  1. QUOTE (zenryan @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 12:37 AM) the irony of this post coming from someone who has linked NY Times articles in this thread.... LOL.
  2. I agree (and from what I've seen most do) that since Highway Patrol took over it has been better, and last night probably the best. I think the selective leaking from the Ferguson PD has been again, horrible, and caused more issues. And Nixon has hurt more than he's helped since Thursday. He should have empowered the Highway Patrol chief but has instead cut him at the knees.
  3. Makes sense. HCMA was recruiting him since Middle School. Sucks. Movin on.
  4. A nice article about some Chicago area kids trying to own the right to define their neighborhood: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/0...ontent=20140802 I hope they can overcome the obstacles we've laid in their paths. They deserve it.
  5. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 07:43 PM) Exactly. It seems to me that the police, media, everyone should have been jumping to the fact that none of the information was confirmed, etc. Instead it was encouraged and created a gigantic fire. Note: Who knows, maybe that happens anyway, and I'm not blaming the media for what ultimately happened and the rioting as the rioting was a problem of the people and the police had initial major issues in how they handled the response to what happened. Again though, so many areas to point fingers at and so many places where things were poorly handled. Instead they rolled up a tank and refused to answer questions, meanwhile there was a dead body in the street whom witnesses say was shot dead by a policeman. Wouldn't really say that's the media's fault. The media was barely on that story until the sunday night riots a day later. Unless you had friends in missouri no way you caught it then.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 04:22 PM) You can easily see it with your own eyes if you turn on the TV and watch live feeds. The police are trying to balance between allowing a protest and keeping people safe. A shooting happens literally a block away from the crowd so the police try to move the people out of the area to stop any further violence. The very notion that the Police are trying to tell them to do anything, even if its for their own safety is all of a sudden the craziest thing ever. If someone at that moment threw another molotov cocktail and it happened to injure those peaceful protesters or media the Police wouldnt be doing enough. I'd love to hear options on how to better ensure the safety of innocent people vs the violence that can and will occur every night. It a miracle it hasnt been worse. But, I don't know if this is ss's point, but it also could have been a lot better had the response not been so heavy handed and tonedeaf to the original peaceful protests. There have been too many cooks in the kitchen, they set up Johnson, well received, they immediately cut his legs out from under him.
  7. QUOTE (Tmar @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) I hope the next time an innocent cop gets killed by a criminal white people protest and riot The white people will wait for a sporting event, something that actually matters, right?
  8. I think people should realize the schizm from last week to this week. Since the change from County to City police last Thursday, they have done a better job of separating treatment between protestors and rioters (see: antonio french's twitter). Most of SS examples are from last week. While there have been exceptions this week, it's been largely better.
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 03:58 PM) I don't disagree that Manziel maybe overrated, but preseason scores? Really? Should be noted Manziel has often played on Cleveland 2nd team offense, considering how bad their starting WRs are, can't imagine it gets better.
  10. It's funny, for most in-state recruits, you think you have a good shot. But the past few years, very few Columbia, Mo (where mizzou is located) have committed to the school. I can't really blame the kids. There is a "nice to stay near home where my parents can see me" and there is "literally staying at home". He'd be great to get but I understand if he doesn't go Mizzou.
  11. We did our research: In 129 years since police and fire commissions were created in the state of Wisconsin, we could not find a single ruling by a police department, an inquest or a police commission that a shooting was unjustified. 12. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 11:48 PM) You can be the best cop in the world. You can't change someone's mind if they have already decided they aren't being arrested today. He's not arrested he's dead.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 12:37 AM) Wait,I thought it was like ten minutes later, not four hours The initial report was 4 hours earlier, now I don't really see any time date info.
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 11:31 PM) The forensics say nothing about the likelihood of Brown's movements. they also don't show any signs of a previous struggle. My only thoughts are this probably all happened very fast. For some reason Brown turned around in a way that witnesses thought it was by force. Something that traumatizing is hard for the brain to process. He ran, may have been shot at from behind, turned around, started running, shot. I find it hard to believe he "made an obscene gesture" or whatever the wording was, then started bullrushing. And kept going. And at all points, where does the hands up come from? That was an added detail, that was from the first witnesses around the scene on twitter on saturday the 9th. I was following when it happened. Everyone said he was executed. There's more there.
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 11:23 PM) I get what you're saying, but how else would you suggest he handle the situation if Brown actually did attempt to disarm him? I think anyone that tries to disarm a police officer, or try and shoot anyone, may be brought down with force to protect others. But that's kind of the point. I can't remember the last time one of these happened where the unarmed person didn't either have some sort of object that police believed was a gun, or tried to grab the gun. I'm sure in some cases it happened, but every single time? It's a very intoxicating turn of events from someone trying to prove their innocence. Moreso when the other person can't off their own intent. I have to say, that friends account sounds rather incredible. More rabid animal than teenager. Almost every action paints the officer in the best light (he not only charges, but keeps charging even after shot, so intent on ... bull rushing the officer) But how good of a cop could you be if a jaywalking arrest turns into a dead kid? Surely there was some slip up along the way even if the kid was aggressively behaving.
  16. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 12:09 AM) If he tried to disarm an officer, his side of the story doesn't really make a difference. Right, phew. Glad the officer cleared that up for us.
  17. For wife's bday thinking of heading to Tulum Mexico. Great beaches, Mayan ruins. But there is no electric grid, most only offer electricity from 7pm-midnight. Anyone ever been in a place like this? Is the breeze enough to be comfortable at night?
  18. Yes, we have a lot of retrospectives from this cop apparently. What's Mike Brown's side of the story?
  19. I mean, that's like, the least implausible part of the story. They may have wanted the cigars to transform them into something else.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 09:26 PM) A BIG part of that was the team pushing them due to being in the playoff hunt, it should be noted. Had the team been 15 games back and the staff been given the choice of how many innings to work them for solely based on developing them, different choices might have been made. Right, I'm just remembering Sale's year in relation to Strasburg, where Strasburg was sitting. If we do get in the playoff hunt, perhaps they move forward. Only way to stretch out the arm is to pitch I imagine.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 10:03 PM) I said this earlier, but if I had to guess at next year, I would guess something like 175 to 180 IP. That'd be great, I was assuming 160. At 6 IP per start that would be about 26 starts.
  22. What do we believe Rodon's innings limit will be next year? What do you think he'll end up at this year? Sorry for all the questions.
  23. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 09:42 PM) He pitched nicely in 2013 after he signed. Didn't dominate, but they were what you'd consider encouraging numbers. His problem in 2014 is that he has become insanely hittable. His K/9 and BB/9 numbers aren't terrible, he is just allowing asstons of hits and homeruns. Interesting enough, since his promotion in AA this year, his rates have all gone the opposite way. He is now striking out less, walking more, but reducing his H/9, and cut his HR/9 down substantially, which has resulted in his ERA being dropped to normal figures. He just has to put that all together now. Thanks. So doesn't sound like he's out of the league, just more development than we've come to expect from a top college pitcher.
  24. Did Appel do well to start off last year?
