  2. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 12:04 PM) I'm kind of surprised how many people want Engel starting over Cordell. Bring them to spring training and let them figure it out there. Heck there is probably room for both TBH.
  3. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 11:23 AM) Isn't the Iron Bank in Braavos, the "Free City of Braavos," on the show though? I'm not entirely sure that it's consistent that the Iron Bank would be like "we can't support Dany because she freed slaves in Slavers Bay and if she wins the Iron Throne she will spread those ideas to Westeros where slavery is already illegal?" That scene didn't work for me. But that scene kind of points to a larger issue. Cersei literally destroyed the Sept of Baelor, killing a popular Pope and popular Queen in the process. She's calling it "an accident" but there's no way that everybody doesn't know the truth of the matter - that Cersei did this. That act makes her the Mad Queen. But she is able to hand wave it away by being like "remember how crazy Aerys was? What if Dany is mad!" Or, "yeah, we haven't paid bills in awhile and, yeah, that caused you to bankroll Stannis. But Dany is anti-slavery! And something about Lannisters always paying their debts!" The point is that it doesn't make narrative sense for Cersei to continue to be able to persuade and consolidate her power. She started this season in a terrible spot, after having committed a straight up atrocity (that should have actually led to a popular revolt against her right?) and in 3 episodes, she's more powerful than she, or the Lannisters, have been at literally any other point in the show. In real life, I thought of it more like Tienanmen Square. The country looked on the brink of collapse, but after they rolled those tanks through and started killing people... things got pretty quiet. They have stayed that way for a couple of decades now too.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 12:02 PM) Eh you sound like KW, that's an excuse. Even the s***ty small market teams print money so I don't buy the "poor owner" line. All these owners should be relatively smart businessmen, if you provide a s***ty product/service you can't expect it to also make money. Fix your product. And if you as a billionaire owner lose a couple million in the process then so be it. If that's going to cripple you, then you shouldn't own a professional sports team. It doesn't require 100 million to have a competent scouting/instructional staff so you can draft and develop your own players which is the only way to have a competitive team. lol, everyone has no problem spending someone else's money, but if they want to act like a business man, look out....

  6. QUOTE (Tony @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 11:00 AM) If we are simply talking "quality" of a fan base, I think that's a pretty awful measurement tool. Everyone loves (or loved) to make fun of Cubs fans for packing Wrigley every day when the team was terrible. Did they have the best fans in the world or did they enjoy Wrigley Field? As been proven many times before, the White Sox have been one of the worst franchises in sports the last 20 years, certainly the last 10. I have a hard time denigrating the Sox fan base because they aren't shelling out their money to support a franchise that has given them very little the last decade. And I would argue that a good portion of that is because the ownership group has limited their options because of a fear of their own fan base. They literally had to wait years before the Cubs made rebuilding plausible with their fan base before they could do it. I mean basically we got the rebuild because of our little brother syndrome for the Cubs.
  7. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 11:40 AM) If it perfectly conceivable that neither of those guys play an inning in the big leagues until 2019. You're schedule is at least a year ahead of reality. Jimenez is way more advanced and rushing him would be silly. Rushing Kopech would just be dumb.

I have a hard time denigrating the Sox fan base because they aren't shelling out their money to support a franchise that has given them very little the last decade. You can look at it this way. If the Sox had a more loyal fan base, they probably attempt a real rebuild years ago instead of being afraid of another white flag style revolt. That is 100% the reason that JR wouldn't authorize this before now.
  10. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 10:59 AM) That's kinda how attendance works. When you go years and years without making the playoffs with no end in sight, fans tend to get frustrated and stop going. The teams with "good" fanbases tend to be the ones that are in the playoffs or at least in contention year after year. The fanbases that show up even when things are bad versus the ones that completely dessert a franchise makes a huge difference in the resources a franchise has. It is the reason that places like Cleveland stay bad so much longer than others.
  11. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 10:44 AM) Outside of that 8 year stretch, what have they really had to root for? A couple of Championships that happened long before most of their fans were born, and an appearance in the WS in the 50s followed by many, many years of nothing. One of the things that really made it jump was the new stadium in the 90's. It's scary how much they mirror the White Sox. A measure of the quality of a fan base isn't that they pack them in when winning. It is if they show up when they aren't.

  16. From the clips of Davis, is it just me or does his chest fly open early, giving the batter a long look at his arm and his release point? Maybe that is how he is giving up such a high hit number with as good of an arm as he has?

  18. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:55 AM) Yep, this is how I see it too. He's out until 2019, and come 2019 I think the Sox will be looking more towards actually fielding a competitive team, even if it's not quite there. Can you really count on a guy coming off Tommy John who has never shown a propensity towards staying healthy? And even if they aren't competitive enough, what are you going to get for a 32 year old injury-prone reliever set for free agency? I could see non-tendering and signing a minor league contract, but I think he'd prefer to take an opportunity elsewhere. I'm also not Zach Putnam, and he's actually been successful with the Sox and never anyone else, so maybe he'd be interested in that, having the Sox organization look after him during his recovery. I'd have no objections to them bringing him back on a minor league deal at all. With his injury history I doubt he gets a major league deal.
  19. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:41 AM) That's true but if they keep him in the off-season, he's back on the 40-man. This is accurate. There comes a point where everyone either has to be on the 40 man roster, or officially /released/DFA'd/non-tendered. The disabled lists don't open up until very late into spring training. Instead of taking up a spot where either we could claim someone from a team looking to create roster room, or someone would could be a Rule 5 pick, I think Putnam goes. When you look at his situation along with the White Sox situation, it doesn't make much sense to pay him to hold up a roster spot for one year of control.
  20. QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 09:47 PM) Love the NFL. Vick who is an ex-con, returned to the NFL and made millions of dollars. Such a role model for kids. Big Ben? Alleged rapist. You can commit all sorts of heinous acts and still find a job in the NFL unless you take a knee during the anthem. That's not the NFL... That's the fan base. I promise you if Kap was still a top notch QB, no one would care about this.
  21. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:01 AM) Putnam aint getting released with 2 years of control left One year of control is gone due to surgery now. So essentially they would have to pay him those last two years of arbitration salary to pitch on a bad to mediocre 2019 team which has all of this pitching in the pipeline. Seems pretty wasteful to me.
  22. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:18 AM) One team town and the American League champions. And a fan base that sold out games for 8 years straight. And outside of that 8 year stretch they are the historical absolute worst fan base of all of the old time franchises.
  23. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 09:17 AM) Don't change my message, please. I've never used the word "hate" when it comes to the owner. I have zero personal animosity to the man, as I've never met him. However, this is a White Sox message board, correct? And Jerry Reinsdorf is the owner of the White Sox, correct? And that means decisions he makes as owner have a direct bearing on the team's results and that which we as fans want to support? Well, do the math. Line up the years and years of those decisions with the results on the field, and see what you get. You get criticism of those decisions given the routine losing of the organization. The original poster of this thread brought up one of those decisions from 20 years ago that happened to be a doozy, and so I shared my point of view on that decision. I think I made valid points, but at no time did I inject emotion suggesting personal hatred for the man. I just want him to stop making bad decisions. Sadly, I've been waiting an awful long time for that to happen. You ever wonder how an entire message board all gets the same message from you, when you don't? I've been waiting a long time for that to happen too.
  24. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:10 AM) I repeat: the American league champions draw over 1000 per game more than the last place sox. And that is after play By MORE home dates. Sox are doing just fine. The Indians have very nearly the worst fan base in all of baseball. Outside of Oakland and Tampa, you don't really get much lower. That comparison honestly makes it worse, not better.
  25. I really wonder if Illinois will risk losing the Sox over a stadium?
