Offseason Part 2 - Lets the Rumors & Action Begin
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
And not just McNeil since McNeil isn't getting paid much anyway . It's a way to get a lot more than McNeil, (prospects, Nimmo, Nido). AT least that's the way I structured my trade proposal with the Mets but everyone just focused on the Cano part of it. It wasn't a trade I expect to happen but it laid out a framework of what could possibly happen should the Sox eat all or a portion of the Cano contract. I didn't even consider Cano as a crucial player in the deal but crucial to making a bigger deal . -

I said the Sox didn't have time to do any deals with the Mets before the lockout and my "think big trade" comment to Jack Parkman was after he agreed with James Fox about not seeing how the Sox and Mets match up. -
Rodon to SF, 2 years, $44 million (opt out after year 1)
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It ended as expected and all GM's know that based on the amount of innings he pitched vs how many innings he had pitched the previous 2 years They also know he was a great pitcher until the end of July and wasn't bad after it. His arm was gassed not injured. The Giants will be smarter than the Sox were about not running up his IP and more than likely also believe his injury risk is less after his work with Katz last year improved his mechanics. The giants also know that having pitched the innings he did last yr that he is likely to last longer this year barring an injury that so many expect here. -

Or the desire to get one of the best pitchers available and win if you are the Giants.Sure it's risky but who left on the FA market or discussed in trades doesn't have red flags ? -

CBT space perhaps about your question . If you remember the Mets said they wanted to get rid of some salary among their position players but guys like McNeil don't move the needle much in that regard. Ideally they would want to move McCann or Cano. The rest of their position players are guys like Marte, Escobar Lindor, Alonso and Canha All them either guys they just got or key pieces to them winning. That leaves the 1 yr left on Nimmo's contract $6M, McNeil's $2.5M , Dom SMith $3M and JD Davis $2.5M. -

That's why I structured the trade with the Mets the way I did. It left plenty of trade capital still on the Sox to trade for a pitcher. Not everything is going to come in one deal. -

I don't think its a rumor it was more like Heyman saying McNeil seemed like a logical fit for us. We've been saying that for a while but McNeil had some run-ins with Lindor about his fielding and positioning. -

That was a name I thought of when I made my Mets trade proposal but I wanted to rid of Keuchel or Kimbrel and get back young talent. But I wanted to keep Lopez around to replace Keuchel. -

Mets signed Starte, Canha and Escobar and pushed themselves up against the CBT in late November. The lockout started Dec. 2nd and just ended and now the Mets want salary relief. There wasn't time between when they made their FA signings and the time the lockout started to do anything with the Mets. -

While VA Fan went a little overboard in his effusive praise of Rodon I will agree with his 1st paragraph . -

Gotta think big trade not small. Mets want salary relief and pitching. We have pitching but not great pitching but if Cano is involved it opens up a lot of things mostly getting a haul of good young players for at least one of our pitchers we want to move Keuchel or Kimbrel. Sox can ask for Nimmo for a yr or McNeil for his 3 yrs left, trade Collins for Nido and get back a top prospect for that extra ugly yr of Cano. Like you said before not likely because no one ever can make up a big trade like that and see it come to fruition but the framework for a trade is there. Maybe the Mets could eat some of that Cano salary for a lesser prospect instead of one of their top ones. Plenty of ways to rework it. -

Yeah I'm just thinking Cano as being a nothing burger with the young talent coming back as keys to that trade along with solving some problem areas without counting on Cano to provide anything . -

It would be a much bigger trade than just those 2. What if the Sox also could get Nimmo for a yr., McNeil for 3yrs. ,Nido for 3 yrs and a top 100 prospect from the Mets along with Cano ? -

McNeil can also play RF and Nimmo has only a yr. left on his contract. Mets need pitching and want salary relief . Cano would be a non factor in the trade since it's only to give the Mets CBT space for this yr and next yr. They'd have to take Keuchel and give up decent talent (Nimmo, McNeil.Nido Mauricio or other prospect) if they are truly serious about shedding salary. Besides Keuchel the Sox can give up Collins and or Engel . Enegl and McNeil both 30 and making just about the same salary. We wouldnt need Engel with McNeil and Nimmo. -

I thought it was a pretty even trade but only if the Mets are serious about shedding some salary and winning now. It does leave plenty of trade capital to trade for pitching. The only problem I see for the Sox with this trade is next yrs payroll. But it brings in a lot of talent. -

Cano wouldn't be the focus of the trade anyway .Getting good talent along with Cano would be. If the Mets are really serious about saving money they have to give up a lot more than McNeil to rid themselves of Cano. -

The Cano salary is huge $48M in salary but 41M for the next 2 yrs against the cap if that translates from the Mets to the Sox They'd have to take one of either Keuchel or Kimbrel ,give up McNeil , 1yr of Nimmo ( FA next yr.) or both and a very good Minor Leaguer of which they plenty . That saves the Mets money this year and a lot next yr. once the Keuchel or Kimbrel contracts end. McNeil is a late bloomer who isn't a FA until 2025 but is already 30. -

But the thing about trading for under performing but usually solid guys who have a bad 1st half is that they usually have good 2nd halves of the season. It's the nature of the game. Good 1st half ,bad 2nd half and vice versa when you are talking about aging or usually solid but unspectacular players. -

Looking more and more like SP help when it comes, will be in a trade. I already solved RF for a yr. backup catcher and upgraded the farm by trading with the Mets without giving up anything but Keuchel and Collins and taking on Cano's contract. Still have good bullet's left for a SP trade. -

Depends on how badly the Mets want to save money. Giving up on 1 yr of Nimmo isn't so bad along with a top prospect when they have lots of them. They want to win now too but need salary room .Saving money this year and next year would be huge for them especially next yr without Cano or the choice of Keuchel and Kimbrel. Plus I like the Nimmo. Nido, Cano and Mauricio all end with O. O what a good trade ! -

I still think the Sox can make a good deal with the Mets. They have 5 or 6 good prospects and need to rid themselves of the Cano contract . Cano contract is $24M but $20,250M adjusted against the Luxury Tax and the same for 2023. Keuchel is $18M Kimbrel $16M Nimmo is $6M and he's a Free Agent Next year McNeil is 30 yrs old $2.5M and isn't a free agent til 2025 Catcher Thomas Nido is 28YO $1M for 2022 not a free agent til 2025 Then the Mets have some really good prospects between AA and AAA Francisco Alvarez C AA, Ronny Mauricio SS AA, Brett Baty 3B AA, Mark Vientos 3B/LF AAA https://www.si.com/mlb/mets/news/these-5-mets-prospects-made-the-athletics-top-100-list The Mets want to shed salary and the Sox have some room but how much they are willing to spend is unknown The Sox could take on Cano's salary while giving up Keuchel or Kimbrel. That saves the Mets between$2-$4M against the CBT for 22. If they give up Nimmo that's another $6M If they Add Nido that's another $1M. Mets could replace Nido with Collins Taking on Nimmo,Cano, and Nido contracts only adds between $9-11M to the Sox payroll for 2022 LH RF is solved for 1 year so then there's the matter of being compensated for that extra year of Cano for 2023. That's where either McNeil or a real nice prospect like Mauricio fits in.McNeil is a nice fit for us but is 30 but saves the Mets another $2.5M this year. But would they give up 2 LH guys who are expected to play key roles ? Doubtful. I'm thinking a top prospect like Mauricio is better payment for that extra year of Cano. So it basically ends of being Keuchel or Kimbrel and Collins for Nimmo, Nido, Cano and Mauricio. Looking at it the Sox get the best player in Nimmo but only for a year, take on a bad contract and get rid of one of our bad contracts. The Sox get a great prospect while the Mets save money this year and next year without the Cano contract, lots of years with Collins and get either their choice of Kimbrel or Keuchel for only 1 yr. -

Now if you want to part with McNeil, Nimmo, McCann and prospect Ronny Mauricio and get back Keuchel, Kimbrel ,Lopez, Collins and whoever else maybe the Sox take on the Cano deal. Then all we need is starting pitching. RF and 2nd base solved along with 2 good lefties. I haven't done enough research to figure out if the Sox could take on the multiyear contracts of McCann and Cano while only giving up Kimbrel and Keuchels salary's so maybe throw JD Davis or Thomas Nido in place of McCann since things will look ugly in 2023 and 2024 with both the McCann and Cano contracts on the books.
