QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 15, 2008 -> 07:01 PM) Obama cares more then anyone else, ever, running for political office. I'm glad. well no, but considering the incredible organization and coordinating ability with volunteers that Obama's campaign has, I think it's great they are using that to help the people of Illinois and Iowa. This whole thing is a mess, I pray for those people.

I don't really blame the jury in this case.

also an email that was sent out to myBo users: We need your help right now. In Quincy, Illinois and surrounding areas, the river is expected to crest on Monday or Tuesday. There are emergency sandbagging operations going on right now and public officials have put out a call for all available volunteers. Your help is desperately needed. The widespread flooding in the Midwest has affected millions of people. We have an opportunity to use our grassroots movement to make a real impact at a time of urgent need. If you can assist, please travel to one of these areas this weekend:

I didn't want to go, but I did, and I didn't want to hate it, but it was hard not to laugh at the terrible acting from actors I like and some generally just funny death scenes.

How could you boo scott podsednik?

The happening was the most irredeemably awful movie I've seen in years.

I guess I'll jump in the argument. There wouldn't be a big problem with fox if it was just conservative. The problem is they aren't putting substantive conservatives on their shows, we aren't getting a debate with William F. Buckleys, we are getting Rush Lumbaugh's ilk. They have news personality after news personality, very few news magazine shows that are informative. They are a tabloid. Their problem is the same problem as the Chicago Sun-Times. The problem with fox being so highly rated has nothing to do with their politics, rather their dragging of journalism into the trough and being successful by being so shallow. That is the problem w/ ze Fox news.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 09:32 PM) you are excused. and I could argue the same about the swift boat ads. character is important as it often shapes policy. You're right, I shouldn't have said character is off-limits, but I do believe trivializing a man's war record when the other opponent did not even participate in the war was, hopefully in this new election, reprehensible. Obama has shown an ability to control his entire base, but I have seen comments poking fun at McCain's war record, I hope they stop.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 10:22 PM) Funny thing is McCain totally defended Kerry during the swift boat thing. Now look at what Kerry is doing. Maybe those guys that served with Kerry were right, he's a total weasel and will turn on anyone at any time for personal gain. excuse me, but there is a huge difference from defending attacks against a man's service and character, and attacking a politician's policies in how he will deal with our country at war. Huge differences, in my opinion. As much as McCain is acting as if this is a misspeak, this is his policy. He wants us in Iraq for a long time, as we've been in Japan. He cares more about lowering casualties than withdrawing troops, he'll commit whatever is necessary to accomplish that. Yet, he's trying to act like this isn't his policy here.

"McCain was also caught in a flat-out lie about Obama's climate change plan: "Sen. Obama has no record of being involved in this issue that I know of. I will stick by my record and my commitment of many years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions." Uh, minor problem here, John McCain. You co-sponsored the Obama-McCain Climate Change Reduction Act with Obama and yes, Lieberman. http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2007/1/12/17937/0703" user comment from tpm.com

Typically, Mayors of big cities aren't dealing with 'puppet' legislatures, it's just that city councils aren't designed to be that powerful compared to the mayor. The mayor is the only one with real name recognition in the city and is seen as the head of the city by the voters and that's how it is mostly run. With some states, the governor also has a state legislature that mostly serve to the governor. Georgia is an example of this, one of the reason why Carter's one term was even less impressive, he never really had to deal with a legislature before. Illinois, however, has a highly professionalized state legislature. They get paid well, get staff and we don't have term limits. This has, imo, lead to a successful legislature, and has been a benefit to us in a situation like this with a corrupt governor. 'Puppet' legislature is a misleading term, the way you use it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 06:45 PM) Its totally personal. It has nothing to do with party. Good?

It partly shows just how in shambles the Republicans are, too, then. They weren't going to win vs. Obama, but even so getting Alan Keyes I believe hurt their party. Then, my rubber duckie could have beat Blago and they throw Judy Baar Topinka. I mean, Oberweis and Topinka...give me a break. Why not Joe Birkett, he lost to a strong candidate in Lisa Madigan, but he's got a pretty clean record and could've played the anti-corruption card. But instead we got Blago. Good lord. PLEASE IMPEACH HIM, recall him, anything.

QUOTE (BobDylan @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 08:19 PM) Yeah, where can I find a powerbook G4 today? Ebay? You want to know who is ahead? Asus. Check out their EEE. Check out what has followed behind it from other companies. Apple is years away from that. ...But I can buy a phone and touch it and watch it respond! Outdated doesn't mean ahead. they have 13" macbooks.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/c...0,2250083.story SPRINGFIELD—House Speaker Michael Madigan is circulating a memo to legislative candidates spelling out how they can call for impeachment hearings for Gov. Rod Blagojevich—with talking points that compare corruption under the governor to a tumor that must be removed. The 14-page rundown of Blagojevich's alleged "misdeeds and malfeasance" is sure to deepen the feud between the two Democrats. "One thing we learned from the [imprisoned former Republican Gov.] George Ryan case is that we should excise a tumor when it is first discovered; not leave it in the body to continue to spread and do further harm," the memo reads. Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said the Democratic Party of Illinois, which Madigan chairs, sent the memo to a "bunch of candidates" requesting more information about impeachment. The memo drew a terse statement from Senate President Emil Jones Jr. "I think it's wrong for the Democratic Speaker and Democratic Party Chairman to promote the impeachment of a Democratic Governor," Jones said. "Impeachment is unwarranted in my opinion, and should not be used as a political tool. "It is a serious state action that should not be used to divert attention from the issues at hand, which are the operating budget and passing a capital bill." Get 'em Mads

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 12:31 AM) Well, it depends on how you count "earmarks". If you use the most generous definition possible, where it's any time Congress directs money to anything, you can get a higher number. But the trap is...a lot of that money is actually pretty useful, and ranting and raving against the evils of earmarks can get you in to trouble. For example, McCain's campaign a month ago or so started talking about how they were going to help balance the budget by getting rid of like $60 billion in earmarks a year. But then, people started pointing out the things that included...like, "Senator McCain, ever dollar of aid given to Israel by the U.S. fits that definition. Are you in favor of the U.S. eliminating aid to Israel"? ETc. The pattern, if you're looking for one, also does show up, in that if you're looking at the per capita earmarks, you have to look at which state has the longest serving senators who know how to game the budget. Alaska is #1 in earmarks per person, because of Senator Tubes and Senator "No I have no idea who put that earmark in there" Young. West Virginia is #3 thanks to Robert Byrd. Etc. Don Young is the states Rep. not Sen. But coconut road was quite a fiasco no?

QUOTE (BobDylan @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 05:30 PM) Yeah, they were real quick to get that slim notebook out. Where's the UMPC? How about a 12 inch laptop I can carry around? Apple ain't that far ahead... if at all. And they're just now going to Intel? Their designs may look great, but they're hired designers from Sony Vaio. They may have made a slick product or two, but the iPod and iPhone aren't enough for me to hail Apple as God. I still can't go to a local retailer and buy their software. That's being ahead of the "imitators"? Give me a break. I've owned a mac 12" laptop for 4 years
