  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 12:04 PM) Until Curt Flood, there was no reason to pay a player higher, because no one else could. The end of the reserve clause changed all of that. Anyone else think that might have been the single worst thing to happen to the game of baseball? There are now probably 10 places that know they will never win a World Series. 10? Seems a little high.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 12:19 PM) Relax, I have all of the serial numbers filed off so they can't be traced anyway. But it can't be that simple, can it?
  3. QUOTE (3E8 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 11:36 AM) That's the allure. You can make any game 10x more exciting if you've got money riding on it What some would call "exciting," I'd call nerve-wracking.
  4. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 02:02 AM) None. They'll all be traded for guys who were in the All-Star game in 1999. QFT.
  5. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 03:54 PM) He was still the lead off hitter for a the division winning twins. Juan also got on base more than Elvis Andrus. I gotta say it in every post so you guys dont bring out the walk cards on my argument....he needs to take more walks though but by no means does he need to be benched like what was said before. He wasn't saying that he needs to be benched. He was saying that, even if the Sox had three better OF's than Pierre, he would still like to have him on the team. The only other spot would be on the bench.
  6. QUOTE (balfanman @ Oct 15, 2010 -> 09:11 AM) I really don't understand all of the Juan Pierre hate. Sure, he isn't Rickey Henderson, but who is. Personally I think that Juan played some pretty good defense, can play at least adequate CF if needed, and hit okay for a lead off guy. He seems to be will liked in the clubhouse and leads by example with his work ethic. He came up with quite a few clutch hits this last season as I recall. He started out slow, but I would hardly call Juan Pierre the reason for any of our offensive woes. I would love to have a team where we could bat Juan 9th, but we don't, nor are we likely to have (afford) one in the near future. I'm sure there are a few guys out there who are better lead off guys, but I don't think any of them were on our team last year, nor are they likely to be on the Sox in 2011. As for Derek Jeter, I'm sure that he has some qualities that the Yankees love and does some things better than Juan, but usually there is nothing but hate for Jeter on this board because he seems to be so overated, especially defensively. It seems to me that if Jeter were on the Sox he wouldn't even have a place to play according to most here because Ramirez is a much better shortstop. All of this is JMHO of course, but I for one have no problem mentioning Juan Pierre and Derek Jeter in the same sentence as far as overall baseball abilities. The main thing that Jeter has going for him is that he plays in New York, for the Yankees. O. K., I've said my peace, Flame away. "Rickey Henderson is Rickey Henderson," says Rickey Henderson. Also, Jeter is overrated defensively. Offensively (aside from this year), he's every bit as good as advertised.
  7. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 01:13 AM) But not every first round pick even makes the majors. The Sox have had first round picks that had less impact than Sale already has. That's not a very good argument, as the Sox drafted guys with less than first-round talent for a long time in the first round.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 14, 2010 -> 06:10 PM) Money is a big part of it, especially if its the White Sox and not the Yankees or Boston. Quentin made $3.2 million this year, and a lot of this board hated him. They want him gone. Dunn gives you a little bit more than Quentin did this year. About 10 more homers, about .050 in OBP, he hit about .020 better and about 100 more strikeouts. As much as several here say they would love him, he would be quickly turned on, especially considering the kind of money he's going to make. Thome hit a lot of homers with the Sox, yet people were doing cartwheels when he left. Dunn offensively isn't too much different from what Thome gave you with the Sox his last 3 seasons. Edwin Jackson, pro-rated, had the best numbers of any Sox pitcher, yet people around here are crying about his $8.5 million price tag. Two things: 1.) You're making it seem like everyone wanted Thome gone. 2.) Why do you keep using the morons who wanted Thome gone as the basis for why we shouldn't get Dunn?
  9. I'm so glad betting doesn't interest me at all. I know quite a few people that have to bet on everything, and I have no idea how they can do it. I feel like I'd be on edge all of the time.
  10. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 08:58 AM) The fad to hate on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is played out. I remember comments that this week's episode wasn't good. How is that possible? It was absolutely hilarious through multiple viewings! Fad, my ass. The first, second, and fourth episodes were not good. It's not a fad to dislike something that isn't good. The third and most recent episodes were good. QUOTE (The Gooch @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 02:08 AM) The preview to next week's Boardwalk Empire looked intense The ending to last night's episode was great, the raid and Nucky subsequently hooking up with Mrs. Schroeder. You could cut that sexual tension with a knife. I knew that had to be coming sooner or later.

    Dexter

I'm fairly certain they introduced that female hispanic cop just to kill her off later in the season.
  12. I watched Misery yesterday. I'm the first to admit that I'm a chauvinist and women acting never seem as good to me as their male counterparts, but Kathy Bates was incredible in it. Also, does Rob Reiner ever make a bad movie?
  13. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 15, 2010 -> 08:49 PM) Agreed on the Gemma/Tara spotlight, just not that entertaining to me. The Unser thing could get veryyyy interesting IMO, but was up with the bond hearing (or whatever it's called) getting pushed back, was that a favor Unser did or did it occur somehow else. I don't think they explained it yet. I would have to guess it was Stahl, but not entirely sure.
  14. Jackass 3D was funny as hell, although it is much more graphic in many ways than the rest.
  15. I feel awful for Hudson each time I see somebody say "he was terrible with us," since the guy pitched 3 games. Christ, it was 3 games straight out of the minors. Can somebody post the stats from each of those 3 games?
  16. Guys, I thought Iowa was supposed to be the worst?
  17. QUOTE (3E8 @ Oct 14, 2010 -> 08:47 AM) Agree with Md. It was much like his standup, not clever and just going for some cheap laughs Well, I actually enjoyed the couple standups I've seen of him. And I've enjoyed his characters on Grandma's Boy and Reno 911!, but maybe he's only funny in small doses.
  18. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 13, 2010 -> 09:21 PM) They're rebooting everything - again. Jeez, enough is enough.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 13, 2010 -> 08:22 PM) Rhys Ifans confirmed as the villain The Lizard in the Spiderman reboot What happened to Dylan Baker?
  20. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 13, 2010 -> 04:45 PM) I don't try to bring it up when possible, but the trade is relevant to everything in this offseason because of the financial standpoint of the organization. Plus, people still don't seem to understand the ramifications of the move, and firmly believe that it must've been right because Kenny made the move. I'm sorry, that's bulls*** and people should get called out for it. It's one thing to have faith in your org's leadership, it's another to not even think of the ramifications. And as usual, I will point out that I wasn't against trading for Jackson, but the price we paid which ended up in this argument. For what it's worth, I completely agree with your side of the argument. The problem is that there are only like four threads in PHT that have had discussions in them since the end of the season, and this argument is making me want to stop reading those last few that exist.
  21. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 13, 2010 -> 04:47 PM) Exactly. People are forgetting about the log-jam at 1B they have. I don't think Votto is as untradeable as ya'll are making him out to be. They need pitching. Despite all of Quentin's issues this year he did put up 26/87/.342. That .342 is pretty remarkable to me considering the season he had. Replacement level my ass. He's got horseloads of value based on results AND potential still. Ok, so say the Reds wanted to cash in on Votto's year, you think they'd rather want unproven Beckham over Danks/Quentin? They would want somebody to mash in Votto's place; that ain't Beckham. The Reds have to trade somebody to get pitching. Alonso doesn't get you near top flight pitching. Votto gets you anything. So does Danks/Quentin I feel. This won't happen, I realize this, but this is the type of player we should be targeting with a Danks-based package. No, they really won't
  22. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 13, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) Nope, I don't understand the side in which giving up Hudson for Jackson was a good move. Not saying I wouldn't have traded Hudson at all. But for career mediocrity? Failure on KW's part. You don't agree with the logic, but you obviously have to know what the arguments are. They are the same each time, and it just keeps getting stated and stated, over and over, day after day, week after week, etc.
  23. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 13, 2010 -> 12:22 PM) Wait what? I'm not seeing what you're trying to point out. Your signature.
