  1. Seems like a low risk move. The way things are going, he could be one of the starting five by Spring Training.
  2. Here is an interesting tidbit about Floyd from CNNSI: The Sox hire a former Phillies exec then execute a trade with the same team. Just speculation, but maybe Amaro gave KW some valuable information about Floyd that would make him believe he had more value than others were stating.
  3. QUOTE(soxfan3530 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 06:18 AM) hey when i left for the bars there was a dispute about if rowand was involved in the trade for garcia. since i dont feel like reading through 43 pages could someone update me on the trade. please god tell me there is a spin off trade involved!!! Freddy Garcia for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez. No more, no less.
  4. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:59 AM) Everyone who was clamoring for nothing but prospects should be happy with this. I, for one, who think spects are overrated, am not happy The media is now talking about how the Phils now have the market for SPs and will dangle Lieber for middle-to-back end relief, etc. So we will see what they end up with for Lieber who is a notch down from Garcia. If they get more value for him, KW made a rash decision here. Also, KW mentioned that he was not going to talk about extensions for one of his SPs. Can it be assumed that this is Mark and we will see an extension shortly?
  5. Another LF off the board. Lieberthal hit .286 vs LHP in 2006. I thought he would have been a decent backup to AJ, especially for only $1.25 million. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2688711
  6. The Sox traded Morse, Olivo and Jeremy Reed for Garcia. They trade Rowand, Gio, and Haigwood for Thome and $$$. Then trade Garcia for Gio and Floyd. So in essence, the moves end up like this: Rowand, Haigwood, Morse, Olivo and Jeremy Reed for Thome, $$$, and Floyd. The only thing I do not understand is if Garcia was the best rotation arm on the trade market, and the Phils zeroed in on Garcia from the start, how could KW only walk away with Gio and Floyd? It is not a horrible move, but it does seem like KW could have gotten more for Garcia.
  7. Bonds is not leaving the left coast.
  8. QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 05:44 AM) This was in yesterday's Toronto Sun: Prospects? They never said how many. More than one would equate to prospects.
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 06:22 PM) Yahoo reports Mets talked to the Sox today about Garcia. and Vazquez.
  10. If this was to happen, it would equate to: Garcia, Gio, Haigwood for Thome, Madson/Floyd I would think KW could get more for Garcia.
  11. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 03:28 PM) I thought IMHO stands for in my humble opinion. It does, however some say it has morphed to "honest", and both are now widely used.
  12. That was also mentioned in the Southtown on Sunday: Working out 4 hours a day and in the best shape of his life. Definitely good to hear. http://www.dailysouthtown.com/sports/158444,031spt2.article
  13. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 12:56 PM) I don't think so, but I think it would be a good starting point for negotiations. 5/65 is more than Carpenter got for his extension. I don't think KW is going to pay Mark more than that.
  14. QUOTE(GreenSox @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 09:14 AM) Chone Figgins is a high end utility player. We trade one of the best gloves in the game who also has power for a player who doesn't play good defense and can't get on base. (the pitcher part of this is basically a wash; but the 3B part, we get slaughtered). Rob M for Figgins would be a fairer deal. I agree. Garcia for Santana is a wash, and Crede for Figgins straight up would be ridiculous. I don't think this deal will happen unless there is more involved.
  15. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 01:42 AM) I have just a few more fun Scott Podsednik stats before I call it a night. Out of all the players in major league baseball last season who had atleast 465 ABs and 12 SB (35 players) only 3 had a lower OBP than Scott Podsednik's .330 (B. Phillips, J. Barfield, Pr. Wilson.) Out of all the players in major league baseball last season who had atleast 465 ABs and 12 SB (35 players) only one player had a lower SB% than Scott Podsednik's 67.8% (T. Hunter.) Out of all the players in major league baseball last season who had atleast 465 ABs and 9 SB (54 players) only one player had a lower batting average than Scott Podsednik's .261 (A. Everett.) Out of all the players in major league baseball last season who had atleast 465 ABs and 9 SB (54 players) only two player had less total bases than Scott Podsednik's 185 (A. Everett, W. Taveras.) There's more but I'll end it right there. Those stats don't really say that much. Everyone knows Pods sucked last year, but you are comparing him to guys like ARod, Carlos Lee, Soriano with those parameters. Try comparing him with guys that are more similar to him: J. Pierre .330 OBP, 58/78 SBs C. Figgins .336 OBP, 52/68 SBs D. Roberts .360 OBP, 49/55 SBs C. Patterson .314 OBP, 45/54 SBs S. Podsednik .330 OBP, 40/59 SBs R. Freel .363 OBP, 37/48 SBs W. Taveras .333 OBP, 33/42 SBs K. Lofton .360 OBP, 32/37 SBs C. Crisp .317 OBP, 22/26 SBs J. Gathright .321 OBP, 22/31 SBs P. Wilson .307 OBP, 12/14 SBs Only 3 have a significantly higher OBP (Roberts, Freel , Lofton), while 4 are lower. He is about the middle of the pack for OBP. His SB% did suck in 2006 (67.8%), but that was only 4.2% worse than 2005, which is a difference of only 2 SBs. The funny thing is most of the Sox were horrible at SBs in 2006: Ozuna 6/12, Iguchi 11/16, Anderson 4/11. Maybe Raines not at 1B had some effect on this. The only bright spots in that area were Gload 6/6, Dye 7/10, Cintron 10/13, and Konerko 1/1. There is no denying Pods sucked last year, but there are very few upgrades that will improve that position even marginally. I am more concerned about his Defense than I am about his Offensive production. If he has a year somewhere between 05 and 06 at the plate (.275BA/.340OBP/50SB) in 07, that would be sufficient.
  16. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 04:13 PM) I thought they were in Naples. I think they are in Lake Buena Vista (Orlando), FL.
  17. I thought it might be a good idea to start a Winter Meetings thread to post all the little snippets of info that becomes available in one place. Here is an update from Aaron Gleeman's blog (2:20pm) from Rotoworld: http://www.rotoworld.com/content/features/...articleid=27213
  18. I would love for this deal to happen. Crede's back is still a huge question mark and A-Rod would make the lineup one of the most potent in history. He also rakes at the Cell. Here are his numbers from 04-06 there: 34 AB, 3 R, 14 H, 2 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 6 BB, 3 SB .412/.500/.647/1.147 From NYY standpoint, you get a huge upgrade at SP and a Defensive upgrade at 3B, with a slight decline in offensive output. Crede-Jeter-Cano would be a solid defensive infield.
  19. QUOTE(gosox41 @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 10:22 AM) If T ed Lily is turning down 4 year $37 million contract offers it tells me that KW needs to trade 2 starters and max out on the insanity out there. This is a golden situation that doesn't come very often. First trade I'd make is the Garcia/Crede for Figgins and Santana. It leaves the Sox with 6 starters and adds more speed to the line up. Ozzie wanted more speed on this team last season and now he will have it. It also frees up $10 mill to fill other holes like the stealth bullpen the Sox need. I would actually flip Santana to Tampa Bay instead of trading McCarthy if the Garcia/Crede deal went thru.
  20. QUOTE(The Critic @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 11:04 AM) You traded McCarthy. He traded him in #1 not #2.
  21. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article...rtnered=rss_cws After reading the article it seems like B-Mac to Charlotte or back to the Bullpen is a real possibility for 2007:

Wow, a full 4 year no trade clause on top of it. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2674398

QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Nov 22, 2006 -> 01:53 PM) there's been some speculation about the Sox making a deal with the D-Rays for Carl Crawford. If they did trade for Crawford (say McCarthy/Fields or Vazquez/Fields, etc) would you give Podsednik a chance to play CF instead of Anderson. Thus the lineup would be... 1) Crawford-LF 2) Iguchi-2B 3) Dye-RF 4) Thome-DH 5) Konerko-1B 6) AJ-C 7) Crede-3B 8) Uribe-SS 9) Podsednik-CF I know the Crawford isn't your typical leadoff hitter (with his power) however the .348 OBP and 58 SB would be a nice tablesetter for Iguchi, Dye and Thome. Plus with Podsednik hitting 9th, his speed followed up by Crawford's speed and average could produce a lot of runs. Personally I'd rather have Podsednik hitting 9th and playing CF than Anderson doing the same. I would love for the Sox to nab Crawford, but I don't think the Sox will give up B-Mac because he gives them payroll flexibility, and I don't think the D-Rays would take Vazquez because of his salary. Either way, Pods will not be starting in CF in 2007.
  24. I think the Sox will re-up Buehrle, almost out of necessity. He is the only LHSP on the team. The only other scenario is if the Sox pick someone up like Willis who is still under Arb via trade within the next year. Here is the FA Crop for LHSP in 2007: Jeremy Affeldt Mark Buerhle Doug Davis Casey Fossum Randy Johnson Eric Milton Odalis Perez Kenny Rogers Glendon Rusch
  25. MVP

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 03:30 PM) Why didn't Michael Jordan win the MVP award every year? What were his winshares and VORP? What are you guys arguing about, exactly? Give it a rest. It's meaningless. No arguing here. The MVP should go to the best player, and Morneau was not even the best player on his team. At least AJ got a vote!
