I always like the positive vibes El Rockin. There's a lot to be said in many areas of life where a collective positive thought or excitement, be it through prayer or firewalking crowds or healing the body, does something to help. Even the scientific community isn't totally negative on that theory.

Probably because he's an old catcher and Zavala and McGuire actually are doing a fine job so far. The Sox do need a productive LH bat that's for sure. They need the OBP and the power. We're just not sure he can provide those things as quickly as the Sox need them. If say, in his 1st 10 games back he's not providing much hitting but only getting on base via walking that's not much help especially when Zavala has a hot bat and getting less time or going back to the minors may hurt . Seby has provided .7 fWar already in his short time with the Sox in 2022. Does anyone think Grandal can provide that when he comes back in only 71 PA like Zavala has. We all know Seby is producing way beyond expectations but it does appear something has changed with him. Adding Grandal only adds basically a part time catcher and one more DH into the fold. Who gets benched with less AB's ,our current hottest bats in Sheets or Zavala? Andrew Vaughn ? Eloy ? Abreu has been amazing for 2 months now. Does he sit and get more rest to allow Vaughn more time ? Do the Sox shorten the bench,negate PR ability, and versatility keeping 3 catchers ? Burger looks like the likely candidate to go down but I sure don't want 3 catchers on the 26 if the options situation means one of them has to be released.

If there's one guy out there that fits the Sox it's Ian Happ. No idea what the Cubs would want for him but he's a free agent in 2024. He walks a decent amount plays OF and 2nd and 3rd base in a pinch. One thing he hasn't done in 2022 is play RF but he has played it sparingly in his career. He has lowered his K rate significantly to make better contact. It's hurt his power but he still has 8 HR's. Of course the Sox are already a bit crowded in the OF and they might have to give up Sheets if the Cubs even wanted him and he's meant a lot to Sox wins lately. Basically with Happ you're getting better defense , more speed, more versatility, probably less power than Sheets but a more consistent bat unless whatever changes Sheets has made recently stick. Obviously you're not getting the years from Happ you get from Sheets. Plus Happ is pretty good against LHP too and can steal a base every so often. Of course the Cubs may be more interested in someone like Sosa. You can put Happ out there every day against all pitching. He play almost as much as Abreu , just 14 less PA. He's a switch hitter, better from the left side but above average from the right side too. 2.1 FWAR, 128wRC+

It's really pointless for me to dispute all that you seem to think it would take for 2.5 yrs of Soto but you're giving up 26+ years, 3 of our best position prospect players,all up the middle types and 2 MLB players who have a lot of time and quality players too. That's way too much.

The multi year deal made it even trickier since you could get a decent season from him like this year and still have him get reinjured in the 2nd half and not be worth anything in the 2nd year. But I do think it's strange the we are seeing rumors of the Sox trying to get more starting pitching. If they just had rejected picking up Kimbrel's option then we're not on the hook with Pollock for 2 years or not signed Joe Kelly for 2 years that opened up some money. That might've been enough to resign Rodon since Hahn made it easier to sign Rodon by not extended the QO. Basically everything regarding those 4 players is perhaps up to 50% of the reason why the Sox are mediocre. Maybe they don't get Cueto or Vince Velasquez in that situation or they sign a cheaper, less injured , better relief pitcher than Kelly for only 1 year.

It was always going to take a minor miracle for him to get through a season uninjured especially with his past, which is why so many here were fine with not giving him a QO and not signing him as a free agent. They were always the more likely to be correct. Easy position to take. Expecting failure, like with draft choices, is always more likely to be the correct opinion. I wanted him to get a QO and for him to be resigned and although I have been right so far, especially in regards to the QO , there is still plenty of time for him to wear out or get injured again. If you use fWar ,Rodon's 3.7 is 1.3 higher than Dylan Cease 2.4. According to fWar no other Sox starting pitcher is above a .8 . bWar is much kinder but not for Giolito or Lynn. Kopech and Cueto are much better using bWar whereas Cease is about the same and Rodon is a tiny bit lower.

It's possible but part of being a good GM is recognizing when you can get bargains. If you are transparent as an owner and other teams suspect a sell off your sell off becomes more like a garage sale. People will show up but be prepared to practically give your stuff away, hang onto it or dump it in the trash bin.
