Will the AL Central survive the next 10 years?
CanOfCorn replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The problem with relocating or expanding to the San Antonio/Austin area comes down to two things...the Astros and the Rangers. A good chunk of the population of Austin are UT grads from one of those two areas...with it skewed more towards the Astros, just because the natives tend to point that direction when it comes to baseball. In fact, Austin is strange about sports. Obviously, they are UT-centric. But after that, for baseball, it's the Astros. For football, it's the Cowboys. For basketball, it's the Spurs. San Antonio wouldn't be that great of a market either because of the HUGE population of military. Those folks are from all over the country and while they might go to games they won't be rooting for the San Antonio/Austin/CenTex Whatevers. -
ESPN to launch Chicago sports site

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 11:39 AM) That and the Bulls. The way ESPN promotes the s*** out of basketball and no coverage of hockey tells you the bias they have toward sports they cover. Mike and Mike will be at the Bass Masters Championships tomorrow. Need I say more. True...but the NHL fell waaaaay down the mountain and is only now fighting its way back. Give it time. The NHL will make a comback enough that ESPN will have to resuscitate NHL 2night...especially since Barry "The Mullet" Melrose is back on ESPN. Him and Bucci were awesome together. -
QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Feb 20, 2009 -> 02:51 PM) I have a stigmatism and never knew that was the reason I sucked. Thanks. It isn't...

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Feb 17, 2009 -> 04:04 PM) Unless they changed the structure or she's in a different program than I think she is, communcations is gen-ed the first two years (filled with discussion sections full of TA's that may/may not speak fluent English) followed by an application for the major courses the last two years. That is no longer the case. The College of Media is now a 4 year College. And my freshman rhetoric TA was from Pakistan. He had been in the country for 3 weeks.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 16, 2009 -> 02:22 PM) Its no biggest surprise that the biggest increases are coming in Philly and Tampa, with the two teams that just played in the World Series. I didn't really get into the exact comparision of how much, and what percentage, but I would guess that the total payroll in MLB this year is down from 2008 levels. And again...Tampa had nowhere to go, but up.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 16, 2009 -> 12:33 PM) IMO Chicago is just as bad. We want all our rookies to come on like Alexei Ramirez did. Sorry to disagree, but Philadelphia booed Santa. They are hateful sports fans. Just ask Donovan McNabb.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 16, 2009 -> 12:45 PM) I caught an article the other day that mentioned Anaheim's payroll dropping by $10 million from last year to this one, so I decided to check and see how much of that was going around baseball right now. I found an article that seven of the top nine payrolls of 2008 are going into 2009 with a lower payroll. I'm still trying to put together the list of who is in which group. This is as near as I can tell. Just doing some quick googling I found 13 teams going lower, 5 about the same, and 12 higher. This article is claiming 15 lower, and 11 higher, with 4 the same. In the end, it is interesting to know that we are definately not alone in our cutting. Does anyone remember the last time that more than half of baseball teams were either cutting, or at best, holding the fort? http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2009...cting-payrolls/ AL Central White Sox-lower Kansas City-Higher Minnesota-Same Cleveland-Higher Detroit-Same AL East NYY-lower Boston-Lower Tampa Bay-Higher Baltimore-Higher Toronto-Lower AL West LAA-Lower Oakland-Higher Seattle-Lower Texas-same NL Central Cubs-HIgher Astros-Higher St Louis-Lower Pittsburgh-same Cincinnati-higher Milwaukee-lower NL East Mets-HIgher Atlanta-lower Washington-lower Florida-same Philidelphia-Higher NL West LAD-lower SD-lower SF-higher Arizona-lower But teams like the Royals and Rays couldn't go much lower. And the Padres were being sold by an owner going through a divorce, so that explains that. But other than that, it is really amazing. I think what would be even more interesting to see is how much higher/lower these teams are going? For instance, are the teams that are cutting decreasing at a significantly higher rate than the adding teams are increasing? Either way, the economy is going to affect all sports for years to come...and if there was ever a time for the owners to push for a salary cap in baseball, now would be the time.

Kenny Williams will take a swing at fathom. Ozzie and Hawk have a post-game match in the octagon with Mariotti and his ego. White Sox win the division on the last day of the season...again. Detroit continues its freefall, but Cleveland, the Twins and the Royals are all significantly better.

Gavin needed a change of scenery, plain and simple. If you don't succeed right away in Philly...those fans will eat you alive. With TCQ, I don't think the D-Backs gave up on him, they just had proven talent ahead of him and with his injury history, they probably figured it was time to move on. That's not saying that they didn't see potential, they just saw him as a 4th or 5th outfielder until one of the other ones moved on.

For your birthday...I hope Southpaw gets a scorching case of Plurpes (that's Plushie Herpes for those playing at home)...and they have to bring youze out of retirement.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 09:36 AM) First rainy day in Chicago in a while, so I'll add this one... People who walk around downtown Chicago (or any other crowded area) with giant golf umbrellas that could protect a small house. They end up clobbering people in the face, they take up three times as much room on the sidewalk as you need, and you look like a pompous ass. Stop it. You should join them. Tell them that space is limited on the sidewalk and hop on under. If they protest, whip out your scissors and cut some off. On a different note...short people with umbrellas. Y'know the people that fit nicely under your umbrella WITH their umbrella and go right for the eyeball.

If you want a tirade...it's GOT to be Samuel L. Jackson. Hands down. I know he's too old to play Kenny, but nobody does a tirade like the "L."

Chuck Taylors. Midnight blue canvas. Black rubber soles and trim. Wore them into the ground and never found them again. *sigh*

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 09:53 AM) Abreu: RISP: .296 .372 .450 (169AB) Runners on: .317 .397 .541 (290 AB) RISP 2 outs: .382 .433 .618 (55AB) Dye: RISP: .269 .304 .429 (156AB) Runners on: .273 .328 .472 (267AB) RISP 2 outs: .210 .269 .306 (62AB) Maybe their total RBI numbers are dependent, but you can clearly see what each player did last year when put in the same situations, Abreu made much more of them. And BTW, they both had about the same number of chances, so Im not sure how much the players in front of them had to do with it. Done aaaaaand...done. /thread.

Who will the Bears draft come april?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 3, 2009 -> 08:25 AM) Angelo has to take the highest talent WR in the first round. We can't ignore this position any longer or continue to try to survive on other retreads. Hester needs to be returned to his primary duties of kick and punt returns. Yes we can...get a WR in free agency. Why? Because Kyle Orton isn't the QB of the future for this team. Meaning...a good QB can make the WRs better. In order: DE, QB, WR, S.
