The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 10:13 PM) Right, because its not like Dan Rather and CBS pulled a stunt like this... That was the one counterexample I thought of...but even though they did a crappy, crappy job of it...they actually did take some steps to try to authenticate the documents they had before running with them. They took their documents to a "handwriting expert" (who turned out not to be one). They took their documents to a staffer who worked with the person that supposedly originally produced them, and that staffer said the guy in question "agreed with the sentiments in those memos" but she couldn't specifically vouch for the authenticity of them. That's a hell of a lot more than Breitbart/Fox did.

The sleeper thread
QUOTE (ICP! @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 09:14 AM) Yeah they do but they know that will be wearing thinner and thinner in the seasons to come and they know that. He is 36 and you would have to project a decline. Why not get yourself some good young talent like Viciedo and Hudson and start building towards your future when your team is in such turmoil? Because that's not nearly enough talent to offset the combination of fewer wins and revenue decreases I'd take if I sold on Ichiro. If nothing else, let's not forget...Seattle talked themselves into thinking they could compete for the West coming into this season.

NBA Offseason Thread
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 06:57 AM) I mean it's weird here. McGrady is saying the right thing, that he is here to work hard and prove to everyone that he can play a significant role on a good basketball team. That's what NBA players are supposed to want and they are supposed to have that competitive drive. That being said, that's not the Bulls plan for him. I personally think at this point in his career, 15-20 minutes per game of being an instant offensive threat is better for his health than trying to be a 35-minute per game starter who is counted on for defense too. Half of that to me sounds like him saying the right thing, but I can't tell if the other half is him being confident in his rehab to the point of cockiness, which I wouldn't mind at all...or if it's him showing the classic NBA "I've earned these minutes!" streak that we've seen from so many guys. I'd still sign him, but I can't tell which is which. Thankfully, the Bulls happen to have a guy who coached him for 3 years on their staff...Thibodeau.

QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:17 AM) Cavs traded Delonte West to the T-Wolves and the T-Wolves are gonna release him. If he wasn't such a mental and physical headcase and a thug, I would love to have him on our team as a PG/SG. Career 37% three point shooter and a good free throw shooter who plays very good defense even though he's a bit undersized. Having said that little tidbit, I want him as far away from Chicago as possible. Cleveland was close enough for that dude. I hear the Heat are looking for roster fillers.

Dan Haren traded to the Angels
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 11:38 PM) That's the thing about this deal, though. It looks like a pretty mediocre package of players so either Dipoto panicked, lost his f***ing mind or is in love with some of the guys he picked up. If I had to guess I'd say it's the 3rd option, Dipoto and the D-Backs brass/scouts see something in these players that they love and couldn't pass up, especially given that the trade got made a week before the deadline. If that's the case then it would have been difficult for any team to swoop and top the offer. I think you're missing the old "getting major league talent back for the guy" and "adding a left hander to a group of 12 right handed pitcher" options. I think they really, really wanted a major league piece and were willing to take less from the minors to make sure that happened.

The sleeper thread
Seattle still makes a fortune having him on their team through marketing in Asia even when they're losing. If I were in their GM's seat, I would want to get a top of the league guy back if I'm dealing him (seriously, like a Strasbourg, Stanton, Heyward, etc.) since I'd be taking a huge revenue hit.

Hudson's command is just terrible
QUOTE (hitlesswonder @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 11:54 PM) Looking over Law's scouting report, I think if the Sox could get 2 months of Dunn for Santos and Hudson they should do it. Law doesn't seem to think Hudson has much chance to be valuable major-leaguer and he's been spot-on in most of his assessment of the Sox minor league players. In another thread right now, we're noting that Keith Law is writing today that vizquel was never anywhere near as good of a SS as Vizquel was. He's in Vendetta mode against the Sox. He could still be right...but really, Hudson could have looked like Stras out there and he'd have found something bad to write about.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 10:02 PM) Kieth Law ws tweeting that Vizquel was nowhere near the SS Jeter is/was. I unfollowed him. Please tell me he doesn't have an HOF vote.

Teahen cleared for baseball activity...
QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 08:41 AM) Sending Viciedo down when Teahen is ready makes the most sense. He can get some consistent AB's in AAA for most of Aug. and come back in Sept. For the long term, yes that makes the most sense for his development. For winning games...sending away Kotsay and replacing him with Teahen makes the most sense.

Will Omar play next year?
QUOTE (since56 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 07:56 AM) I feel so much better with Pierre-Omar batting 1-2 & Alexi-Vizquell at third and short that I think not only should he come back but the Sox NEED him to come back. It's a roll of the dice if the Sox think they can count on this kind of Vizquel magic next year.

Twins set for trade with Blue Jays
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 06:33 PM) Trading him away, even if he gets you a Ben Revere or a Wilson Ramos, isn't the best idea because I see this Jays team competing as early as next season. Maybe they're worried about his health. Remember, they're still in the AL East. You can't just compete, you have to field a dominant team if you want to even be in the hunt towards the end.

NBA Offseason Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 05:33 PM) Per Sam Smith: Hypothetically, if he comes into the season and plays the role of baby out of the gates...there's really nothing to stop the Bulls from unceremoniously dumping him even if they sign him to a guaranteed contract.

Official 2010-11 NFL Thread
I tell you what, if you're trying to market the Titans in East Tennessee, this is probably as good of a way to do it as I can think of.

Oswalt
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 05:45 PM) What about the Twins if Houston pays for a part of that option? The Twins committed an AWFUL lot of their projected Revenue/salary growth in 1 deal last offseason. They still have a ridiculously rich owner though, but he's shown no signs of shooting past revenue with salaries.

Hudson's command is just terrible
QUOTE (joeynach @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 05:41 PM) or find some sort of replacement and send him back to AAA. You're not finding a replacement unless you trade him. Not one that wouldn't have the same problems, at least.

Jenks will Close again
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 05:28 PM) Bobby's remarks are frustrating, but I guess I'd rather have him holding on to some shred of confidence rather than hanging his head and sounding lost. What I'd have loved to hear is "Yeah, I sucked today, but you know what, it was a bad day, I'm going to go out my next couple outings and earn that job back."

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 05:21 PM) I'm all for second chances, but when the party who recieves that chance does nothing with it they should be dropped from the roster, when the experiment proves to be a failure. Who's going to replace Kotsay when he's dropped? I could see Teahen doing so in a few weeks if he ever comes back.

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 05:20 PM) Yeah it took them long enough to realize Randy Williams was one of the worst arms we've seen in decades. I think they'd have made a move quicker if Threets wasn't on the DL.
