2008 Presidential Announcement Thread.
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 18, 2006 -> 07:47 PM) I'd wager that the American public is more willing to vote in a black man than a white woman. I'd take that bet if we weren't talking about Hillary Clinton.

For Dems only.
QUOTE(Damen @ Dec 18, 2006 -> 11:23 PM) Even members of the Bush administration have backtracked from claiming that to be our goal. Here's the problem with that. 90% of Shiites have voted for religious Shiite candidates. 90% of Sunni's voted for religious Sunni candidates. 90% of Kurds voted for Kurdish candidates. But 80% of Iraq is Shiite. That's how you end up with a plurality made out of two Iranian-aligned parties, The Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution and the Islamic Call parties. Yes, the Shiite Islamic fundamentalist governments of Iran and Syria are providing some support, but so is Saudi Arabia for the Sunni minority. But I think its a mistake to view their support as engaging us in a proxy war, and moreso capitalizing on the opportunity we provided for them to extend Shiite control from Iran across to Syria. Which is why Saudi Arabian clerics have called for support for Sunni militants, and the government has threatened to provide further monetary and military support if we leave. But, I don't see where our military comes into play anymore on a large scale. After 3 years of training, the Iraqi army has yet to take on Sunni militants without needing American troops to take over, and the day we ask the Iraqi army to engage with other Shiites in Al Sadr's militia is the day the army falls apart. The weapons we've provided for them find themselves on the blackmarket, to be used by the insurgency against us, likely purchased with smuggled oil profits we've been unable to control. Every "surge" we've had so far has failed to quell the violence. On the contrary, Anbar has all but been conceded to Al Queda connected Sunni insurgents and Baghdad is as violent as ever, despite the repositioning in June. Extending tours and reducing breaks to allow for 30,000 additional troops to get shot at will barely recover the troops in the "coalition" who are pulling out their troops, if they haven't already. It's nothing but an act of arrogance and vanity by men who have been wrong about everything so far, but still want to give one more CYA push on other peoples backs so they don't have to admit they were wrong. You probably need to do a little bit of research on your ethnic breakdown numbers FWIW. They really aren't close.

Would you trade Buehrle for Andruw Jones ?
Only if we got a long term contract extention with Jones in the process... otherwise, no way.

Ross Gload Traded For Andrew Sisco
Holy s***! This is an incredible deal. Gload was going to get 150-200 ABs for us, and we got a guy who has a phenomenal arm, who is having trouble growing into it. Forget him as the second lefty, send him to Charlotte and let him start. Give this kid as many innings as possible, as all rule V did for this kid was stunt his growth. As big as he is, it might take him a while to get his mechanics down, and I think the key here is not to rush him. With him having an option year left, lets use it.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 15, 2006 -> 02:46 PM) Yet, that is exactly what makes the most sense to me. Why is it we can't take the best of both parties and do something right? Because one side won't move from their "hugs not Jihad" platfom, and the other won't move off of "kill em all and let God sort em out." because they know they will be blasted for changing their minds.

QUOTE(thedoctor @ Dec 15, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) he did not publicly commit to notre dame. now i'm not saying he didn't tell the irish coaches that he was going there, but there was never anything public about it. So UofI never had any idea at any point that this kid had committed to ND? Please.

QUOTE(thedoctor @ Dec 15, 2006 -> 01:31 PM) eric gordon himself was quoted in the sun-times a month ago saying there were no death threats. sun-times The main point still remains that they recruited this kid after he committed to another school TWICE after the stink that got done about Gordon.

Blue Jays, Wells agree on $126M deal
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 15, 2006 -> 01:14 PM) I can't speak for anyone else but the thing that bothers me is the KW quotes and the Cowley story that suggest/say that the Sox won't resign any of our pitchers (ie Buehrle) for being too expensive. That is cheap. The bottom line determines if a team is cheap, not individual players. They can't resign everyone because we aren't the Yankees and can't afford a $150 million payroll. If they are paying out what they take in, they aren't cheap.

Interesting article in today's Trib. I had no idea that the one kid Illinois got that was so big, had committed to ND twice. So are Illinois fans going to give this kid death threats and nasty emails? http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...college-utility

Official NHL Thread
Outside of the PP, the Hawks looked great in this game. If anybody but Hasek is in goal for Det, the Hawks win this game walking away. The one thing I did notice about their PP was that they could not get the puck into the second level at all tonight. Everything was around the perimeter, and behind the net. They have got to get the puck from long range into medium range if they want to open up the net.
