NYT: Red Sox used Apple Watch to steal signs from Yankees
Wow, this could get interesting. I wonder what the penalty for that even would be?

2018 MLB Draft
QUOTE (Superstar Lamar @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 02:57 PM) The Cubs drafted Schwarber 4th overall knowing he probably couldn't catch and without any defensive position. The valuation of hitter only players has changed a lot since then.

Holland released, Fry called up, Moncada activated.
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 01:22 PM) Was that the worst pitching season by a White Sox starter ever? Plus he was an absolute asshole on top of being f***ing awful. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/navarja01.shtml

Relationship Advice Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 11:22 AM) It's amazing what teams or people will do if you just reach out to them. When someone I know got married a few years back, he sent an email to James Cornelison asking if he would sing. Showed up and did the ceremony pro bono. I have gotten to meet Governors, Senators and others by doing exactly that.

Fry is a shock. Holland I am only surprised it took so long.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 11:37 AM) Earned that callup via a 1.6 WHIP in AAA. Gross. He earned a call up in the same way that most of the White Sox bullpen did... by having everyone good traded away, and not having anyone else to put in the pen.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) Because Japan isn't as quick to pull the trigger. China would wipe them out without a second thought. It's better to anger a more democratic nation that will try to work things out. Today, sure. But getting Japan to start building a military again? A potential challenger to Chinese military dominance in the region, with the full support of arch-enemy America? Its stupid. You would think China would realize it too and do something to put a foot down.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 11:01 AM) I don't know if it goes back to this, but Japan had a pretty brutal colonial rule over Korea for the first half of the 20th century. I get the history, but Japan hasn't fired a shot in anger since 1945. It is one thing to be really bitter about that, but it is quite another to be opening the door to giving them a reason to need a legitimate military again. I would think that is the last think that NK wants. Yet, they keep firing missiles over their territory.

Avi Hot streak
I don't know how to prove it or not, but to me, Avi just seems to swing harder this year. It looks to me like instead of seeming unsure about himself from pitch to pitch in years past, he is just airing it out on each swing. If he hits it, he hits it harder.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
The one thing this is going to end up causing is the re-militarization of Japan. Maybe it is cultural something that I am missing, but I don't get why NK keeps trying to include Japan in this mess, but all they are going to achieve is to have one more set of guns aimed at them.

NCAA basketball thread 2017-18
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 08:17 AM) His decommitment letter sounded a lot like Torrence Watson, which has rumors swirling that OHio State was told they couldn't sign him due to some rule that no one knows. I know this because people say it may apply to Mizzou. I don't know if it's illegal contact or what, but I wonder if DePaul was told if they take this guy they could be in trouble. Especially since it's all the LaLumiere guys suddenly cooling. I know he was looking to reclassify to a year earlier, I wonder if something happened around that.

Avi Hot streak
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 10:07 AM) This year was chalk full of disappointing players from the 2008 draft suddenly doing well. Baseball is weird. I have to say it's a great message that Avi and Jose come to camp in shape and have such good and healthy years. Sets a good tone for moving forward. The big lesson here is that a guy like Yoan Moncada IS a guy who could take 2 to 3 years, maybe more, to start to get it. He has some pretty decent holes in his game that he will have to address going forward if he wants to hit his ceiling.

Avi Hot streak
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 09:08 AM) It's hard to look at Avi's advance stats and find anything to attribute this too, except he has been healthier this year and always has had hot BABIP streaks, he makes pretty good contact. He may end september on a cold streak. I think his ZIPs of .280/.330/.450 is Avi Garcia, and even with improved defense he's like a 2ish WAR player. No one to extend, no one you'll get much back for. He's settled in and that's good. BUT, if there is a backbreaking justification for why he may have higher BABIP than others, his spray charts are impressively all over the field. I believe he is played straight up traditional defensive alignment. WE've heard that teams care less about defense for players now that they can shift better to protect them from poor range. Maybe Avi will have a better BABIP than others because he has to get played straight up, and teams have put worse defenders out there to get more offense in game. But I don't really believe that. That said, let's just enjoy Avi doing well. Some players will fall through the cracks of good right now or good for future. He'll play for us for 2 more years and probably be gone. That's okay. I will say this much. This year by Avi is exactly why you don't rush to dump high ceiling young players if they aren't successful in a short to immediate time frame.

9/3 Games
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 05:13 AM) I'm sure if there was a better deal or if Hahn could have gotten more he would have. Personally, I wouldn't have been willing to give up as much as the Sox received. I just don't see the additional value in Robertson/Frazier/Kahnle that others do. Peeling the layers apart, players that fell into Frazier category had zero value. Even a guy like JD Martinez who is twice the hitter that Frazier has been brought back garbage from a bad minor league system. Kahnle was the big value in that deal. The White Sox didn't want to package players, but this is what brought them their main target.

Avi Hot streak
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 4, 2017 -> 08:51 PM) He started the season very hot but every month his BA declined so right before the trade deadline is when he bottomed out. Everyone around here was saying there's the regression we have been predicting. Then August came and he hits .423 for the month. His slugging wasn't as high as April but the OBP was higher so OPS ended up close to the same for both months. Over 1.000 . It is also worth pointing out that his worst stretch also overlapped his injury before he went on the DL.

2018 MLB Draft
It will be interesting. With the value that has been placed on players that can even play a minimal amount of defense, versus those who play none, or even are a negative defender, I would bet that Beer takes a spill in the draft... [/beer puns]

Avi Hot streak
QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 4, 2017 -> 10:33 AM) I agree with you, which is why it makes even less sense to try and force him onto a market that doesn't value him. One thing I have learned with Rick Hahn, he isn't going to force anything. I have been amazed at how long he will wait on the market to come to him. If he doesn't get value from Avi, he WILL be our opening day RF in 2018.

Avi Hot streak
I will say this much. I don't think most of baseball has bought in to Avi Garcia yet, or someone would have offered enough to pry him away from the Sox during the firesale. I am not quite sure if he is a victim of the lack of value in offensive only players that happened this year, or if it is more of just no believing in him as of yet. It will be interesting to see what his value is during the winter.
