QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 08:09 PM) Also, I don't think you are surrendering when you're running away. Good God. Please read anything in this same thread that clarifies the very simple points being made. This does not require repeating over and over.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 07:15 PM) Which is exactly what we are being asked to do for part of the story. Ironic isn't it? As has been stated multiple times in this thread, it is almost certain this kid was resisting arrest, which is obviously wrong, but the penalty is not death. And as we saw in Times Square shooting by policeman, the standards for shooting after a fleeing, unarmed suspect should be very high. Two things that can be true: - Mike Brown should have been arrested that day - Mike Brown should not have been shot dead by an arresting officer

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 07:33 PM) I agree that is likely the case, but I will wait for the forensics to confirm before declaring that I believe charges should be filed. Police said on Sunday they wouldn't release autopsy info (except they might release toxicology reports, surprise), so I'm not sure we'll know this answer unless charges are filed against policeman.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 07:45 PM) which is it? he was shot in the back running or shot in the chest while his hands were in the air surrendering? According to witnesses, both. He was shot running, and turned around with his hands up. He was shot multiple times.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 06:12 PM) So does preaching hate for the police. You are pretty well seeing the results of it. Yes, people were outraged, not because in the middle of the day people saw a police officer shoot a kid dead with his hands raised, it was because of people "preaching police hate" for no reason!

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 05:25 PM) It works exactly like that, and it creates situations exactly like this. Hate and fear is a two way street, and has real world consequences. You can't stoke hate and fear on one sides, and not expect it to have results and externalities. Well, unfortunately, police brutality in communities has real world consequences, and those consequences were not reaped from those asking to end it. It's from those who perform it, and from those who do not punish it. Most politicians are not corrupt, but it doesn't mean that a minority of them engaging in corruption is not an issue. It is, and it erodes public trust. That isn't the media/or watchdogs fault. It is the fault of the politicians if they do not try to self regulate.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 05:16 PM) So the idea is that it is OK for the stereotype of an entire group to take place because of the actions of a few in this situation? Sorry, but your efforts to try and equate "black people" with the "race" of police officers will not be entertained. Much like a bad customer service rep can do more negative harm to a company than 100 good cs reps, such is life for police. "Well, you can't paint all of comcast customer service in a bad light!" It doesn't work like that.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 05:12 PM) Right now we have the cops saying that he strong armed the convenient store(which looks to be true), assaulted a cop and tried to steal his gun. And we have Brown's friends saying that he surrendered right away. My point is that we still don't have all the details but a lot of people seem to just want to join the "f*** the police" side of things. Michael Brown doesn't have to be a saint for there still to have been gross incompetence. Officers should not be killing unarmed suspects, but even then after that, the response from the police this week has been a joke, and worthy of all the criticism they received. Unremarkably, a de-escalation did not lead to chaos taking over, but receding.

The majority of police are good people, unfortunatley the police have done historically a pretty terrible job of actually punishing and removing bad policeman from their ranks and protecting their own. If police brutality is used as propoganda perhaps the police should work harder to remove themselves from that equation. Again, Chicago police had an organized torture ring for almost a decade which put an unbelievable amount of innocent people in jail. He will continue to get paid for next decade by taxpayers he tortured.
  10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 04:05 AM) Ready to get on the Decamil is a f***ing joke bandwagon yet? I'm fully on board. I feel like he is the Martz of ST. Puts in an overly complicated system in place despite not having the players to accomplish it, system fails, he'll blame players. Finds job elsewhere.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 03:47 PM) Wait a second. I thought he was just an innocent kid minding his business waiting for college to start? (And stop, I'm not justifying shooting an unarmed person with their hands up. If that's what actually happened, the cop should be punished. Just funny how these details are conveniently left out) Probably because if you were alive in high school you probably knew someone that stole cigars from convenience stores and don't believe they should be shot 9 times.
  12. So that was mostly boring. One guy was chanting the texas a&m chants by himself on camera for like 4 minutes. Not compelling TV.
  13. I don't want the pitchforks brought out for Hawk. I want him to recognize it was a stupid thing to say and not say it again. That's it. If he's suspended a game I'd like that because I've enjoyed every game he's not been on this year more than when he's been on, but I don't think it is vital. I'm glad he's being shamed for it, and I'm glad it once again brings out those who feel so oppressed that they can't say whatever they'd like...on tv...without consequence.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) I am sad and disappointed that "Let's Be Cops" is getting such awful reviews. I like both of them but I knew it would be terrible when all of the previews were just them yelling things out loud.

QUOTE (The Wiz @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 04:28 PM) I don't plan on posting in this forum as I hate anything politics involved, but I saw this and just had to say I completely disagree with the sentiment and think you are wrong. The kids in those neighborhoods are raised to hate police, police brutality or not. People are strong armed by local gangs to not talk to the police or act as witnesses to crimes. I think you are really undervaluing how much power and influence gangs have on these neighborhoods. There are still plenty of professional athletes who came from areas with strong gang influences who are funneling money back to the gangs not because they want to but because they have to for the safety of them and their families. To say that police brutality (which is becoming fewer and fewer thanks to dash cams and such) is a major problem with crime, I'd say you are either naive or naturally have a bias against the police. But I agree, police brutality is wrong. But I hate when people use the actions of a few police officers to represent the whole group. Its no better than people who use the actions of a few black people to judge the whole group. Do you think they are raised to hate the police because of no reason, or for example, they grew up in the neighborhoods where policed tortured suspects to gain false confessions. There is a strong sentiment in this forum that police officers can be terrible at their jobs and terrorize people because they put their life at risk. I disagree.
  16. QUOTE (shysocks @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 09:10 PM) God was that great. It really was delightful and we'll have something like it before too long. At the same time, you should read the article. It was super, super dumb. I may have never read the article either.
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 09:16 PM) Golf is getting hit with the same criticisms. Baseball and golf are not going to die. And we shouldn't be making huge changes to games that have been around for 2+ centuries so that the latest generation of teenagers can get their fat asses off the couch. You'd think baseball was like, the most athletically demanding from the way you talk.
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 09:06 PM) Are the Hawks going to get rid of the scantily clad Ice Crew? Doesn't seem they hire any average looking women for that job. How wrong. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-dad...-202440158.html It's amazing...it's like people don't like being treated like s*** by teams they are fans of.
  19. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 09:55 PM) Didn't read the article, but what he said is absolutely wrong. You can dismiss it as being OMG YOU ARE SO SENSITIVE but he talked down to a portion of the Sox fanbase. It's just pointless and stupid. This is what I was trying to get at. When baseball is already hurting, why risk stuff like this. Every other sport I follow is trying to increase it's reach with women because women like sports. Glad to know baseball is healthy enough that it can use them as fodder for old man jokes.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 09:50 PM) Yet the NFL has fans who applaud guys who beat their fiances unconscious, call each other b****es and the n word. So no, that clip isn't going to confirm anything. Thank God baseball is free and clear of player misbehavior.
  21. Nor do I think it's a lack of political correctness, but this clip is going to make the rounds and it's going to confirm a lot of people's beliefs that this is a game for old men.
  22. bmags replied to Brian's topic in The Filibuster
Well frankly military purchases were some of the few stimulus items that were uncontroversial.
  23. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 09:36 PM) Blah. Live a little. Don't be so incredibly oversensitive. It takes all the fun out of life. I'm not a broadcaster. Talk to people about baseball now, everyone thinks it's a boring old mans game. Stuff like this just confirms it.
  24. bmags replied to Brian's topic in The Filibuster
How have purchases like that sustained itself among all the other cuts of the past 3 years.
  25. I thought that was crap too and was glad I didn't see it. Obviously you know where that language comes from when talking to an older man but it's sentiment is so outdated and dumb.
