5/7 The Devil Rays Game Thread

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 06:21 PM) How has Phegley been behind the plate? Pretty solid blocking curve balls in the dirt and wide.0-2 in throwing out base stealers but stolen more on the pitchers. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 05:19 PM) How did Tekotte get caught stealing? Not one pitch Hellickson threw was a strike but got 2 strikes called forcing DeAza to swing at a 3-2 also off the plate outside. He missed and on a close play at 2nd Tekotte was called out though replay shows he barely beat the throw. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 02:56 PM) I'd call it a 2013 thing. For sure. This year so much has gone wrong you start to wonder about stupid stuff like the odd number year jinx, the unlucky #13, and other twilight zone crap, anything other than facing the reality that the Sox suck just to be able to cope with it. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 01:56 PM) The ability to walk and hit for power. He could very easily be a .725-.750 OPS bat off the bench that can play all 3 OF spots. He's been hitting the piss out of the ball in AAA (.938 OPS over previous 30 games). May as well give him a shot. When your name is Blake Aaron Tekotte (BAT) you should be able to hit. -

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 01:58 PM) Are we not allowed to give out multi-year deals? I'd like to lock up one of Morales/Pence/Choo to about a 3 year deal. Signing two (would have to Morales + another) might be a stretch, but we'll have the money. Will be interesting to see how the market goes. I'd like to try our best to keep him in the OF as long as possible. Moving to 1B is always an option, but moving back to OF from 1B is not something you see go well very often. He's bad, but he's not unplayable in the OF at this point. I'd feel more comfortable with him at 1B if we had more certainty with his bat; we don't. You don't want to give up on Dayan, but you don't want a 1B that can't hit. I'd much rather have a bad LF than a bad 1B. I know you're looking at the Sox competing next year and surely I'd love for that to happen but chances are it won't. Just too many holes to fill and question marks. After the trade deadline chances are the only thing the Sox will have going for them is starting pitching. Everything else will a big IF and 3 year deals to 30YO+ players shouldn't be considered unless the Sox pick up some sure things at the trade deadline ,which likely isn't happening. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 01:41 PM) I'm still not sure this isn't too early to give him the callup. I added a 5th reason in my edit before I saw the last 2 posts. Took me a few minutes to finish the research which goes hand in hand with my 4th reason. If the Sox had gone 12-4 instead of 4 -12 Phegley might still be in the minors.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 01:20 PM) If it were a consideration, they wouldn't have waited until July 5 to recall him. They would have done it weeks ago. I'm not saying it was the only reason but most teams do take it into serious consideration to start the arbitration clock later which saves them money. Reasons to bring him up before Super 2 date . 1. Was having a good year. 2. Sox catchers struggling. Reasons not to bring him up before Super 2 1.Sox save money by starting arbitration clock later. 2. Give Flowers more time to improve. 3. Since it's Phegley 1st really good season in the minors give him more time to sustain that success. 4. Wait to see if the Sox could turn around their losing ways. 5 Sox record for what was considered to be a very favorable part of their schedule from 6/14 to end of June , 4-12. The point at which everyone offically knew the Sox had no chance to compete, making call up much more likely.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 05:27 AM) That was never a consideration in him and his call-up And yet it happened after so you never know .

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 11:42 AM) LOL, do i have to put that in green? Joxer is not from the USA and already caught a bit of light hearted flak for putting the day before the month (mostly from me ). I didn't note the sarcasm cuz I was in protective mode for Joxer.

Damn son you didn't give me a chance. Just in case you aren't aware, you usually give the guy who started the last thread if the Sox won a chance to start the new thread. If the Sox lose it's open season. I figured I still had a few hours to do it. But its cool it's yours now. You preserved my 3-0 record and bring home a winner Joxer ! -

Horton to Columbus. Ribeiro to Coyotes, Ference to Oilers, Alfredsson and Weiss to Red Wings. Flippula to Lightning . Clarkson supposedly to Leafs. Any rumors about anyone the Hawks might sign or how much cap space they now have after resigning Handzus and Rosvizal ? -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 11:34 AM) And one thing has definitely been proven THIS year, that's adding the super contracts like Greinke and Hamilton aren't the answer, either. Greinke's entire reputation is based on "potential" and the 2009 season. Other than that, he hasn't been close to an elite pitcher meriting the kind of contract he received. (Not unlike the days of yore when they gave Kevin Brown, Jason Schmidt, Chan Ho Park and Darren Dreifort millions for doing nothing). That's why the upcoming trade deadline is so important to all us fanatics. Everyone knows that signing a big name free agent will not happen. It's counterproductive. If we can all agree that Peavy and Rios have adequate contracts for their skill set/production, what sense does it make to trade them for what would surely be guys who won't live up to their contracts who most likely will be older than either one of them and cost more. It's exactly why I was saying that if it come down to it I'd rather Hahn eat salary to get the player he wants at the deadline rather than pay a much higher price for old, injury prone, over-hyped , free agents who will be paid based upon past performances that never helped you. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 09:47 PM) How good a prospect is Phegley? Is he Sal Perez good? Is he good? From RotoWorld 5/31/2013: A former supplemental-round pick in 2009, Phegley looks ready to make his debut. It’s taken him a little while longer than expected, in part because he has a condition called Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), which prevents normal blood clotting. By all indications, though, Phegley is now in control of his health, which might explain why he’s having his best season. Yahoo Sports 7/2 2013: Since Phegley has almost never posted very good numbers at any level prior this one, the White Sox are playing things slowly. They want him to really prove that his start is no fluke and become fully comfortable with the pitching in Triple-A. He did slow down slightly in June, but far from enough to constitute a slump. He still owns a .317 average, a .962 OPS, and a team-leading 14 home runs. Now 15 HR's.
-
QUOTE (woodstox @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 09:13 PM) Congrats but didn't everyone see this one coming? We all expected Phegley to come up and challenge, right? Yes. Once his Super 2 arbitration status passed which was I believe in mid June. I'm just surprised no one on the board took note of that date passing. There should've been a count down.

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 04:16 PM) Perfect guy might be Jim Gallagher. Lefty bat, can play 1st or OF. He's toiled in our farm system a long time and has always been decent. I say give him a shot, besides he's my AAP. Good man. Gotta stick up for your kid. -

With the Sox out of it and teams starting to make moves., I don't see why they don't DFA Gimenez and bring up Phegley.

I'm now 3-0 in game threads . Guess I'll step up and put it on the line tomorrow but if we win I'm retiring . -
Last walk off homer against Baltimore 1996 by Robin Ventura. Last time a Sox pitcher had 10 or more K's on 7/4 "Lefty" Williams 1916.
