    Best of Chicago

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 06:03 PM) I say the next Soxtalk drinking outing needs to be in Logan. Perhaps Revolution? Sounds good. I'd also like some more recommendations in this thread
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 06:24 PM) I'm done with this conversation, you're not going to see what everyone else here sees. Incorrect.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 31, 2011 -> 05:05 PM) Ferris Bueller had a better chance of doing all of that stuff in one day off of school than Bruce Wayne has of doing 1/10th of what we are asked to believe he's done. But, yes, the humanity/mortality/lack of actually superpower continues to be a difference-maker for Batman, and one of the things that has allowed the character to succeed for 70 years. I get your point, I just wish there was consistency in the superpowers of superman

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 31, 2011 -> 05:30 PM) Obviously all that is needed to shake things up in the next movie is some RED KRYPTONITE, because you never know how that stuff will effect Superman. And Superman throwing stuff into space to save the planet doesn't come close to the predictable and over-done broody-moody-scowly-growly Batman thing. In the end, Batman's mortality does tend to make those films at least seem like there is an element of suspense and maybe he won't win the day. Comic heroes just aren't particularly deep characters. I still end up seeing most of the films anyway eventually. Naw, the throwing stuff into space is way worse. Also how they just sort of make up powers for superman. Ohhh and there's a lazer coming out of his chest.
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 31, 2011 -> 04:14 PM) How bad were the other black mayoral candidates, that they chose Braun to represent the African-American community? Whatever votes she gained by being the sole black candidate, I'm sure she lost just as many for being an awful choice The thing you have to remember is fundraising plays a huge role. Being a former senator, she already had a fundraising apparatus, name recognition, and donors at the helm. And they are going against one of the greatest fundraisers in the country (emanuel). People probably put too much emphasis on that (Coakley in mass. largely got thru the primary b/c of that as well), but it matters a lot.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 31, 2011 -> 03:44 PM) I have sort of the same feeling and I don't think it's about the indestructibility. I think you could basically say the same thing about almost any superhero film. Regardless of whether the character is indestructible or not, you know going into a hero click that the marquee characters are going to survive and triumph regardless what stumbling blocks are encountered during the film. Fans of the hero genre accept that and others see something else. For me the problem is sticking with a believable portrayal of a character that is so cut-and-dried "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" in an era that is very far removed from the 4-color one-dimensional world Siegel and Shuster created in 1938. But, if a woman dies in batman, she dies, with superman he can turn back time with his flying! That and all problems are solved by him throwing whatever into space.
  10. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 31, 2011 -> 04:02 PM) Watkins asked Carol what has she been doing for the city for the last 15 years. A real good question. Carol's response, "you were high on coke". she never answered the question. Carol does not even realize what a fool she looked like as that is what makes Watkins story a good one. Watkins has been clean and sober for 35 years and has a very compelling story, Carol, not so much To quote it even worse and more accurately Mosely Braun said "You don't remember what I've been doing the last 15 years cause you were high on CRACK"
  11. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 31, 2011 -> 03:47 PM) Carol put on quite the show of ignorance yesterday.....anyone that backed her needs to really reevaluate their ability to make descicions. The thought that Rahm not in the race and her actually having a backing is scary what could have happened. That was absolutely disgusting. I had my mouth open in awe.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 30, 2011 -> 06:10 AM) Absolutely. It will be interesting to see whether the American public chooses to demand increased safety and health guildelines, or if everyone continues to look the other way while this stuff is swept under the rug. Judging by the Cutler episode I'm guessing no.

    Best of Chicago

It's winter, yes, but that's soon to end. When the weather warms I'll be sure to venture out farther outside my comfy 'hood and see all the little corner pubs I've wanted to. So I thought I'd share some of the best places I've been in the past year. And I'd like to hear yours. We know about kumas, hot dougs, etc. I'm also bored. Here are my own categories, feel free to invent yours: Best (relatively) New Bar (Wicker Park): Big Star Formerly the Pontiac, they created one of the most pleasant atmospheres around. It gets crowded, so I'd suggest getting here early and it's especially a great place in summer. They have excellent $2 tacos, cheap beer, and daily whiskey specials. Old time country plays in a real bare bones environment. It's a really relaxing place. It's only identity is that it's enjoyable. Best Tuesday Night Drink Special: Estelle's $2-$3 For a really wide array of drafts highlighting the best of some of the better known brews (bell's, great lakes, rogue, revolution) and some surprises. Get there early before the college kids take over. Great juke box. Really meh food. Best Indian Restaurant Not on Devon: Marigold Great cocktails and fantastic food, located in uptown it's still a bit farther north than is convenient for me. But I had some really great Murg Makhni, but just a warning, the vegetarian dishes are inexplicably hit or miss for an Indian restaurant. Friendliest Service: Tied between Whirlaway Lounge and Cafe Bella Both located on fullerton in Logan Square, both just blow me away with how kind they are. Whirlaway's owner and main bartender Maria will know you by name and for life if you go during a non busy time for an hour or so. They take care of the whole bar quickly, have a cult following and it's just a great night out. Cafe Bella serves great sandwiches and coffee, and I couldn't be more cliche but you feel like you are guests in their home. They take care of you. Best Chilaquiles: Wolf's Den The place is hilarious. Formerly the here we go cafe, it looks as if they gave no thought to the atmosphere and design of the restaurant. They are often closed without warning. But damn they make some f'n good chilaquiles. Runner Up: Flow on Chicago Ave. in Ukrainian village. Best tamale guy: Blue Cooler More contentious than it should be, blue cooler is always where I need him. Best Corner Pub: Archies Located in Humboldt Park, one of my favorite bars in Chicago. Very laid back, basically looks like a basement they made a bar out of. Great Juke Box, Hammison's drink special (that's a Hamm's and a Jamison shot for $5), darts, board games. Blue cooler always make my night here. Fair warning: it can be pretty hip some nights. Best Restaurant in Logan Square: Longman and Eagle boring, but it's true. Fantastic food you can live with price-wise. Best Bar in North Center: http://www.yelp.com/biz/goldies-bar-chicago Goldie's $1 PBR every night. Enough said, for me, but also pool and darts. Best Bar in Lincoln Park: Delilah's Great music, affordable, one of the few LP bars i can stand beside Gallway Bay. Oh also Lady Gaga went here. That's my list, I'll think of more. Most of all, think of the term "best" as places that left their mark on me. I didn't go to 100 places in each neighborhood. But these places I all heartily endorse.
  14. Why are people who all understand what the cloud is arguing about it for so long. We should be all just yelling at microsoft.
  15. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 11:32 PM) that's a shame to hear. I went to Hopleaf years ago and at the time it was easily the best in Chicago for Belgian taps and bottles - better Evan than Map Room. I didn't care much for the Yuppie-Cubbie clientele, but it sure didnt hurt the beer any. Has Clark St. Ale House dropped sufficiently in quality so as not to make that list? they never had the bottle selection of some places, but thy always represented the best of Midwest well on tap and the location is great - especially back when my buddy Steve had the Mango restaurant open just a couple doors away. I had my first Three Floyd's Alpha King at the Ale House so it will always have a soft spot in my heart. Sorry, I had a knee jerk reaction to Sheffields being on there. But I think what this list has wrong is rather than sheer quantity, which all have, it's does the make it easy for the customer to hone in and try new things. One thing map room does well is change their menu often and keep it manageable.
  16. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 06:28 PM) That's really all it is. I hate the fact that they insist it's for "safety". I've seen a number of people slam on their brakes the second the light turns yellow so they don't get caught by the cameras. Just a counter point, the lights in my old town that put in cameras saw a drastic decrease in accidents.
  17. Just ordered the following wines from Wine Insiders; 2005 Geja’s Big Bold Red Black Fox Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Bayshore Pinot Grigio 2008 Pinnacle Cabernet Sauvignon Monarch Glen Merlot 2008 Tinto Figuero I'll report back.
  18. Actually that list makes it look like they just went off straight quantity of something (taps/amt. of beer offered at one time). Which is stupid.
  19. map rooms the only one worth going to. Sheffield's is awful.
  20. It still confuses me. I've been trying to replace my tubes for a while now.
  21. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 09:35 PM) For example, there are Chicago development rules, such as you must have a minimum 1:1 ratio of parking spots to units on all new development. In Alderman Schulter's ward you need to have a 2:1 ratio. :rolleyes (not at you)
  22. I think it had it's purpose. You had to create a phrase that salesforce and dropbox could have used to explain to people what is capable now.
  23. http://www.chicagoforrahm.com/issues/transportation This is pretty spot on, I'll say that. And if the storefront owners are just going to hold out, than loosening building restrictions and bad parking regulations can allow for more new retail development.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 06:27 PM) Link that's a good way of putting it.
