    Tipping

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Dec 1, 2008 -> 06:46 PM) Is it not true bartenders can pull down a few hundred dollars a night in tips on busy weekends? Or is that just college towns? And yes, if the beer is already $6 I don't need to tip every time for turning around to grab a beer and taking the cap off. You know how much they pay per beer, and I'm pretty sure they make a lot off the $6 already. Plus, it doesn't always guarantee they'll get right to you anyways next time through, which is crap if they can actually distinguish from the non tippers. And how did that beer get to your hand? Who brought it off the truck to the cooler, who brought it most likely up stairs in bulk and placed it in the cooler nicely and cleanly so that you get a nice clean cold beer? Part of the tip goes to those guys too. And yes, bartenders can pull down a couple of hundred dollars on a weekend which helps offset the weekday nights when they make crap. Its not a very glamerous gig no matter what it looks like when you are out on a weekend night ordering from them. And when I was slinging drinks on the regular I ALWAYS knew who treated me nicely, and who tipped. To me, the most important thing is for the customer to be courteous and patient, which is about 10 percent of patrons on a weekend night.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 1, 2008 -> 04:45 PM) Yes, the fluke Oregon loss that has been acknowledged by the refs, Boise State, losing 3 of the last 4 to TX, losing to Kansas St. in the B12 Championship game and the bad losses to USC and LSU in the NC games have tarnished Stoops' "Big Game Bobby" reputation a bit. They came out flat against WV last year, too, and never recovered. Still, they didn't exactly choke this year coming down the stretch. I don't think we'll see them lose to Missouri either, a team that I don't think has EVER beaten Stoops since he joined the OU program ten years ago. Of all the coaches in college football, there aren't many you'd clearly take ahead of Stoops. Maybe Carroll, but how difficult is it to recruit at USC? Yes, kudos to him for building that storied program back, but it's not without great natural resources to harness. Saban? Well, that guy's still a huge prick to me, no matter what he does in the future. Urban Meyer? Maybe. But he's lost some big games, too. Every coach has...and some games (like MS this year) you find hard to explain. Most of OU's "surprising" losses have come on the road, or against Oklahoma State or TX. Ah, I wasnt really harping on Stoops, I was just making a point about the also-rans in college football. I think he's a great coach. My own favorite coach Tressell has had his share of big game let downs and I still wouldnt want another coach in America to be on the sidelines for the Buckeyes.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 1, 2008 -> 04:53 PM) Not to be an ass, but isn't that why the beers cost like 7 dollars...? I don't tip for every beer either btw, not at that price, esp. when I drink it in the bottle. For shots and mixed drinks that's different, I always tip at least one dollar a drink. When I buy the 25 cent beers I either give them a full dollar and walk away or I give them 2 bucks depending on how much I've tipped that night and what's in my pocket. Yes, if there was no tipping then the bar would have to give more base compensation to the people who serve you which would make the beer price go up even more. As it stands right now, the increased cost of alcohol comes from the operating cost including taxes, licenses, etc that have been rising every year. Its hard for people who havent been in the service industry to understand the jobs that these people do, but its a thankless job that is based on tipping. The entire compensation is based on the assumption the server will earn tips. If there were no tips, a bartender who works their ass off all night at a bar would bring in about 40-60 bucks a night, which would mean the bar backs would probably make less, and the bus boys and so on.
  5. QUOTE (Shadows @ Dec 1, 2008 -> 04:09 PM) Ide think going undefeated and upsetting one of the bigger teams in a BCS bowl game would mean more to those schools than going undefeated getting the last spot in a playoff, and getting annihilated in round 1 You'd think. I'm all for a playoff system of about 8 or 16 teams, but in the current format is where these smaller schools have a better chance at a higher final ranking IMO. In a playoff system generally the outliers are eliminated.
  6. I still dont understand the uproar about Jim Rice, if he didnt play for Boston, he would be an afterthought. He played 15 years and only had 382 HR's. He was very good, but doesn belong in the HOF IMO.
  7. If Tim Raines doesnt get into the HOF, I will shoot someone. He is the second best leadoff man I have ever seen.
  8. QUOTE (Shadows @ Dec 1, 2008 -> 03:53 PM) Come on man, I don't care if they were undefeated AND won their bowl game.. So Boise State has to pull all their trick plays out of their ass to edge OU.. there is zero chance they can then go the next week and beat Florida, and then the next week and beat USC.. and so on It aint gonna happen, and all you do with a playoff in college football is pretty much come down to the same teams who would be fighting for a BCS spot anyways.. The reason teams like Utah and Boise State go undefeated and don't get a chance to play for a national title is because they don't play anyone in the regular season Exactly. Utah barely got by Michigan for god sakes. Boise St can really cling to their miracle upset of Choke-lahoma, but neither of those teams would survive in the playoff system, so they should be content with their occasional piece of the pie and shut up.

    Tipping

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Nov 30, 2008 -> 06:01 PM) Oh and I hate tipping when a bartender gets me a bottle of beer. Turning around and grabbing something is not worth a dollar. I usually just tip every other beer in that situation. Thats just being cheap, you obviously havent worked in the service industry. Let me edit and expand so you dont think im being an ass. If you want to drink beer for free you should stay home. Otherwise you are paying for all the ammenities of a bar if you go there. -The barback who keeps those beers cold and stocked, who keeps the bottles full and the bar clean -the busbuy who clears your plates and fills your water -the guy who cleans up after you in the bathroom -the guys who clean the entire bar at night -the staff that manages the supplies, food, drinks and overall bar business -the general upkeep of the bar, including the heat, AC, windows, doors, music etc If you dont feel like you need to give money to the people who complete some of that work for you and keep the bar you are at in good working condition, then honestly, please stay home.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 30, 2008 -> 09:56 PM) Time to bench Orton....as bad of a performance as you could imagine. The entire offensive line should be benched first. Also the receivers and their terrible routes, Hester was 100 percent at fault for the pick returned all the way down to the 12 yard line.
  11. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Dec 1, 2008 -> 06:48 AM) College football - where you can win every game and not be a champion. Its a good thing too. Utah and Boise dont deserve to be anywhere near the BCS title game, which is good for college football, because neither of those teams deserve a shot, nor to be called a national champ.
  12. QUOTE (The Critic @ Nov 28, 2008 -> 10:44 AM) I call Black Friday "The Running of the Jags". People stealing s*** out of each other's carts and s*** like that = classless. It's just not worth it. Again, thank Al Gore for online shopping - I got my nephew an Iron Man DVD and Robot Chicken Season One DVD for 22 bucks total, and didn't put myself at risk of trampling. Thats the funniest thing to observe. Go to a store like that, and just watch what people do to get a few bucks off of some crappy piece of merchandise. You turn your back, and boom, your cart is gone.
  13. QUOTE (greasywheels121 @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 09:22 PM) Fair enough. This year's all about development, as this should be a quick rebuild, with the reinforcements Crean's got coming in. Honestly, I'm enjoying watching this team. It may not be pretty, but it's nice to know you're getting their 110% all the time. Crean is a great coach, I dont think it will be too many seasons like this if not just this one.
  14. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 27, 2008 -> 09:47 AM) False. The person below me has helped get a buddy laid. As recently as last night. The person below me has a secret addiction
  15. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 02:16 PM) 2 pieces of news today for Notre Dame and Charlie Weis: 1. According to Teddy Greenstein and the Tribune, Weis' buyout, which was reported to be huge, is actually "loose change" and won't affect if Weis is retained or not. The buyout could be anywhere from 2 to 4.5 million, based on what the paper implies. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/colle...0,3989895.story 2. Terry Boers just said on Boers and Bernstein that Weis will be fired Monday unless Notre Dame somehow wins at USC this weekend (not happening). Take that for what it's worth, but Boers NEVER goes out on a limb and reports something one of his "peeps" said like that. If he's not, I think its pretty obvious that Willingham was fired for reasons other than his record.
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 05:18 PM) Gavin Floyd at the time of the trade was a huge question mark, and Jermaine Dye (probably) has more value than Freddy Garcia did at the time of his trade, considering he's coming off a better year and isn't a free agent after the season unless the team decides to make him one. You'll need quite a bit more than Homer Bailey. Yeah, a bit more meaning one other player. Dye is 35 years old and according to this board is below avg in RF. He is an injury risk and is at close to peak value for the rest of his career. This is the time to trade him, and getting one of the top prospects in baseball a year or two ago is good for me.
  17. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 03:44 PM) This part makes me wonder: In what world is Andy Sonnanstine a more desirable target than Javy Vazquez? Am I the only one who can't understand why teams like this guy? He throws strikes with his junk and changes speeds on it. I'd rather not give up any talent and sign Paul Byrd, who BTW looks like a cross between Kelsey Grammer and a turkey. Its the New York Media's way of driving down the price of a starter.
  18. QUOTE (yoyozuna @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 04:01 PM) I heard he is asking for 4/48. Do you think KW would be willing to spend that on a SS? Yes, actually. It fills two holes, three moving Alexei to CF. He has to unload either Javy's or Dye's contract first though. This is one of the reasons we will try in house options at 3B and maybe LF.
  19. QUOTE (heirdog @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) That is if he is really 19. I bet he's closer to 24. Next thing you're gonna try and tell me is that Alexei is 27 or 28, whatever he's listed at. The guy's probably 32 but he's still good so I'll take him for another 3+ years. Ehhhh, all sources point to their ages being accurate. If you are telling me you really believe Alexei's frame and face is indicative of a 32 year old, then I will have to tell you to get out of the house a little more.
  20. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 01:40 PM) That. I don't see why any Blackhawks fan would hate Chris Chelios. He's one of the best players we've ever had, and he was devoted to the team and the city far longer than he should have been. Cheli's Chili was a staple of pre-games about 10 years ago... The Hawks shipped him out because he was "done", yet he played almost 10 more years, and was above-average for about 7 of them. Yup, nice guy in the community , born here, local guy lived in Evergreen Park. He was part of some of my favorite Hawks teams of all time. The guy is one of the best American born players of all time.
  21. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 02:08 PM) WHY WON'T MOHINDER DIE!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!! Ok, so in the future they all still have power, on both sides of the fence, how the hell are we going to get back to that. Also Mohinder in the future still was a freakshow. WTF
  22. Pip was one of the 100 best players at one point right? He will go down as one of the best players ever in the Bulls uni, but also as one of the better players of all time. D Rose has a chance to be every bit as good if not better though. Pip's career stats: 16.1 ppg 6.4 RPG 5.2 APG Alot of that is lowered by his older years, but at his peak he was still only a 20 8 and 6 guy.
  23. QUOTE (rangercal @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 01:52 PM) another 670 the score rumor thread that will likely end up as nothing. Anyone think they make things up? Its strategically leaked by members of the Sox org.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 01:48 PM) I hadn't seen that you said that. I gotta give you credit, you were dead on about Dayan. Ah, I was about 4 days later than I thought.
