The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 10:40 AM) Specifically I'm talking about the Berkeley rights which were started because of 'Nam. It was government telling people they had to go to war, kinda like the government telling people they have to pay for other people's healthcare. It's not a direct comparison, but in general it's the exact same. It's government telling people to do something they don't feel they need to do. Really? You think the problem with Vietnam was the process that got us there, and not the end result? Specifically, you think the problem was that the government was being too aggressive in pushing the war, and not the fact that 60,000 Americans and a couple million Vietnamese died?

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 10:33 AM) Not who I meant. But I think you know that. And at least to me...the fact that the financial industry lobbyists aren't the ones who have any idea what is going on and yet are the ones making all the decisions is kinda a big part of the problem.

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 10:29 AM) I'm sure that's part of it. But honestly, I really do think a lot of these guys really did NOT know what they were doing. I've seen enough of what they have said and proposed to be sure that they are meddling in areas they do not comprehend. Which isn't to say they still shouldn't act - I hoped they would. I just hope they spent some time talking with people who understand the markets before making their decisions. Really, you don't think that every person remotely involved in decision making on this bill has had hours upon hours of time with finance industry lobbyists over the past year?

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 09:41 AM) You realize BG was offered the same contract as Deng, and if he wasn't an idiot and took it, the franchise would be crippled right now. Are you sure about that? I'm almost certain BG7 was never offered anything like 6/$70 as Deng was, I think they kept the Gordon offer around 5/$55.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 10:26 AM) tea baggers come in two flavors--paulites and palinites. The paulites are your classic libertarians, but your palinites are not fighting against government intervention. They just want their own brand of it. And the Paulites don't?

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 09:24 AM) Yeah that picture is pretty incredible. What are the odds that two separate bolts hit so close at the exact same time like that? Well, both of those buildings are sort of lightning rods...

The environment thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 09:29 AM) We can't, so lets stop living that dream. So I assume most here would find the argument that the ban on near-shore drilling, whic is forcing oil companies to venture out into deeper, more complex drilling areas (with inherently more difficult and complex repairs if anything were to go wrong), is not a good one? If the numbers I believe in are right...it really doesn't matter. U.S. drilling hasn't been able to keep up with U.S. declines since the 1970's, so they'd almost certainly be drilling in deep water regardless of the moratoria, since the U.S. doesn't have enough oil to make up for the yearly production decline...and in a couple years, we'll be able to say that about the world. It's possible that we already saw the hint of that in the 2008 price explosion, which stabilized things temporarily by helping severely damage the global economy and pushed down consumption. If Middle Eastern production slows at all, it really is game over. No amount of onshore drilling or miraculous new technology will make up for it.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 10:06 AM) I'm pretty sure you're taking that out of context. Sadly he's right though. It should make things better, but it went through the Senatorial wringer, which means that there's likely loopholes in there that we haven't even dreamed of yet.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 03:01 AM) What was wrong with today's lineup? I assume Lilly was the guy who angered you today. Beckham hasn't exactly resembled Joe Morgan in his prime. Oz's handling of Rios has been pretty good. Give the guy a rest once in a while. Someday the White Sox will field a perfect team every day and please everybody. Kotsay hitting 3rd, Rios resting for the 3rd day out of 6. Lillibridge and Viciedo playing I have no problem with.

Beckham needs to be sent down
QUOTE (since56 @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 08:40 AM) Beckham has fallen so low I'd rather have Chris Getz at second. He hit .261 last year and has a very good glove. Then we wouldn't have to have Teahan either. Have you taken a look at Getz's numbers this year? He's hitting .224 with an OPS around .550. It's still better than Beckham, but it's still in Andy Gonzalez territory.

Linebrink Question
QUOTE (since56 @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 08:54 AM) Linebrink can be traded. The Sox would have to pay a large portion of his salary and get nothing good in return but at least we get him out od our bullpen. You must have a second tier in the pen so the top guys don't pitch every day. Erik Threets, ( a lefty ) at Charlotte has a .056 era. He looked good in spring training too. I would like to see him get a chance over Williams. I think Williams could be sent down. Williams would also have to be DFA/clear waivers in order to be sent down. Don't mistake me saying that for me suggesting it would be a bad thing if someone else claimed him on waivers though. Just a statement of fact.

6/24 Games
QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 09:04 PM) I'm not worried about him yet, he's had success at every level so far, if he's still batting .211 at the end of the season then there's reason for concern Really, there's no more reason for concern if that winds up being the case than there was about D1: the Pitching Danks having an ERA above 4 his first time in AA. He blew through the level he was supposed to be at this year...there are very few things that can make me actually concerned about him this year.

Your religion or your livelihood.....
QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 08:35 PM) As is every other employer who has employees on any government program. The only difference between Walmart and othere employers is Walmart actually helps employees learn about those programs. Other employers don't care enough to let their employees know about those programs, or don't bother to find out. If we want to help the working poor, the programs are good, if we don't get rid of the program but let;s not have the program and complain when people use it. Again, I use University Financial Aid offices as another Walmart type company that encourages people to apply for government assistance programs. Would you also fault them for relying on government programs instead of lowering tuition? One plausible response to that argument Tex is that the goverment is actually going out of its way to encourage college education as a method for improving society...because it's generally thought that increasing education levels promotes better lives and a stronger economy. Thus, it makes sense for the government to be doing exactly that because there is a general benefit to society, and the college is actually helping the government achieve its goal. OTOH, the idea behind food stamps, for example, is to provide food assistance to people who are in need, not to give lower paying employers a method to undercut their competition.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 06:19 PM) Evidently there is a rumor out there that Deng could be headed to the Clippers or Kings for cap space. Would give the Bulls 2 full max contracts, plus around 9 mill for a 3rd guy. I believe I read somewhere that the Kings were a serious option for the Hinrich deal as well.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 06:07 PM) I can't remember the last time that the Sox pursued an experienced MLB closer through FA. I imagine that it'll be either Thornton or Santos next year. It's too bad that Kenny didn't get Putz to sign a team option for 2011. He's been looking like the dominant 2007 Putz. I doubt that Putz would have given anything close to a reasonable option, because he likely wants to cash in as a closer in the offseason. He could be talking about maybe even an 8-10 million a year deal if someone is really after a closer, if he comes up with this kind of season at the end of the year.
