They said they will re-examine in 3 weeks. I know nothing about ligaments, but he had a grade 1 in Japan. Now grade 2 with not a real heavy workload. Seems to me that ligament is going to pop eventually.

For sure. Depending on James Shields to pitch well to get you to the playoffs is like depending on winning the lottery to pay your mortgage. Not such a sound strategy.

The other thing to consider is with all the tanking, the fight for a WC isn’t as big as before. Right now in the AL it’s really a 6 team fight for 5 spots. The NL has a few more teams involved but not many. If you look at their rotations, it’s hard to see where Shields would be an upgrade, and you have to figure there will be better pitchers available.

You're a GM of a playoff contender and have to win games. Do you want James Shields on the mound for you?

White Sox select Nick Madrigal with 4th overall pick

The guy he reminds me of is a smaller version of Craig Biggio, with not as much power, but better contact skills and defense. Biggio was listed at 5'11" but Bagwell was 6 feet. Craig is significantly shorter, and they both have a bit of a leg kick. I don't want to say he is going to be a HOFer, that's crazy, but I do think he is going to have a significant impact on winning games. -
There's a reason its free.

He's probably distracted by all the trade talk.

Santiago isn't going to have those innings, because he will never last. He's gone by the 4th or 5th these days. His stuff isn't good enough for enough swings and misses, only increasing the ridiculous amount of pitches he throws anyways.

If someone would take Shields' money, that would by far trump any player they could acquire for him while eating it. No way that happens.

The picture in the Sun Times was even sicker. It was a horrible call. -
I think their biggest chip eventually, maybe not for a year, is a healthy Carlos Rodon.

Pip lead the team to the conference finals when MJ retired, and was perhaps an awful Hue Hollins call from getting into the finals. I do think it is a legit question as to how he would have been had he not been exposed to MJ, but I am thinking he would have been awesome. Mark Schenowski (sp) always says Draymond Green, if he were on a bad team, wouldn't be a very highly thought of player. Just another guy. He would lead the league in Ts if he was losing 50 a year. That guy almost took Lebron's eye out and he was b****ing. -

I had GS winning the title before the season started. Fantasy basketball is easy money. -
You can forget all the nasty things you have thought or said about James Shields the past 2 years to try to justify he actually has value, but he doesn't. He's James freaking Shields. If you are a contender, you don't want him in your rotation, and if God forbid, you really have no other choice, you certainly aren't going to give up anything for him even if all the money was taken care of. Half assed is giving a team way too much credit if it traded for Shields to get them to the playoffs.

White Sox select Nick Madrigal with 4th overall pick
Dick Allen replied to Bananarchy's topic in FutureSox Board
Especially when the reigning AL MVP is even smaller. Stone said last night in reality the guy might be only 5’4”. not to say NM will be Altuve, because that isn’t fair, it just shows height isn’t all that necessary to be a great player. And everything else except for power is pretty much off the charts. Watching the White Sox offense the past few seasons, and the teams collective baseball IQ over the same time, I cannot understand how a White Sox fan couldn’t be thrilled, and it wasn’t a reach pick. Chances are if the Sox passed, he would have gone next. -

I don’t think you can say he doesn’t walk enough. The goal is to have selective hitters. By his numbers he obviously is swinging at pitches he can handle. Obviously, the higher he goes, the fewer pitches he will see he will be able to hit hard. But the good news is his very low strikeout rate indicates he doesn’t swing at many bad pitches. This is the type of guy the White Sox have rarely had in their organization. I can’t wait to see his development. I doubt he will have much trouble in the minors. -

I really liked Madrigal for a long time. I started reading about him last year. Back in the day, I was hoping the Sox took Barry Bonds and Robin Ventura, not because of my superior scouting ability, just from write ups and scouting reports, and in Bonds case, bloodlines. They fucked up passing on Bonds, but they hit the jackpot with Ventura . So maybe I am on to something, although I must admit, Carson Fulmer was the guy I wanted them to draft as well. I hope I go 3-1 instead of back to .500. -

Usually most of these guys get a break after they are done with the college season, but since he missed some time, maybe he signs quickly. -
A fair and balanced soliloquy about Jose Abreu, by ron

I think he needs a new glove. That thing he has is way too loose. He's had balls go through the web and not had to repair it. -

This is what I think, although he seems too clever not to figure out how to hit homers. Look at Robin Ventura in the minors and his first year in the majors. About 1100 PA with 8 homers. I don't think he'll be a huge HR guy, but he's too baseball savvy to not at least be a threat to put one in the seats. -
If the Sox were in contention and needed another starter, how would you feel if they acquired James Shields? Probably not so good. And what type of package would you give up for him? Probably next to nothing. That's how this will go. If a team takes him, the Sox will eat almost all of the money and get some guy who we most likely will forget ever existed in short order. This is pretty much a non story. It isn't going to make much difference financially or talent wise moving forward if he stays or if he goes. If he really does help the young guys, they are probably better off keeping him this season. As for the future, he's probably done after this year. I doubt he will want to play for the wage he would command moving forward.

I like him because he is just a baseball player. Can he stick at SS? He will play wherever you need him and do a great job, like Yolmer in that respect. -
They are setting up a commission to study safety in schools. But guns will not be discussed. Probably an NRA demand. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Tuesday said the federal commission on school safety set up after a Florida high school shooting won't be looking at the role of guns in school violence. DeVos was asked during a congressional hearing whether the panel, which she is chairing, will look at guns in the context of school safety. "That is not part of the commission's charge per se," DeVos told a Senate subcommittee overseeing education spending. "We are actually studying school safety and how we can ensure our students are safe at school."
