  3. Top list? Ooooooooooooooooooooooo-kay. double, we actually agree for once...... I thought this list is somewhat weak for what I thought it might have been. Hell, if they let us pick the players, we could give them 4 guys from this list and not miss a beat. Don't get me wrong, there is talent on this list, but the Sox have better.
  4. Taken right out of Moneyball. Oakland tries to figure how much each win they get above the 42 games costs them. They want their cost per win above 42 to be cheaper than everyone else's, while still winning enough to make the playoffs.
  5. Rauch is hurt right now. Yep, just placed on the DL. Info please! Shoulder... Not expected to be serious. Back in 7-10 days, most likely.
  6. Miles played at least a half a season at 3B in 2001 when Tim Hummel was playing in Birmingham.
  7. Rauch is hurt right now.
  8. I too read Moneyball and had mixed reactions. Some of their ideas are pretty radical and I am not sure I completely agree with them. The one thing I will say is that their methods have taught me to think a little differently and to not be afraid to look into numbers more, rather than just take them at face value. One of the most interesting things I found in the book was how much of a meddler Beane is. If people here with the Sox thought KW was bad, my God there is no way he could even come close to Billy Beane! That, and the guy never watches games. He's afraid watching the games will make him too subjective. Lots of good stuff in the book, but it didn't make me a convert. Hell, it made me realize what a SOB Billy Beane is.
  9. I disagree completely. Trying to score on a shallow fly ball with a 16 run lead in the bottom of the 7th inning is not kosher. The Red Sox are lucky the Marlins didn't plant one in someone's ear. There are unspoken ways to play the game right and that does not fit within those. It just shows that many guys in this generation don't understand everything about the game. Some things, you just don't do. The guy was thrown out by 5 feet for christ's sake. With a 16-run lead? I'd have plunked the next son of a b**** that came to the plate and smiled while doing it.
  10. 87-88 consistently. Occasionally, getting to 90-91. I have not seen every pitch he has thrown, but I have seen a lot and have seen those readings consistently on several radar guns. On the one at the Hoover Met, he reads 84-86, but that is documented to be 3-4 mph slow, with occasionally a 5 mph variance.
  11. My guess is no. Not unless someone has to be replaced because of a promotion.
  12. Since when has Carl Everett been known for playing any more than an average CF?? Don't kid yourself, this move wasn't made for better D in CF. It was made because of his perceived bat. I hope I am wrong here, but I just don't see him making that big of a difference. The words you just said about Everett were almost exactly what I have said about Alomar.
  13. I'm only partially getting caught up in prospects. The other part just plain doubts Everett is that big of an upgrade. On the surface it seems like he would be a huge upgrade (and may be), but dig deeper and I just don't see the numbers. I had no problem with Ring going in the Alomar deal. Let's just hope that Honel or Cotts or even Wing are not included in the Everett deal (I know supposedly at least Honel is not).
  14. I almost wonder if there may be more players potentially involved since the trade may not be complete until the trading deadline. Could the extra three players be prospects on other teams that the Sox think they may be able to get in another trade? So maybe the list of Sox players is only 5?? A stretch, perhaps, but anything is possible.
  15. Cotts was on the Barons bus that came back to Birmingham last night and was interviewed by news crews along with Royce Ring. Don't believe everything you hear!
  16. John Hart was quoted in the Dallas Morning News that they will pick two or three players from a pool of 8 players. They trade may not be finalized until July 31.
  17. Yeah I am happy we are getting a guy hitting .198 in the last 5 weeks!
  18. From someone that has seen both Cotts and Malone extensively, I will tell you that there is no comparison. Cotts' control has improved greatly over his last several starts and you can see it. Malone was and is very raw. Cotts is very polished. From someone that has seen Buehrle, Biddle, Wells, Fogg, Garland, Wright and others, Cotts is as good or better than any of them at this point in their development.
  19. Conversely, I know Everett is a helluva hitter, and have faith in the fact that what you saw from him in June is an abberation. Look at Everett's career stats. They are posted in another thread. He has only had TWO good years, the rest have been decent, but by no means great. Everybody remembers his two good years (1 with Houston and 1 with Boston) and his fast start to this year. I hope he helps us, but I don't think he will be appreciably better than what we have already. He may hit a few more homers, but I don't think you would see a big difference. It is not out of the question to think that the combo of Rowand/Harris could hit .260-.275 the rest of the year with 5-10 HR and 30 RBI. So the question is, how much will Everett give you over that?? Will that be worth what we will give up? Only time will tell. Everyone says that Everett is such a great hitter, but I can't find stats to back that up, beyond those two huge years he had. His numbers say he is pretty average, even 4th OF average. His average numbers over 8 MLB seasons: .277 16 HR 67 RBI Give him the benefit of the doubt and only count 7 1/2 seasons since he spent time in AAA in 1995 and you get: .279 17 HR 72 RBI Great Hitter like everyone says???
  20. Somewhere I read tonight that the Sox and O's almost had a deal for Ponson worked out, but they could not agree on $$. I think the Sox wanted Balt. to pay more of his salary then the O's wanted to. Also, I don't believe Texas is paying all of Everett's salary. The Sox were to receive cash considerations equal to a percentage of Everett's salary. That could translate to paying the percentage that is left, but I did not read it that way. Lastly on money, I believe the Sox are paying $150,000 of Alomar's salary which is the pro-rated amount of the Major League minimum.
  21. White Sox nab Everett Rangers deal outfielder for two or three prospects to be named 07/02/2003 By SEAN HORGAN / The Dallas Morning News ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Rangers couldn't move outfielder Juan Gonzalez last week, but they had no such troubles Tuesday when they sent outfielder Carl Everett and cash to the Chicago White Sox for multiple players to be named. The Rangers will recoup either two or three young players who will come from a pool of eight players agreed upon by them and the White Sox. General manager John Hart said the trade would be complete by the trade deadline of July 31. "It will be a combination of pitching and position players," Hart said. "We could go with several combinations, some of which will give us two players and others that will give us three." Everett, 32, who had to waive his no-trade clause for the deal to happen, wasn't officially informed of the deal until after the game. Everett, hitting .274 with 18 home runs and 51 RBIs in 74 games, was not in the Texas starting lineup Tuesday. "I'm going to miss these guys," Everett told the Associated Press. "But unfortunately it comes down to the fact that we're not winning. You know how it goes in July. "I'm going to go there (Chicago) and play the game I always play," he said. "I play hard and I play to win. It feels good that a team like that thinks that I'm one of the missing pieces to their team." The White Sox also will receive cash from Texas in the form of a percentage of Everett's salary. Hart said the leading candidate to replace Everett on the Texas roster is minor league outfielder Ryan Ludwick, who through Monday led the Pacific Coast League in extra base hits (43) and ranked second in home runs (17). "I can't say enough about what Carl did for us this year," Hart said. "It's a very tough trade to make because Carl knows how to play the game." The deal solidified the Rangers' status as sellers and the White Sox as buyers. It was Chicago's second trade of the day. Earlier Tuesday, it sent three prospects to the New York Mets for second baseman Roberto Alomar. The Everett deal ends the outfielder's year-and-a-half tenure with the Rangers. They acquired him from the Boston Red Sox on Dec. 13, 2001 for left-handed pitcher Darren Oliver. Everett had a rocky first year with the team as he struggled to return to form after off-season knee surgery. He hit .267 with 16 homers and 62 RBIs in 105 games in 2002, but clashed with then-manager Jerry Narron over playing time. Though he had well-documented problems in Boston with fans, umpires and managers Jimy Williams and Joe Kerrigan, Everett was a model citizen under manager Buck Showalter this year. In fact, when Showalter talked about possible Texas players who could be moved, the manager said that if he were in a pennant race, Everett would be the player he would seek because of his toughness, versatility and ability to play well in pressurized situations. "He's meant a lot to this team," Showalter said. "It's going to be tough to say goodbye to Carl. He ranks right up there in the sincerity department about wanting to win." In talking about the players the Rangers may receive, Showalter said all will be younger than age 25 and should bolster the organization. "It's a good deal. We have a chance to put two and maybe three guys into our system that can really help," he said. Showalter said he talked to Everett as early as Sunday night about the possibility of a deal. "The White Sox got a good fit for what their needs are," Showalter said. "He plays three positions and he brings it every day. He's been a rock for us all year." That's not to say Everett didn't have some interesting moments this year. On April 19, Everett was hit in the head with a cellphone thrown by a fan in the right-field seats in Oakland. He responded by homering off Mark Mulder upon leading off the next inning. He also was the target of thrown balls by Red Sox fans when the Rangers played Boston at Fenway Park on May 15. But like other incidents, Everett shrugged it off and played. Now he'll be doing his playing for the resurgent White Sox.
  22. Heather, are you flirting?? ;-)
  23. Actually they designated them for assignment. The Sox have 10 days to trade them, put them through waivers and then send them to AAA on a Minor League contract, which then they would have the right to refuse that assignment and become a free agent. That process can be done faster than 10 days, but the Sox have that long if they so choose.
  24. We should wait until the end of the year and let some of those questions answer themselves. And freakin ENJOY THE MOMENT

Wily Mo is out of options. He originally signed a Major League contract so his first three years in the Minors were all option years. Oh ok. Still, I'd think that having Konerko up there and signing a major league contract and the extension would of done that. Looking on yahoo right now to find something. That's the reason for my question. What is the trigger that makes a player not susceptible to options that may have never been used?
