Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (WBWSF @ Sep 11, 2017 -> 04:08 PM) 1) Reed is only 29 years old. 2) Reed is better than anybody the team has now in the bullpen, which isn't saying much. This has now become the worse White Sox bullpen since 1970. Until the Sox need a good bullpen, they aren't going to spend money on one. They may go dumpster diving for arms this winter, but they aren't spending big money until they know A.) they will be good enough to need to spent, and B.) which starters are going to fail and get used in the pen, and which of these arms acquired as relievers will be able to stick out there. The market for Addy Reed is far from the store the Sox will be shopping in this winter. He is more of the Macy's market, while the White Sox will be garage sailing.

Tim Anderson
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Sep 11, 2017 -> 12:12 PM) Let me just pile on the praise for the young man -- he's been really good in the last two months and it's been all around, with the glove too. He's always going to be a guy that relies on his BA to drive his offensive value (and will run hot and cold) but he has to be a consistent, average defender at SS to be a starter even when his bat is scuffling. He has the potential to be much more than a 1-2 WAR player. But for now I'm happy to see him looking like a decent regular again. I believe someone used the defensive comp of Jose Valentin. If not, I would make it myself. Both are extremely toolsy, possess great instincts, a lightning quick first step, but lack fundamental technique and maybe some focus at times. Both can make the spectacular play and then let a ball go through their legs on the next play. They both have great arms, and because of that don't square up, set and throw, leading to bad arm angles and path throw paths at times. The tools are there for Anderson to be a + defensive SS, he just had to put the work in and fix some of the technique problems he has. Otherwise he will always a sporadic defensive SS.

Ongoing storm disaster thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 11, 2017 -> 12:05 PM) Florida got really lucky that Cuba took a big chunk out of Irma and that it ended up pushing back east rather than riding up the whole coast. Glad the damage there seems relatively limited, even if there are a whole lot of people without power right now. We saw what this storm was capable of on some of the other islands. Plus the track it took over florida kept it from recharging at all. 50 miles either direction and we are talking about a much bigger beast.

Jose Abreu with 1st Sox cycle in 17 years
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 11, 2017 -> 09:47 AM) Yeah, really the only critical talk is around his defense. Most on this board are Abreu fans. You can't help but love his bat, except for maybe April. But he does nothing but hit the rest of the year. The defense? Well let me just note for the record that we traded/drafted for a decent amount of guys who play 1B...

Tim Anderson
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Sep 11, 2017 -> 09:26 AM) Anderson is hitting .297/.311/.559 (126 wRC+) with a .262 ISO since the beginning of August (148 PA), and his BABIP is a not too outlandish .360 over that time for a guy with his speed. Got his WAR back into positive territory after yesterday's game. I said it in a post in a different thread last week, but his defense has also stepped way back up. Anderson had 22 errors over 91 games in April through July. In the 35 games since he has a total of 4 errors.

Jose Abreu with 1st Sox cycle in 17 years
QUOTE (Tony @ Sep 10, 2017 -> 09:40 AM) I'll actually be a little disappointed if Abreu is traded in the offseason. I still don't think he brings back an impressive package, and has more value to the White Sox than any other team. Agreed. With what players in his genre are going for on the market, I'd rather keep him risking getting nothing for him.

Jose Abreu with 1st Sox cycle in 17 years
Really happy to see Jose do something like this and get some national love. The guy is so underappreciated around the game, and one of my favorite players in a while. A true leader and a great example for the kids.

Petricka to the DL
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 9, 2017 -> 04:37 PM) Jones also only appeared in two games in 2014 and 19 in 2015. Robin was the manager in those years. Perhaps the 135 appearances the previous two years plus the number of times he had to warm up had something to do with it. My point was how many times did we see Ventura use three, at times four pitchers to get through an inning? He was strictly by the book / match-up's as a manager. And it hurt him and the team in my opinion. If you are a major league pitcher you should be able to get left handers out, right handers out, even if a guy hits with his feet...you should be able to get them out. But with Robin the vast majority of the time he never gave his guys a chance to do that. Except you are no where close to reality. In 2014, the White Sox were #24 in games pitched in with 453. The leader Cleveland had 573. 2015 had the White Sox dead last (#30) at 414, trailing the leading Colorado who had 584. 2016 the White Sox were #24 again with 481. The irony of course is that once Ventura left in 2017 the Sox current ranking through right now is #14. Both in appearances by individuals and by team rankings, the Sox were super low in bullpen usage.

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Sep 9, 2017 -> 01:09 PM) I haven't seen one poster who has said Moncada is doomed, merely that there's concern. You guys are also conflating things. Yes "x type of players have had big slumps", but it can also be true that "x types of slumps are more correlated with hitters who end up struggling". They're obviously not mutually exclusive. As multiple people talk about him quitting switch hitting...

My totally biased review of Giolito's performance tonight
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 9, 2017 -> 07:55 AM) Giolito standing up for himself when an umpire is having a bad game is hardly the same as Sale having a fashion hissy fit Or going by himself to the opponents lockerroom to apparently fight the whole KC team.

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 9, 2017 -> 12:17 PM) It was 19 ABs for a kid who wasn't even MLB ready, and everybody knew it. There are so many 19 AB sample sizes where all-stars hit .000/.100/.000 or bad hitters hit .474/.524/.788. At the end of the day, those 19 ABs will be something like 2 tenths of a percentage point of his career. All you have to do is look at Robin Ventura's 0-41 as a rookie to know that Moncada isn't doomed to death.

Petricka to the DL
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 9, 2017 -> 10:30 AM) To be fair, they would've had more without their in-season DL stints What DL stints they have those years?

Petricka to the DL
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 8, 2017 -> 10:55 PM) You wonder if the way they were abused under Ventura if that's part of the reason they can't stay healthy if their lives depended on it. Petricka had 67 and 62 appearances in '14 and '15, Putnam had 49 each in back to back seasons. Jones is even a stretch at 65 and 70. Jones wasn't a top 10 usage pitcher in either year.... let alone Petricka and Putnam..

Soxtalk posters spends years begging for a rebuild, and then lasts about as long as a Mike Pelfrey start before pissing down their collective legs in panic. This process is going to take years. If you are panicking now, find a new hobby.

Sox not in teams watching Otani
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 8, 2017 -> 04:11 PM) Right, $300k is what I meant by "penalty box money." It's possible that he literally doesn't care about money at ALL and would sign for the minimum, but unless (1) the Sox are the ONLY team that will let him hit, or (2) he's REALLY excited about being part of a rebuild, we don't have anything to offer him that another more popular and more competitive team couldn't top. Yeah, I can't see any scenario where Otani signs here. We have nothing to offer him. No money, and no immediate chance to win. Even if he falls in love with Chicago, a team like the Cubs is a better fit.
