Barons 3 Huntsville 1 W-Philips (6-1) CG L- Woolard Heath was on the game tonight as the pitching staff has been outstanding this week. Heath was on cruise control and other than a little threat in the 5th with 2 outs Huntsville mounted no other serious threat's. In the 6th I love Razor call to allow Ryan to hit 3-0 with a runner on 3rd and the infield in Sweeney hit a bounding ball over the 2nd baseman's head for an RBI single. Gozno also had a 2 run Double and Cip Garcia had a 2-2 game with an HBP.

BC Powder SL Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Awards (June 27-July 3) Posted on Jul 4, 2005 MARIETTA, GA – Hitter of the Week JOSH FIELDS – BIRMINGHAM BARONS Barons’ third baseman Josh Fields becomes the second straight Birmingham player selected BC Hitter of the Week after outfielder Chris Young received the honor last week. Fields’ hitting helped lead the Barons to a 4-1 record in five games and first place in the South Division standings. The third baseman had two hits in four out of five games played and led all Southern League players during the week with six doubles and seven extra-base hits. Baseball America rates Fields the fourth best prospect in the White Sox organization. The White Sox selected Fields in the first round (18th overall) of the 2004 draft out of Oklahoma State University, where he also played football and set a school record for career touchdown passes with 55. On June 27, Whitaker shut down the potent Diamond Jaxx offense, pitching seven innings and allowing four hits and one earned run in a 2-1 BayBears’ victory. The right-hander pitched just as effectively in his next start on July 3 at Trustmark Park against the Mississippi Braves. Whitaker pitched 6.2 innings, allowing nine hits and one earned run to go along with seven strikeouts in Mobile’s 4-1 victory. QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 11:46 PM) Can anyone tell me what pitches Jenks has? What does he clock at for each pitch ? I know he used to have that 103 mph 4-seamer what is it now? 101 MPH FB, A cut fastball (doesn't use it much so I am not positive on it) 92-94 uses it for Ground Balls, 12-6 Curve. Both Curve and FB are + pitches

Barons 1 Huntsville 0 W- Haeger (3-0) L- Sarfate Sv-Jenks (18) Wow very impressive outing by Charlie tonight of the 3 hits he gave up none where hit hard all bloops, Not even a good swing tonight. I remeber saying to myself that the Huntsville hitters would be praying for a Fastball pitcher well they got one in 9th by the name of Bobby Jenks and the pitch Sequence went as follows #1 Fastball 98 Foul Tip #2 Fastball 99 Swing Miss and #3 Curve called strike 3 this was to Tony Gwynn Jr. After a bloop then went fastball to Rotino for a called Strike then Curve called strike finally sinker grounded into 6-4-3 DP to end game. Of the Barons 5 hits 2 for both Chris Stewart and Pedro Lopez. Stewart hit a line shot homer for the only run off Sarfate who was a tough luck loser tonight. What I liked about Haeger tonight was his composure after allowing his second hit of the game a baserunner who was clearly out was called safe that put tying run in scoring position in the 6th with 2 out and Gwynn Jr coming up a slow chopper that was in between Fields and the mound he knew Josh had no chance and might have rushed his throw so Haeger gets it plants off balance fires a strike to nail Gwynn and very good runner. Some roster moves will be made by game time tomorrow from what I am hearing the move could be Matt Smith coming down or Wasserman coming up.

QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 12:34 PM) I'm not sure how that is that much different from the Crede, Anderson, good prospect trade I proposed. I talked with an D-backs scout they asked Houston about Oswalt and 2 ML and 2+ Prospects (D'Antona, Quentin) and this took place before the Astro's started winning a little more

QUOTE(MnSoxFan @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 12:26 PM) Pitching is not about strike outs. Right on yesterday Tracey was changing speeds so well it was a pitching clinic out there. I like him as a possible closer. Such a good effort needed a long outing last night

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 09:49 AM) Last night was the first time I had seen the Biscuits (still the dumbest nickname in baseball) and Delmon. He didn't show much last night aside from that deep drive to CF. You could see enough speed and a powerful enough swing to see the potential, but hard to see much more from last night. Obviously the numbers speak for themselves. By the way, where were you at the very end of the game last night? Right behind the plate I had to do scoring for yesterday's game. Next to where Kris Honel and Corwin Malone, I got an early start to beat the traffic out so I didn't see the fireworks almost 9000 last night. Next time I will be behind the plate is this coming sunday.

Also a Transaction C. Garcia called up to Birmingham from WS and Jonathan Aceves sent to Charlotte

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 06:07 PM) I just went to check some games... Looks like Jerry Owens was hit by a pitch leading off the Barons half of the first, and had to be removed from the game. Yep it didn't look like anything that would put him on the DL

Barons 9 Montgomery 1 W-Tracey (9-3) L- Lockwood (2-7) Outstanding outing by Sean Tracey goes the distance had a dominate Fastball to go along with his sinker hitting 97 all the way to the 7th. Chris Young had a 3 hit evening. Josh Fields hit a Grand Slam in the 3rd a 420 ft shot that just cleared the wall in CF that followed a Double in the 2nd. Fields in his next AB was hit by Brian Lockwood and then promptly removed Fields gave a stare to Lockwood but nothing further ensued. Ryan Sweeney had a 2 hit game to and back from family problems Antoin Gray had a pair of doubles. The 4 run 4th was started with 1 on 2 out Chris Young singled to left an error by Johnny Rayburn loaded the bases and a 2-1 pitch was hit out to Center. Charlie Haeger draws the start tomorrow.

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 01:32 AM) Does that mean they'll go with a 6 man rotation or bump someone to the bullpen? Haeger will should be in tomorrow's game -
Montgomery 10 Barons 5 W-Flinn L- Pollok A good start from Honel that looked at the start to be another flop as he gave up 2 of his 3 in the first. Honel had 7 K's in 6 innings throwing 110 pitches (68 Strikes) including 17 in a row through the 2nd and 3rd. First pitcher I seen this year to have Delmon Young looking bad struck him out twice and got a 1-2 popup. Pollok didn't really have a bad 8th an infield single because of all the drying agent used on the field the ball chopped down the third baseline and instead of rolling foul when the ball came down and hit the ground the ball completely stopped never seen that happen before, then a routine DP ball was mishandled by Rogo who took his eyes off the ball then a walk on a very questionable 3-2 pitch then a broken bat flare down the LF line just fair just over Fields head that scored 2 then an intentional walk to load the bases and another routine DP on a groundball to Lopez who threw home for the out but the throw to first pulled Rogo off the bag, Next another routine DP ball on a comebacker that pollok threw a strike to Stewart but allowed the ball to tip off the top of the glove because he was trying to turn 2 before he had one that plated a 4th run Pollok the hit the next batter to bring in the 5th run and finally on the 4th DP grounder it was turned by Pollok. A 3 hit game for CY his 30th Double team record (Maggs 39). Owens 2 hits, Josh Fields is hitting a lot better 2 more hits one to right and one to left.

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 01:05 AM) This means the Barons have 6 starters (Honel, Malone, Tracey, Phillips, Haeger, Haigwood) with Lubisich likely out for the year. Does this mean that Phillips or someone else is going up to Charlotte? I doubt there will be any promotions to Charlotte as the Barons Bullpen is down to 3 and both Pollok and LaMura both threw a lot of pitches yesterday: Inactive Players Ryan Meaux Finger (5-10 Days) Andy Gonzalez Ankle (Headed to DL) Antoin Gray Personal Reasons (???) Lubisich Shoulder (Season +) -
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 01:14 PM) If he does that, though, he's also likely to hit for less x-tra base hits. Normally I would certainly agree with you, but Young has tremendous power to all fields that I am not sure his XBH total would decline that much

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 08:46 PM) Yes, I know. I was also the one wondering about the obsession. I know batting average isn't the be-all and end-all, but his still worries me. Does he go to the opposite field much? I wonder if BHAM could help with that... Yes he can hit to RF with authority he did that yesterday, I would like to see him do it a little more if he does I think the AVG will raise from the .260 range to .290 range.

He had excellent control last night threw one borderline ball (should have been a Strike). He was outstanding

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 02:56 AM) Wow, would you consider Jenks almost unhittable at this point BHAM?? He was tonight no one could have touched the 100 on the outside black after seeing 3 12-6 curves, When I say no one that includes Major Leaguers that pitch was sick. After the game Isenia went over to his coach and asked him what he should have done the coach said there was nothing you could have done, one of the most memorable quotes I have heard this season.

Barons 8 Montgomery 7 W- LaMura L-Autrey Sv- Jenks (18) A very exciting game a 5 run 5th was the key to the victory all started with 2 out none on Rogowski Doubled to Right, Young drew a walk, Sweeney drove a pitch high and deep to Center which I though was a homer but it was a 412 ft Triple that tied it at 4 then Aceves singled to left to make 5-4 Fields was hit by a 2-0 pitch and Blakely hit a ringing double off the LF wall both would have been long gone in Chicago. Barons Grabbed what turned to be the game winning run when Owens lead off with what appered to be triple off the RF wall but ruled a Ground Rule double instead, Gonzalez singled up the middle to score Jerry. Reynoso made things very interseting in the 8th a lead off single then a long homerun to Shawn Riggins then got a flyout then a strike out of Luis Mateo but a single to Johnny Rayburn set up an awsome matchup with Delmon Young, Razor left Reynoso in who gave up a single their next hitter is vetran Rico Washington a good hitter in his own right Jenks was called in after a 100 MPH taken strike to make a 1-2 count Jenks broke off a 12-6 and that was the end of the inning. In the 9th after a groundout and flyout Charion Isenia stood in the way first pitch was a Curve fouled off then another curve called strike, fouled a third curve off then waisted on a second 100 MPH fastball on the outside black that Isenia swung and missed at. Also to mention B.J. Lamura also pitched well. Johnathan Aceves was 3-4 Owens 2-5 and Rogo 2-4.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 09:41 AM) No one is whining. I think some people just recognize that our offense isn't hitting as well as they should be and think it is a valid concern... Sortable Team Stats: .260 team AVG (ranked 24th in MLB) .323 team OBP (ranked 26th in MLB) *waits for the obligatory, "look at our record!" response* I guess we could be like the Marlins who are 5th in BA and 5th in OBP yet 12th in runs and in 4th place.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 12:44 AM) Fields his one 407 feet and it wasnt a HR? Nope just a long double he would have had to hit 414 to center to get it out.
