If I recall, any cash that changed hands in the Colon deal went to the Expos, not the Sox. Though, I could be mistaken on that. Regardless of whether Colon and Wells were acquired via trade or FA, JR still had to pay their slaary, and neither one was what you'd call low end on the salary scale.
