I'd be really thrilled with Mize, just don't think he's there. McClanahan is nice, just don't really want a TJ guy. There are also just a lot of high school pitchers that are quality, and not so many position players. So it's a question of getting the top of a pretty stocked class, or getting the top of a weak class.

Are any other Bears fans sorta unexcited about this draft? Like there's one scenario where it goes great (Chubb), then probably good (Fitzpatrick), then okay, I guess (Nelson), then well if we have to (Smith, Edmunds). Add to that the Bears are once again not the "fulcrum" pick. Though there are teams that are keen to trade up, the bears are not the team ahead of teams that people worry about. Boring.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 09:23 AM) I don't know. I think this week is worse than last week. Last week was March. And it won't eliminate all bad weather, it's just intended to reduce the amount of times truly terrible weather occurs on home ball games.
-
I've always wanted to run the analysis of suspended games due to weather by week in april. I heavily believe the first week would be the worst, and it having significant dips each week. Meaning if sox always had home opener in second week of april it would be a big enough improvement to enact that policy.

And their fourth quarter lineup... I mean seriously. How do teams that are trying lose to that? Wouldn’t be surprised if Lauri is shut down. This is a joke. -
Is there a financial reason we didn’t break camp with a Ross/Rondon/Cedeno?

Really disappointed in Infante and especially Minaya whom I thought would take a step forward. Stuff looks real off.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 01:12 PM) It was touched on in the mock draft snippet, but Bohm truly fits the mold of the organization's draft trends of late. Advanced college hitter with great plate discipline and power. Bohm is trending up in all aspects and signs point to top half of the 1st round. I think the only question is the ability to stick at 3B. If he could be at least average there, I would be on board. Does Wichita State have trackman set-up? Then the stars would really align.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 30, 2018 -> 08:50 PM) Only the Bulls.. Only hope now is Mavs somehow beat Wolves (highly unlikely) to have a chance of at least the #5 spot. Otherwise, best I see them doing is #6 (barring lottery odds of course). All things considered, I'd be pretty happy with 6. I think we'll get an exciting player there. -
I think this stuff makes baseball fun, and its not like anyone threw a cleat up or hit somebody in the head. Applause all around. Though whistling is annoying so Boston should try maybe clapping like a normal person.

QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 11:10 AM) It seems like in today's game, if you're a hitting catcher you become a first baseman. Maybe that's deflating the price of a catcher? Certainly seems so. For example, do you think Gary Sanchez hits free agency as a catcher still?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 10:50 AM) Infield and Catcher are much more scary. I am not sure if we have another guy in the system that actually projects to be a starting catcher defensively, with any real chance to hit at the major league level. Catchers have been surprisingly affordable on market, I'm okay that we'll find what we need there. Granted sox have been horrible at pro scouting catchers (to perform while a white sox I guess)
-
I think one thing to keep in mind per ss2k5's point is the difference is sox legit need 3 starters out of that group whereas you could really only say that about padres. I still do like our OF depth and think Luis Gonzalez will be the big punch up guy we are looking for. Much more meh on our MI guys that are versatile. A few true CF prospects, but few SS that we could move wherever needed.
-
BA was the high group on Singer for a while so it's notable to see that correction. I don't know about our pick of McClanahan. I love the stuff, I think he'd bein majors soon. I don't know that the sox would take a TJ guy. I still think sox may cut a deal with Turang and really play deep in this draft.

FS: Major changes to minor league rules in 2018
bmags replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
6 mound visits has struck me as artificially low. I was on Manfred's side when he framed his goal as to reduce the amount of downtime during a game. But the crusade to shorten up extra inning games especially with something so illogical (baserunner just appearing on 2nd) has really annoyed me. -

I think sox are a bit short on high ceiling bats and uber athletes, but I do think they have a good amount of mlb playable bats with passable defense. So depth wise I think we will be there, just need to find some elite production somewhere.

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 07:22 AM) I think Beer can still go first round with a strong second half to this college season. He could very well end up with Rooker type numbers by season’s end and he’s a year younger than Rooker at the time of the draft. Maybe he figured something out? Will see.. http://www.thestate.com/sports/college/acc...e207677944.html Yeah I think he can go into the late first too. But he's not going top ten.

QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 10:03 PM) Looks like Birmingham's roster is pretty much set: http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t247 I'm surprised by a couple placements. Didn't think we'd see Goldberg, Clark, Walsh dropped down. Fisher is also a surprise, but I guess expected because of how stacked the lower minor league OF's are. Looks like all the ST invitees stuck around for Charlotte. I’m not surprised by Fisher. They had a crunch, he is more age appropriate for Birmingham than the others and is a fringe enough prospect they can afford to risk it with him more.

For college is stats havent been particularly great for 2 years. Check out how insane rookers stats were last year. He was a second round pick. Sox picking beer at for would be incredibly strange.

Advertising Boycotts When Celebs Say Stupid Things
bmags replied to greg775's topic in The Filibuster
I still think about that family that lost their toddler to a gator attack and then had social media destroy them a second time casting blame on the parents. Anyway, I think the boycotts are a silly form of protest but they are just a form of protest. And it does effect sometimes where I shop, for instance, I never go to oberweis! -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 02:56 PM) Isnt that at least somewhat true for us, too? The White Sox were not willing to put out a $150-175 million payroll with only a non-zero chance of getting back to the playoffs. At the time, that?€™s what it would have taken to overcome post-World Series KC, the rising Indians. Even the Twins had Sano/Buxton/Berrios arriving...and the Tigers?€™ willingness to outspend with Ilitch. It's somewhat true but moreso I'd say the sox need of filling in depth with veteran contracts was not an efficient use of their modest budget. Compare that to an actual sell-off with the Marlins. The sox for example held onto QUintana for the right time, whereas the marlins needed to move off stanton to get to a payroll threshold.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 02:36 PM) The Marlins and Indians did the same thing at least twice. Now at least three times in Miami. The A?€™s have been cycling through tanks over and over again. The Twins...the Padres, many examples. Otoh, without the Shields deal, the White Sox have the lowest payroll in baseball by $10 million and clearly the #1 farm system with up to five superstars or at least All-Star caliber talents in the system (Jimenez, Tatis, Kopech, Robert, Hansen, Cease...and, if you squint hard enough, Collins because of the dearth of legit catching prospects, or Micker Adolfo). So the unique differentiating point is teams like the Cubs and Astros based rebuild on hitting/positional prospects moreso than the Sox approach of pitching first. I think he tried to wiggle out of the marlins/indians examples because those were driven by costs.

I guess Renteria was serious about more consistent lineups this year.
