pas to wear white on white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day...so there's that.

The Republican Thread
I have a question for all of those GOPers out there: If you thought John Kerry was pompous and elitest in 2004 how can you NOT think Mitt Romney is the same? I'll hang up and wait for the answer.

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 10:54 AM) I was willing to give Obama a chance (as I said before, I'd consider myself more of a Democrat than a Republican), but I can't vote for him in 2012. While he isn't to blame for all of it, things have gotten worse under his watch. Change for change's sake isn't always a good plan. Not saying Obama deserves it, but I don't think any of these GOP candidates are what this country needs. What I DO think this country needs is Campaign Obama...not President Obama. If he does win a second term, I think you are going to see more of Campaign Obama. Because as was said so eloquently in the movie The American President, "...I was so busy keeping my job I forgot to do my job." And I think pretty much every president since Reagan probably falls into this category...and maybe even before.

Official 2011-2012 NFL Thread
Not sure if this has been said, but isn't Ruskell's contract the same length as Lovie's? Would it be so horrible, since they already have Lovie here with the new GM, to put Ruskell in for a year, see how they do and if they fail miserably, to jettison the bunch and start fresh without having to pay double salaries? I know it isn't the best position, but as has been said, the Bears painted themselves into a corner...this is the way out. Unless they succeed...then we are all screwed. George Halas doesn't like you.

Official 2011-2012 NCAA Football Thread
QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 11:02 AM) I'm still completely and utterly baffled by LSU's offensive play calling last night. I understand that Alabama has one of the most dominating defenses ever but how do you continually try runs, screens, and options that are getting completely stuffed? Not a single effort to try to open up anything down the field and possibly loosen up the defense. With the athletes LSU has at receiver it was worth taking at least some shots more than 5 f***ing yards past the line of scrimmage, no matter how bad their offense was playing as a whole. Really, what did they even have to lose once it got to a certain point? Also, Jefferson looked absolutely awful every time he tried to run the option last night. Never once did he make a defender commit to him and instead continued to run laterally before making a late pitch and letting his back get crushed behind the line. Jefferson looked absolutely scared from early in the 2nd quarter on. My take is the playcalling was based on pass rush. The Tide were flat out bringing it and the play calling reflected that with screens, runs and options. Of course, Alabama stuffed those too. Then when they took a shot, even at midrange, Jefferson was just off. Not sure Lee woulda brought anything different to the table. LSU didn't show up.

2011-2012 NHL Thread
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 9, 2012 -> 10:41 AM) I thought the cross check on the tying goal was brutal. The Hawks did look pretty soft though last night as well, maybe Carcillo is missed more than we think. Where's Mayers pushing back? Or O'Donnell? Or Montador? That's why these guys were brought, for toughness. I know Mayers wasn't on the ice, but the big guys need to be bigger in the crease on both ends of the ice. That being said, the refs are missing a lot lately.

Congrats to Barry Larkin, Hall of Fame 2012
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 9, 2012 -> 11:13 AM) HOF announcement at 2:00 Central time today. Sounds like Barry Larkin will probably be elected, not sure about anyone else. I'm still surprised that Tim Raines is having so much difficulty getting in. Also, Bagwell got 41.7% of the vote last year. I think his numbers are good enough, but he is a good example of a guy from the steroid era who was never connected or mentioned with them, but his size makes you wonder. Not sure if you read Jayson Stark's column about who he voted for...but it's a good read...especially about Bagwell and Edgar Martinez.

2011-2012 NHL Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2012 -> 11:47 AM) When he is under control he was nice to have on the ice to protect guys. When he does stupid s*** like he did last night, his time out can't last long enough. Mayers can cover that ground now. He's an enforcer that plays under control.

Official 2011-2012 NCAA Football Thread
Let's look back at some of the Illini Coaches: Mike White: Scandal John Mackovic: Left for Texas (smart, but ultimately, bad move) Lou Tepper: Good guy, bad coach, bad recruiter Ron Turner: Good coach, bad recruiter Ron Zook: Bad coach, good recruiter Word on Tim Beckman: Good coach, good recruiter, runs clean program (by NCAA standards, whatever those are). No, he's not a flashy Fedora/Sumlin/Leach hire. But neither was Brady Hoke. Or Jim Tressel. Or Mark Dantonio. Or Bielema. Or Ferentz. Someone's got to take a chance on these coaches. Why not the Illini? What's the worst that can happen? They fire another coach. Big surprise.

Buehrle Signs with Marlins | 4 yrs $58 mil
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 04:21 PM) It's pretty clearly all about getting the 4th year added to the deal. Every media member was saying last night that the first team to give him the 4th year gets him. In my opinion, this has nothing to do with Ozzie being there. I wouldn't say nothing...but it probably wasn't the deciding factor.

Buehrle Signs with Marlins | 4 yrs $58 mil
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 04:03 PM) Christ, they were the highest bidder on Reyes by $15M-$25M from what I've read, $27M to the incredibly scary Heath Bell and now they've guaranteed Buehrle 4 years. Talk about crazy risk. I have a funny feeling we are going to be hearing about a Marlins franchise Kalapse within 5 years. (see what I did there) Loria seems to be pulling a reverse Major League here. I'm going to OVERspend, people still won't move the turnstiles and I'm moving my franchise to a more lucrative location so I can make back some of that phat cash I dished out. The onus is on you South Florida.
