  1. ss... Do you think that you can be religious but not believe in every core belief of that religion? For instance, can you be Catholic, but believe women should be allowed to be priests? Or that divorce is acceptable? Because, just because you believe in a religion doesn't mean you have to side with their beliefs ABSOLUTELY, IMHO.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 10, 2012 -> 01:36 PM) I don't support hypocrisy. I know that doesn't make sense to you at all, but I think that is pretty silly. Then you don't support politics.
  3. I can't believe this argument... "A waffling politician?" *GASP* "A politician using an issue for political gain?" *DOUBLE GASP* Bottom line...as has been said, the United States is about freedom for ALL people. The President of the United States said one of, if not THE last, remaining groups are allowed the same rights as everyone else. Not everyone is going to like his statement, but he represents ALL Americans, INCLUDING liberal democrats, blacks, Jews, the Christian right, the Tea Partiers, atheists, Muslims, Hindus, Mormons, etc...and yes, EVEN the LGBT community. So, I agree with Balta...in this case, I dont' care if he did it for political gain or if it's because Biden said something over the weekend or if he really, truly believes it. It's the first time the Most Powerful Man in the World has actually supported gay rights 100% and for that, I commend him. And honestly, it's rather insulting that you just automatically assume that people on this board can't figure out that this may be a politicized statement. I think most of the people on this board can figure out that there might be more than one result from this action.
  4. QUOTE (knightni @ May 9, 2012 -> 03:12 PM) Stylist Vidal Sassoon Ooo, la la... RIP.
  5. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 9, 2012 -> 04:31 PM) Hey seriously, go f*** yourself. I would be hard-pressed to find anyone more devoted to their wife than I, and I don't need some bulls*** deity to tell me not to cheat on her. I'm pretty devoted to your wife... ZING!!!
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:01 PM) I don't mean the radical talk show hosts like Rush. They don't count. Voters don't care about them. I mean the regular media; newscasters in every town; newspaper/website reporters, etc., who throw him softballs and have the glazed-eye look when they interview him. And national reporters at the press conferences, etc., the ones who daily shape how he's viewed nationally. Let's not start the news media thing again. News media, other than Fox, tend to skew left...it's almost always been that way.
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 9, 2012 -> 04:22 PM) And that's one reason the newspapers are all dying and nobody watches TV news. You know how many Catholics there are on the South Side of Chicago? You know how many religious people want to hear about religion? And the news media treats us all like we are lepers. The news media cannot discuss religion. I'm shocked WGN still airs the midnight mass on Xmas Eve. If religious people want to hear about religion...then they should know where to go to get that information. News media reports news. Not to mention, in places like Chicago...where there are multiple religions co-existing, the local news media can't focus on Catholicism, because they will lose everyone else. And don't start with the priests and molestation. That's newsworthy because it's just plain wrong on multiple levels.
  8. Human brains aren't advanced enough to figure out where all this came from. Whether it's 6000 years ago or 6 billion years ago...and there are two ways of dealing with it...one is faith and one is science. Neither is wrong, per se, but ultimately, one is going to be right. Unfortunately, we aren't there yet.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:59 PM) Come on man. On Soxtalk we call this "Tuesday". Or in the case of Wednesday..."Wednesday."
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:15 PM) about f***ing time. ^^^^^^^ THIS!!!!!!!!!
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:24 PM) TRUE STORY: I know a guy who has a beautiful wife and 4 kids, three of whom they adopted from impoverished countries. He goes to inner city Chicago and hands out 100 dollar bills to homeless people a few times a month. He is coach of his kids' teams and he is a doctor. He believes the Bible and reads the Bible. He drops the word "God" in conversation every third sentence or so. he does this all for God. Is he crazy? Is he a saint? You make the call. He is neither. He is a good person. Whether he does it in God's name or not. Why is this person any different than a non-religious person doing the exact same thing?
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 9, 2012 -> 01:54 PM) The trade to happen. The Sox aren't drawing anyone. They aren't adding payroll. I know...I know...but to say it's an absolutely horrible BASEBALL decision just isn't true. Business wise...this falls into the spend money to make money category, which doesn't always work and is definitely a risk that I won't debate.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 9, 2012 -> 01:52 PM) The only chance that has is if attendance really picks up in the next two months. The only chance what has? The trade? Keeping him for the year?
  14. Here's a scenario...the Sox are still close to first, with no one running away with the division just yet. Kenny pulls a trade for Youk...he stays healthy and gets his OBP up, maybe not to 2010, but is trending upward. The Sox start to fall back of Detroit or whomever is on top...who's to say the Sox can't pull a deadline trade? So, he's traded twice in a year...shoot, Edwin Jackson was traded twice in a day. There is some GM out there that will take Youk for a mid-season rental if it wouldn't work out here. If this trade were to be done soon (if at all, which it probably won't), there's 2+ months to showcase Youk if the Sox can't keep competitive. If they can, but fall short of the playoffs, you don't exercise the option and off he goes.
  15. Maybe someone should introduce legislation banning divorce. Then we'll see where the Christian Right sits. Cuz, ya know, we breeders do marriage SO WELL.... (Full Disclosure: My wife and I are both on our second marriages. Both of our parents are also divorced, my mom married only once, my dad has been married and divorced 3x. My wife's mom is on marriage number 2 and her father is on marriage number 3)
  16. It's not a horrible idea. Youk and Valentine aren't meshing. Thornton is probably the most tradable piece right now. Their salaries mostly match up. Youk is owed $12 million this year and an option of $13 million (which the Sox would probably decline), he may not be hitting now, but he knows how to work a count, which our current players other than Dunn and Konerko don't. He would be an upgrade over Morel RIGHT NOW. And the White Sox are still close enough to be considered in contention. As long as the White Sox check him out and see if he's truly healthy, why the hell not? Now, if the Red Sox won't make the trade, never mind. But, if I'm Kenny...I'm making the call.
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 8, 2012 -> 02:01 PM) <!--quoteo(post=2594246:date=May 8, 2012 -> 01:50 PM:name=Y2HH)-->QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 8, 2012 -> 01:50 PM) <!--quotec--> Special thanks to BS for helping me get this posted without a "link". Props to deGrasse Tyson for this: The ignorant, militant atheists of the world like PZ Meyers are awful. There is an overwhelming amount of dumb and insult in that speech. I loooove Neil deGrasse Tyson. /hawkism
  18. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 8, 2012 -> 01:32 PM) Balta, I dont think about sand as much as you (haha), but I do think about how many circumstances had to happen for me to exist. That a change in a single event at any point in the last billion years could have prevented my existence. Y2hh, The prime mover is an interesting concept, obviously the fact that from something came nothing does lend to the idea that there had to be something that "created" the Universe. That being said, our Universe could be nothing more than a grain of sand in a fish tank in a much larger Universe. I dont really have a good answer for how everything must have started, I just am not convinced that there is an actual god that cares about the comings and goings of the inhabitants of Earth. I believe this is called "The Men In Black Effect" in science circles.
  19. If there ever is a JLA movie...I just want them to throw this in there somewhere: Meanwhile...
  20. George Lindsey...83. RIP Goober Pyle
  21. QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 3, 2012 -> 10:04 AM) That was Bilandic, and it was in the 70's. While there was a big storm in 1999, Daley was prepared and the salt trucks were out, it just happened to fall on New Years weekend, but they still cleaned things up pretty fast. Chicago has sent salt trucks out no matter how much snow falls since the Bilandic incident in the 70's, though. I knew about that one...but that wasn't the one I was referring to...it was the New Years '99 blizzard. Daley was compared to Bilandic that year and ever since then, he had the trucks out and at the ready...whether it snowed hard or hardly at all. And yes, I had a "I Survived the Blizzard of '77" t-shirt. Just like Ray Raynor.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 4, 2012 -> 08:57 AM) Anyone ever get their company to match offers from other employers? Never have...but not a good idea. If you are going to go...go. Otherwise, your current company is going to have a bad impression of you. At least, IMHO.
  23. Familiarity breeds contempt. /all threads regarding how horrible Sox broadcasters are.
  24. Raffi Torres appealing 25 game suspension. What a douche.
  25. Things like this remind me of the Blizzard in the 90's (I think it was the 90's) where Daley was buried (pun intended) for not being prepared. So after that, at any threat of a big storm, the salt trucks are out whether it snows 20" or 1/2". Is it better to be overprepared? Not sure the answer, but I do know hindsight is 20/20. PS...I'm a contractor, so I have to be here. Unfortunately, my client can work from home....
