Rating Coop
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 04:46 PM) My point goes back to my first post, the undying love for Don Cooper is the exact opposite from any other White Sox non player. I have stated numerous times in this thread, I think he is fine. But it's like no pitcher would ever have success if Coop wasn't the pitching coach. I give the players more credit for being successful. If it all was about Coop wisdom, and not talent and execution, Coop would have had a better pitching career himself. I don't think if he quit at the end of the season the team ERA would be a run lower next year because of it. I also don't think it would be a run higher. Why does an answer about Don Cooper have to run through everyone else's opinions and every other coach we've had? Its like you are still fighting the fight over the Greg Walker days.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 04:18 PM) What? I've read this 3 times and don't understand it. Houston was supposed to play Texas at Houston the next few days, with a return series in Arlington in Sept. The Astros seemed to want to swap home fields (Texas this week, Houston in Sept) but Texas refused countering that they would play in Arlington as the visiting team. Instead the next series is being played in Tampa.

Rating Coop
QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 04:04 PM) So he can't be one of the better coaches in the league if he isn't 100% successful? Age and injuries do take their toll as well. Nah, he needs more fistshaking and Cooper-hatred apparently.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 03:42 PM) My guess is that he is referring to Tyrion looking upset/concerned by the Jon/Dany alone time. I didn't get any betrayal vibes from that though. Unless he is referring to the end clip where it shows him splitting town on a ship to who-knows-where.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 12:34 PM) Considering some of the employees that seem to qualify as a job for life under the Reinsdorfs, it's not necessarily a ringing endorsement. Ozzie would still be managing if he didn't set it on fire. Robin would still be managing if he wanted. Not many people are asked to leave. And this conversation was a response to a response to my post as to why I find it odd Don Cooper is bulletproof to most White Sox fans, considering who they have layed blame about failure and given credit for success for everything else. Again, I don't have a problem with him, but the fawning over him any time a pitcher does well is something I find curious. Except no one has worked nearly as long as Cooper.

Rating Coop
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 12:18 PM) It is fair, but my point is if a pitcher thrives, it always seems to come back to Cooper. If he doesn't, hey, the guy sucks, KW should never have acquired him...Coop can't get through to everybody. Some guys would still be good pitchers if Nardi Contreras came back. I don't mind Cooper, and despite what some may think, really never have. I have just marveled at the double standard some have with other coaches and managers. They are blamed for suck, Coop can only overcome it. It is never his fault. And considering he is probably the least fan friendly of all of them, it just seems a bit weird. If these coaches had as big of an influence of a guy being a star or out of the league in a year or 2, they would make more money thant the players. You are taking what fans think and turning it into some sort of meaning for his actual body of work. None of what fans think actually matters. As to the last part, Don Cooper basically has worked himself into a job for life while managers, general managers, and coaches have come and gone. I'd say that telling each new manager that Don Cooper is your pitching coach is a pretty clear indictment of what the White Sox top management thinks of what Cooper has done during his body of work here.

Yurchak promotion?
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 11:13 AM) Theres no place to promote him to. Burger just got to Kanny and will finish the season there, filling 3B, Remillard moved over to 2B to make room for Burger, Sheets has 1B, and the Sox have four OF's - Rutherford, Call, Adolfo, and Gonzalez that need regular at bats. There just isnt a spot for him there now, and no one from that group is really ready to take the next step up. Burger probably goes to WS to start the year next season and Yurchak starts in Kanny. Realistically we'll see what a guy like Yurchak can do once he hits full season ball. There is a long line of college guys who destroy rookie ball, only to see that catch up with them once they hit A ball. Though I will say I remember Hoestetler being absolutely thrilled to get the guy in the 12th round. He was one of the guys that he mentioned by name.

8/27 White Sox Winner and recent run of solid pitching
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 10:04 PM) Over the last 20 games the Sox have gone 11-9. They just concluded an 8 home stand going 5-3 . The recent run is because of solid pitching mostly from Rodon, Gonzalez and Shields and a surprising decent run from the bullpen. It has also coincided with a hot streak from Nicky Delmonico to offset games missed from Matt Davidson who proves his worth with a 3 run bomb in today's win. Tim Anderson and Yolmer Sanchez have contributed walk off hits in this stretch . Matt Davidson had 2 walk off hits in a row right before this 20 game stretch so the Sox have been playing some exciting baseball. Reynaldo Lopez had a solid debut in a game the Sox eventually won. Lucas Giolito has had a solid and very good start going 1-1 in his 2 starts. They won the series against the Tigers without help from Delmonico and Moncada who both were placed on the DL prior to the series . Moncada also had been playing some exciting ball recently showing off the wheels and contributing to late inning wins. It's probably no coincidence that the Sox bullpen has improved with the good starting pitching easing the bullpen load. Over his last 58 AB's Avi Garcia has 25 hits for a .431 batting average .493 OBP . 500 SLG and ,993 OPS . Avi has been reduced to a singles hitter during this span with only 4 doubles in those 25 hits . This is probably due to recent hand/wrist injuries . Give him credit though . Right when he was slumping and average creeping back toward .300 he has upped it back to .322 . In the last 30 games who is leading the Sox in RBI ? In the unlikely event you guessed Yolmer Sanchez you would be right. Yolmer went 3/4 driving in a run in the Sox 7-1 victory against the Tigers today. His last 7 games he has 3 HR and 9 RBI and also has raised his OPS on the season to over .700 . Jose Abreu has been the rock of the lineup hitting HR's and fielding much better the 2nd half of the season. I know it sucks for draft pick position but when the young guys contribute to victories I can't be unhappy about it. I've spent my whole life cheering for Sox wins and it's just counter-intuitive to do otherwise. Besides I know I am not alone here in wanting these youngsters to experience the thrills of victories and growing together. This is a great example of why these next couple of seasons aren't nearly as easy as being happy about losing 120 games. Getting progress out of a guy like Giolito is so massive for the future of this franchise. The same goes for about half of the roster.

Rating Coop
QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 11:05 AM) I do give some credit for Chris Sale to Cooper for two reasons. The first is that they drafted him with the intention of keeping him as a starter. Cooper had input on this and many other organizations wouldn't. The secondis allowing Sale to retain his scary mechanics and working with them. This again was not tge path that many other organizations would have taken. Cooper is not bulletproof but his successes compared to most other coaches should have hi about as close as one can be. Just like anything, no one is going to have 100% good or bad. I do think when compared to contemporaries Cooper has an enviable record. Chris Sale and even more than Sale, Jose Quintana, are great feathers to have in your cap. There are plenty of other examples of guys he has turned around. Sure there are guys that he couldn't get through to, but there are plenty of those around sports in general. Take a Jay Cutler. The dude had Hall of Fame potential, but no coach could get through to him. Does that mean all of the coaches that had him were failures?

Sunday Baseball for the Sox Faithful
QUOTE (Dunt @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 09:06 AM) Not necessarily. With Giolito's size and the plane at which he attacks hitters, 92 mph can be very deceptive. He had a lot of guys swinging through fastballs yesterday. I will happily take a Giolito who is sitting 92-94 with his fastball if it means that he is throwing his offspeed stuff for strikes (which he did with regularity yesterday). His changeup is still a bit of a work in progress and can be a little straight for my liking, but he has been fooling a lot of hitters with it so far through 2 starts. The curveball is as good as advertised when he is throwing it for strikes/burying it as a put away pitch. I think the pitch of his I've been most impressed with is his slider though. He was painting it low and outside all yesterday and if he lives there with it, Gio is going to have a very long, productive career at the major league level. I'm very encouraged with what I've seen so far from him, his approach is very mature for his age. And from the looks of it, if Giolito needs to pull back on his stuff a little bit to gain some control and feel, he can survive pretty darned well against even a good offensive team. As he keeps getting his reps and locking in his mechanics, he can always add back as needed or wanted.

Delmonico scratched from line up
QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 06:51 PM) I also think the Sox have been unusually conservative by their own standards. Rodon and others have missed more time or been placed on the DL that in a year where they wanted to be competitive would have been handled differently. Yeah, with the 10 day DL, a lot of guys who might have missed 5 days are going on to the DL with the new structure. With the 15 day DL, guys would just eat the 5 days so they could have them back for the other 10. Reynaldo Lopez is a perfect example of a guy who might have missed a start, but wouldn't have gone to the DL last year.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 03:07 PM) If you're in Houston yeah, basically at this point hunker down. Any decision you make is a poor one. If you are leaving your house it's a poor decision, so staying better be a worse decision. It would have made a freeway mess on Friday, but Houston's mayor probably should have ordered evacuation on thursday from that forecast and then switched to "shelter in place" Saturday evening. The Mayor is on MSNBC giving his explanation right now and it sounds like excuses. To be fair, they tried that with NOLA, which was less than half of the size city of Houston, it gridlocked everything an insane amount, and the people who needed to leave didn't actually leave. If all of Metro-Houston had tried to leave, we are talking something like 5 million people trying to push out on I-10, I-45 and the rest of the highways and FMs.

zach collins
It is worth pointing out that since abandoning the mechanics changes, Collins has really kicked it up a notch. In August Collins has hit .333/.506/.667/1.173. His K numbers have also halved as compared to July and almost 1/3 of June (14k/79pa in Aug, 27k/81pa in July, and 35k/104pa in June). He has also been working a walk in about 1 out of every 4 PAs in August (20bb/79pa). His overall average is up to .229 for the full season and .304 while at AA in the 8 games he has been there.

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 10:37 AM) Worst case scenario forecasts look likely. Have to hope coast guard and others can get to all emergency Evacs. Houston is a tremendous American city, so hard to watch. It looks even worse than the initial forecasts. They were talking about up to 30 inches in localized areas early. Now they are putting up to 50! in some localized areas. Houston could get a years worth of rain in a few days time.
