  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 02:47 AM) but I think if you had Viciedo around Guillen, Alexei and Jose, that work ethic question would disappear rather quickly...or he would be shipped out and become a footnote. Not to mention playing for more than $25 a week...
  2. Good stuff. One thing I got out of this is I'm kind of disappointed in the developement of Silverio so far. I really had some high hopes for him. Hopefully it's just been an learning adjustment. Can't say I'm shocked by his age being questioned. Sox dished out some decent quiche for this kid to if I remember correctly. The other: Sorry Lisa.... Not. Even. Close.
  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 02:18 AM) Look, you can throw out all the numbers you want. The eyes don't lie. Jenks: Got people out. Got saves. Got applause. Dotel: Made people sick to their stomachs with his abysmal pitching. Dotel, with all due respect, is a joke. Not as bad as MacDougal or Sisco or the other Royal hack we put in games, of course, but a joke noneheless. Thornton as closer? Maybe (though he'll break out hearts some nights, many more nights than Bobby), but NOT DOTEL. Ya know greg...for as down as I've been on Dotel at times this season...I'm not so sure he wouldn't be a decent closer. Actually he may be better suited for that role. I know he'd come in and immediately walk the first guy or give up a dinger at times this season. But for some reason I think he has more a closer's mentality.
  4. QUOTE (BearSox @ Nov 8, 2008 -> 06:53 PM) Agreed on Ludwick... I'd also avoid Ankiel. I'd also stay away from Lloyn. I'm still trying to figure out how he ever had an ERA under 4. And why would we want Crisp still? I'd much prefer getting Taveras for cheaper. Both are .280 hitters with a .330 OBP and play pretty good D. The difference is that Crisp has more power, but Tavares is the better base stealer. I wouldn't mind Cruz though. Is he a type A or B free agent? Why would you stay away from Lyon? Personally...I think he needs a change of scenery from AZ. But he could be a pretty valuable guy for the pen IMO.
  5. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Nov 8, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) Ozzie Smith and Garry Templeton were traded . Hanley Ramirez was traded. Renteria was pretty highly thought of when Florida traded him. Miguel Cabrera, just last year. was thought of as much,if not more than, Reyes. I know none of those guys were on a team with the Mets revenue but i'm just saying,it's not like great players never get moved. I agree,Reyes probably won't be on the Sox, but it's not an impossiblity. Especially with a team with the picthing mess the Mets are. YOu can't tell me the Mets wouldn't even consider a package of Jenks, Danks, Javy for Reyes. You can't be serious?!? Danks?!?...uhhhhhhh no.
  6. From the Trib...not real encouraging for what it's worth:
  7. QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 8, 2008 -> 06:58 PM) LOL. Yeah... I talked to somebody who said she's a regular at all the games... calls herself "The Flag Lady". Yells to the players and waves her flags all throughout the games. Another good example of why truth is stranger than fiction. LOL...that's her!!! She doesn't even care who she's yellin' for. She'll yell.."base hit (hitter"....strike him out (pitcher) all in the same sequence. I think they ended up telling her to cool it with her flag waving next to the dugout.
  8. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Nov 8, 2008 -> 06:14 PM) Which is exactly why pinning a 19 year old Cuban to start in the majors is irresponsible. Pinning is one thing...and I completely understand that Tony...but if he earns it and proves to be the best option out of ST and in April or May from what we have...even though he might not be completely ready is another thing IMO.
  9. Not much today. High scoring game though, 16-15. Beckham had a so-so game. Hit the ball hard twice. One base hit. I really like how he takes the ball the other way. Tell ya one thing...he really turns a nice DP from second. They turned 2 or 3 really nice one's today started by Wallace. Danks had a bad game today...even though he had a base hit his last AB. Had a ball sail over his head in right late in the game (lost a line drive in the sun) and K'd a few times. Beckham got left on deck with two on in the 9th. I got a chance to have a brief chat with Danks after the game...he seemed pretty down on himself. I asked him to come over to sign a ball...just said "head up dude"...bounce back and looking forward to seeing him up soon. Playing RF at that time of day is absolutely brutal is what I said. He said he didn't even see it. Pretty humble, nice kid really and took the time to have a chat with me which was nice. Dude is big too. I still wonder why Poreda doesn't pitch much. Scenario...did you happen to see the crazy lady waving the flags and flappin' her gums the whole game? Seems she's out at every game I go to.
  10. If the Sox do trade Bobby and get a pretty good return for him (which is the only way I'd do it)...I'd make a serious run at Brandon Lyon. He needs a change of scerery from AZ.
  11. Honestly...what would you expect Kenny to say?..."Jerry Owens is just plain bad...we really want no part of him..." and kill whatever value he may have.
  12. IN. A. HEARTBEAT!!!!! Tell ya what...right now I'm not really looking at building this team to be a serious WS contender the upcoming year...but for the next few years after that with guys like Beckham, The Danks', Q, Lexi and hopefully having this kid in the mix. Will we be competitive next year...sure. But a signing like this could go a long way making the Sox SERIOUS contenders in a few years. Go get him Kenny!
  13. QUOTE (BearSox @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 11:42 AM) Wait, what exactly is Cole doing with his top hand? From what I picked up in the post, it sounded like Cole was really turning his top hand over during his swing. Is he doing something different? Also, I completely advocate upper-cut swings. I'm not saying go crazy with it, but a slight upper-cut could put your bat and the ball on the same level. The only batting coach anyone needs is Ted Williams. Not during his swing...in his stance. Kind of like this pic of old Q from maggsmaggs sig. He's got a very nice swing.
  14. I read that yesterday and just shook my head. What an uninformed putz.
  15. So Minnesota whined enough...BFD. Goody for them! Let's just beat their asses up there then. Do coin flips suck?...ask the '69 Bears and Suns about it. They didn't whine....
  16. QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 08:02 PM) My impression watching him is that he has a bit of an uppercut swing... which may make him prone to strikeouts... but he can hit the ball a long way if he connects. I saw him absolutely cream a couple of pitches. One barely foul that he hit all the way out of the ballpark. One towering shot for a homerun. I walked away with the impression that he definitely has better than average power. Yes he can. Watching his swing did you notice his top hand?...I'd never really seen that before on a hitter...he kind of exaggerated turning it over in his stance. But he really does get the bat through the zone pretty quick.
  17. QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 06:38 PM) What defensive deficiencies? I don't know scenario...the games I've seen him catch this fall he really didn't impress me all that much defensively. So I guess I can't base my decision on him with the 4 games I've seen him. But when I did see him...he had a handful of passed balls, dropped an easy popup and his arm didn't look overly impressive IMO (which I only got to see about 3 times). So again...I've only seen him play a handful of times and not throughout a whole season so I could be way off base. What did you think when you saw him?...
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) Is Renteria a free agent? maybe he's been humbled by his s***tiness in Detroit. How big a kick in the nuts would it be to OC if the Sox signed Renteria and he had a monster year...only to be lauded by Sox fans? Would actually make me chuckle. I'm kind of on the fence with moving Lexi to SS. Seems to me he makes up for his mental lapses at 2B pretty well with his athletic ability. Not sure he could overcome that at SS. I'd actually prefer to leave him at 2nd...but it all depends on the options available.
  19. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 04:23 PM) I'm sure his swing was still choppy... Geez...have a day Gordo! Cole had a dinger too.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 04:27 PM) Daniel Cabrera sucks. He has serious health concerns right now. If anything, he'd be a throw-in instead of the main piece of a trade. What kind of health concerns fathom? Never heard that.....
  21. Why not Teixeira?!? Hear me out. First off I understand it'll be a bidding war for the guy. But I'm hoping Kenny will get into the mix or at least inquire. Why?...I'm not just thinking about next year but 2-3 years down the road. We'll probably have the likes of Beckham and Danks up IMO...and also Poreda. So we could have a potential core roster of: 1B-Teixeira 2B- Beckham SS- Lexi 3B-Fields (if not traded) C-AJ (but not for a whole lot longer) CF- Danks RF- Quentin LF-? SP- MB SP- Danks SP- Floyd SP- Poreda SP- ? Money coming off the books this year and the next few years via trade or end of contract: Thome- 16M Javy- 12M Paulie- 12M JD- 9.5M Cabrera- 10M Toby- 1.75 Crede- 5M Juan- 5M Dotel- 5M Swish- 4M I understand you'll have to pony up dough for Danks and Floyd as well as Bobby at some point. I know last year I was one of the people who wanted to go young and dismantle the aging veterans (and thank god I was wrong...we would have missed out on a fun...but frustrating year). But a young core like that would be pretty enviable and I trust Kenny to fill in the blanks of the question marks. Is it too much money for one guy?...probably. But Teixeira is in his prime of 28 and his put up tremendous numbers consistantly. The question is...how much would KW and Jerry be willing to pony up? I understand a lot of movement would have to take place in order to get this done (ie-trading Paulie and probably JD)...but IMO is a move for the future...albeit and expensive one...but a very productive one.
  22. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 01:46 PM) '09: $6M '10: $9M '11: $10M '12: $14M team option ($2M buyout) '13: $15M team option ($2M buyout) So for a player with a very limited skill set he's pretty expensive. If he's not stroking doubles into the gaps he's not worth much since he can't run, draw walks or hit for big time power and showed last year that he's prone to lapses in concentration and can get lazy in the field. Good Lord...NO THANKS!
  23. Nice pics scenario...thanks for posting.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 09:58 PM) See the following, Doctor. Konerko Quentin Vazquez Just to name the three most susceptible to fighting themselves. Maybe Swisher, too. And one for KW and Ozzie. I think definitely replace Q with Swisher. Hopefully Q's learned his lesson with what happened. Other than that I love the intensity...just control the outbursts that could cause yourself and physical harm (thus hurting the team). But Swish...I think he mentally had his head so far up has arse with a lack of self-confidence...it effected his overall game. Another prime candidate...Logan. If everybody recalls at the beginning of the year he was lights out...had a few bad outings and it was all downhill from there.
  25. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 08:49 AM) I think since KW traded most of his minor league talent for Swish that he wouldnt unload him for crap like that. If he decided to sell on Swish, he should be bringing back a pitcher to replace Javy. I could actually see KW targeting an arm like D Cabrera Exactly. Javy, Swish, Getz or Javy, JD, Nix for Cabera and Roberts. Some combo that includes Javy for Cabrera and Roberts would definitely be on my wish list.
