  1. QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 11:02 AM) Forget about the bullpen, we all know it needs improvement and that has been beaten to death. Besides, bullpens are usually a crapshoot. Going in, you usually know who your #1 and 2 are going to be, beyond that you never know. I'd like to see an upgrade at the leadoff spot. Podsednik has been good, not great for this team. He can't steal like he used to, and his OBP isn't THAT great. .350 ain't bad, but it could be better. I've grown tired of Podsednik lately. He's a great guy, but I think the Sox can do much better. I'd like to see another legit ace come into the equation. I'm sorry, I love everything that Buerhle has done for this team the last 6 years, but I see him as a really good number 2. I don't see him as an ace. I'm not asking for Liriano/Santana, but I'd like to see a legit ace replace Vazquez in the rotation. Unfortunately, that is easier said than done. Money talks. (oh yeah, and EVERY team wants a legit ace to replace their 5th starter, haha) I think the pen is okay with Jenks, Thornton, Cotts, Riske handling the bulk of the crucial situations. That's better than most. We aren't going to be able to upgrade over Pods this year and still have a lead off man. Legit aces are hard to come by. That ain't happening.
  2. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:56 AM) I wasn't saying that they don't have the right to juggle; I just thought it was odd, and a New York friend of mine who loves RJ told me, after I joked to her that RJ fears Contreras, "It's indicative of a greater problem: that Torre has lost confidence in Randy!" I don't think that's it, but I don't know. I was just asking. I don't think it's that. I think the Yankees are weighing their options and trying to set things up so they'll be better off in the long run. The AS break is the best opportunity to do that.
  3. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:59 AM) I thought both Garcia and Vazquez would be leaving. My impression of what Kenny is trying to do is trade for two bullpen arms. I think it's going to be one or the other, not both.
  4. QUOTE(Beltin @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:48 AM) In general, the NY Times is one of the greatest daily periodicals in the world. The Chicago papers are an embarrasment, especially wehen compared to the Times. If I am not mistaken, it is one of the few, if not the only, paper written at an 8th grade level of reading. I think the Chicago press is all at a 4th or 5th grade level. That is not a joke, it is done deliberately, supposedly to maximize circulation. Anyway, I really need to cancel my Trib subscription and start getting the Times again. The local tilt just isn't worth it, especially when I can get the business news I really need off the web. The NYT is liberal rag.
  5. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:44 AM) Anyone know why they switched Johnson for Moose, then switched back? f*** the Bankees. First game after 4 days off... maybe. They have the freedom to juggle as they see fit.
  6. QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:50 AM) I know who you were referring to, but I had some little problems at first. I got banned for 3 days at one point for trying to defend myself. I've been here like a month. Defend yourself in a more civil manner. I don't remember the circumstances of your suspension, but err on the side of caution. Just consider this friendly advice.
  7. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:38 AM) lol I don't think he meant you... Affirmative.
  8. I hope everybody learns to hate the White Sox as much as they hate the Yankees.
  9. I'll tell you what ... both of you need to knock it off. This is exactly the type crap we don't want around here. Let it go. Walk away. Don't think you have to get the last word. It's not worth it. PLEASE!
  10. QUOTE(POPPY_HIDALGO @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 08:31 AM) The Twins won't be making anymore noise in the 2nd half. They made their run and are done. Someone else mentioned Cleveland getting hot, not gonna happen. They'll probably be dumping more guys. As long as the Sox don't have brain farts against the Devil Rays and Royals of the world everything will be alright. I also predict Anderson will be batting close to .280 by seasons end. No way. He's in too deep of a hole. He may hit .280 in the second half, but it won't be his season's average.
  11. I think he'll reach 50 if he stays healthy. As was mentioned earlier, he's due for one of his patented hot streaks (and it might have kicked in if the AS break hadn't come along ... 5 dingers in July). I predict 52.

    QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 09:19 AM) Whether or not these deals happen remains to be seen, but I am happy (if not surprised) KW's appearantly not satisfied with our starting rotation. The two discussed trades (for Sanchez or Gordon) would be good for us, imo. I do worry about Brandon making the transition back to starting this late in the year. Jason Schmidt, assuming McCarthy isn't used in the trade, would look really good in a Sox uni. I don't think it would take BMac more than 3 starts to get his endurance to where it needs to be. The bullpen would have to handle the load for a litle bit, but if we supplement that in the trade, it shouldn't be a problem.
  13. Some of those youger guys (Anderson, BMac for example) are not arbiration eligble. They have to be 4 year players, I think, before they earn that right. What that means is that Sox can pay them whatever they feel they are worthy of.
  14. QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 06:11 PM) Haha yea, if he can't get outs in the NL CENTRAL, with 2 of the most putrid offenses in MLB, how the hell is he going to get the Blue Jays and Red Sox out? Baltimore and the Rays are better than the Cubs and Royals by themselves. The Royals are in the NL Central? How did I miss that?
  15. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 09:25 PM) Everybody's reaction was the same at the beginning, and when you look at the name power involved it's an easy edge towards the Nationals. Still, Wagner has been terrible in triple-a, Lopez has had his troubles in Cincinatti, and Austin Kearns has been injured constantly. I just happen to think its a lot closer than people here seem to think. I agree with you. Yes, the Reds paid a steep price but they went from having a horrid bullpen to a very solid solid in a weeks time. They just added Guardado to close, and these two guys from the Nats will probably be setup men from each side. Clayton will tighten up that defense, which makes every pitcher they have just a little better.

    Vazquez

    Basically, this idea has been thoroughly shot down.
  17. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 12:37 AM) Direct me to the post you're referring to. I believe that would be post #12.
  18. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 12:53 AM) After seeing Houston trade for Huff, I can't really see them as sellers at the deadline, so the likes of Qualls will probably be staying put. BA has an .840 OPS so far this month, and has hit about .238 since June, that number slowly increasing with each game. Hunter's total OPS is .787 so far this season, a figure that has slowly decreased since the 2004 season. I wouldn't call him a huge upgrade on offense, and it's certainly not worth the prospects you'd have to give up to make such a move. I agree. I believe Brian will do just fine in the second half.
  19. Can anybody beat this pair? USA - Jailhouse Rock, Elvis Presley UK - That'll Be The Day - Buddy Holley and the Crickets.
  20. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 01:04 AM) Please look at the substance of my post, and don't just fal back on a pre-conceived perception that I'm anti-Christian. I am a non-Christian, and I am against any one religious viewpoint holding sway over all others to the point of subjugation, and that is it in a nutshell. As for the proposed analogous situation - employing modern medicine to combat pneumonia - it is only analogous if somewhere along the line you intentionally fertilize a half-dozen ova and selfishly decide to gestate them all within a single uterus while silmultaneoulsly fertilizing a half-dozen more that you know are going to be destroyed ('MURDERED') down the road. No embryos were murdered when you got your hypothetical pneumonia treatmet, or me my flu shots. But despite the standard protestations of the 'once it's fertilized it's life' crowd, embryo murder is apparently just fine and dandy if it's a mere side effect of fertility clinic protocol. I mean, isn't that the whole beef with contemporaray stem cell research -- that incipient human lives are destroyed in the process? How is the destruction of the same human lives after in vitro (e.g., when a clinic freezer is cleared out) so above reproach to amany of the same people (not necessarily you) that would condemn research that could save and improve untold of actual living and breathing human beings? When you threw "God's will" into the equation, you made it analogous. I'm not arguing the rights or wrongs of the fertilized ova.
  21. QUOTE(tealeafreaderii @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 02:14 AM) Because in our country's relatively short history white people haven't been discriminated against (one of the benifites of not being a minority)... Hillbilly is basically synonomous with ignorant, it doesn't carry the same history as F** or N*****... A black man or a homosexual walking in an unfamiliar neighborhood hear those words and they immidiately fear for there safety... I'm not saying its right, but thats the way it is. The best way for Bobby to handle this is to ignore it and don't give it the credibility of a response. If he wants to sue this asshole... do it in the offseason... I don't want Bobby thinking of anything other then the next batter. Any word that lumps a group of people together and has negative stereotypical connotations, ie hillbilly = ignorance, is discriminitory. One discriminitory term should not be more acceptable than another.
  22. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 01:48 AM) Can I post nude pictures of his wife? Or is that frowned upon? Totally frowned upon. But, I do have a perfect valid email addy.
  23. Typical. If a white person is a victim of discriminitory remarks, he's supposed to let it go. If it's a black or as we have recently seen, a homosexual, then the whole damn world wants to decapitate whoever said the remarks.
  24. QUOTE(MSHAWKS @ Jul 12, 2006 -> 10:54 PM) I understand all that. And, as I said, I'm willing to acknowledge that Brian might become a decent player. I hope he does. On the other hand, there are hundreds of young players over the years with the same attributes that you pin on Brian who never panned out. Why can't the Anderson fans on this site at least admit this possibility exists with Brian? Who's being thick-headed, me or them? I'm with you. I think Anderson will be a good ballplayer, but there is the very real possibility he could become one of the many busts that have worn a Sox uniform in my lifetime.
  25. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 12, 2006 -> 12:18 PM) You're putting a respected newspaper on the same level of a free access internet message board? That's crazy! A newspaper can't possibly measure up to Soxtalk.
