  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 02:31 PM) That is a funny thing to be on your mind. Why is that? You know the reason why this is being talked about. And it isn't because no one said the words "Nick Capra" sufficiently enough. People can complain about Getz all they want. I even stated earlier his experience is light, but...do we even know his specific job duties? It's just odd that this position is now so important The guy that held it previously was never really questioned, wasn't ripped, wasn't really complained about moving into a job on the major league staff. If the development has been bad, and this role so crucial, it's amazing he has received zero play. All I was mentioning is now Getz get scrutinized more in one day, before he even starts, than this guy did in 5 years of apparent failure.
  2. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 02:26 PM) No, dick, it's because after a horrendous season that proved most of the board's worst fears about the white sox lack of direction, we put our hopes to see some change in any place it can happen. And when a pretty poorly performing area gets filled with a green candidate, it just re enforces that the White Sox do not see anything wrong with their set-up. That's why Chris Getz is getting this attention. Because he is the same blue print that we have been rolling out that has failed. Chris Getz was hired from the Royals. IT ISN'T THE BLUE PRINT.
  3. Another thing to consider is whether this is a promotion, demotion, or lateral move for Capra. When googling I did come across some article from his hometown when he became the director and he did say his ultimate goal was to become a major league coach.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 02:04 PM) If the argument is that you had to use the phrase "Nick Capra" to have an opinion on Chris Getz, then no it is not the truth, and yes, you have constructed an irrelevant strawman for no good reason. You love to pick fights. The reason is the White Sox director of player development has received more attention in 1 day than the position has received in 5 years, and it is because a guy played for the White Sox 7 years ago.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:58 PM) It doesn't have to exist. That is the point here. The strawman you are constructing isn't valid. There is no strawman. All I wrote was Getz gets more play on this board before he even started than Capra got in 5 years. IT HAPPENS TO BE THE TRUTH, but you and BMAgs decided it was time to argue and said player development has been discussed a lot. Which I agreed, but this thread is about Chris Getz, and a lot of posts are about how he is most likely not qualified. Yet no one ever really mentioned his predecessor.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:48 PM) The lack of "evidence" isn't evidence at all, when all of the actual evidence is there in front of you. So in other words, a Nick Capra thread doesn't exist.
  7. What will his be his typical duties? How will they differ from Buddy? And does Buddy trump Chris? I would imagine so. I would guess not. I would think Buddy Bell is the White Sox equivalent of John McLeod of the Cubs. He gets a lot of mention as a future GM, but the Cubs director of player development is Jaron Madison, probably a name most people in Wrigley Field last night have never heard of.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:28 PM) The player development of the White Sox organization has been very clearly slammed both on Soxtalk and around Major League Baseball. Moving the goalposts to something in the nature of SAY MY NAME is just silly. This isn't freaking Voldemort being talked about here. Even without saying Nick Capra, it is obvious that player development has had some major issues. Obviously the White Sox thought that someone else would be better in Player Development, otherwise Nick Capra would still be doing the job. To me that is the most obvious indictment of all of what was thought of the job that Nick Capra was doing. But feel free to keep on the usual posting path with this pedantic line. I call BS. While the player development has definitetly been slammed plenty and deservedly on this board, Capra is never mentioned, and if the consensus was he was so bad at his job, how come there was barely even a mention of him when he became the 3rd base coach. Just a couple of it's odd that a PDD would become a 3rd base coach. Nothing about his past job performance. If the Sox named Buddy Bell 3rd base coach, there would have either been outrage that he was still employed, or joy that he didn't have anything to do with the minor leagues anymore. And if it is all about what the White Sox think, why question Chris Getz? They obviously think he will be better in the role than Capra? This particular position became 10 times more important went an ex White Sox player got it with 2 years experience, even though those 2 years were with another team.
  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:12 PM) Just made the mistake of googling Nick Capra at work. Did the same thing on Friday. Oops.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:13 PM) This is a gigantic stretch, even for you. Whatever. I said Getz got more play on this board before he started than Capra got in 5 years. Link a thread or two that proves I'm wrong. Specific Nick Capra talk. From now on, minor league failing will be pinned on Chris Getz.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:10 PM) At FutureSox we've interviewed him, and discussed him over the years. We've also of course covered in depth the player development in general, of which he was in charge. What was the conclusion? Was he bad at his job? Really I have no idea, I've always focused on Bell. I've listened to him at Soxfest, he seemed OK to me. But considering there is enough blame to go around for everyone, he dodged a lot of it.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 12:50 PM) They probably discuss Buddy Bell, and whatever weird crappy organizational heirarchy the white sox have done that make it unclear who is in charge of things. But I think it's fair game, considering the shifts in the organization, that people would like new blood that would create a new direction, like how hostetler gave way to the end of Laumann. A former player with 2 years experience being given the director level means buddy bell is not losing any influence. And we can expect the same results. But you are okay with that, that's fine. I have stated many times, Bell is a problem IMO. But Buddy Bell is still here, and as long as he's here, he isn't going to lose influence, so really what does it matter if Getz played for the White Sox or not? This is new blood BTW. All his after baseball employment was with KC who apparently share the White Sox and every other team's bad habit of hiring people they are familiar with.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 12:40 PM) Yeah, even if the name isn't mentioned, development of position players, or lack there of, has been a very hot stove topic for a very long time around these parts. To say otherwise is to create a narrative that isn't there. I have not read once where Capra who was the player development director for 5 seasons, needed to be replaced. I've seen Hahn blamed, JR blamed, KW blamed, Buddy Bell blamed (by me), Laumann blamed, but never Capra. Either most of us didn't consider his position really some sort of senior position or he was perfectly competent but everyone else was making him look bad.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 12:38 PM) Yep, people never discussed their disappointment in player development from the White Sox. Such a hypocritical bunch. Never said that. I specifically alluded to Capra. Where is the discussion about him?
  15. How many times has Nick Capra's job performance been discussed on this board? Getz has already received more play and he hasn't even started yet.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 10:59 AM) Without being forced to name names, it is perfectly legitimate to question this hire. I get that a large portion of the questions are coming because of his status as an ex-player, but let's face reality and acknowledge that he is a guy with a pretty light resume too. I bet there are a lot more people who think 2 years in their current position is more than enough to prepare them for the next step. I really don't know much about him other than he supposedly is a bright guy and wasn't a very good player. As I stated when Theo became the player development director of the Padres, his only MLB experience was as a PR guy. Getz has more than that, and he wasn't trained by the White Sox. Obviously the Royals saw something in him to offer him a pretty decent job as soon as he retired from playing. Maybe he never gets this job if he didn't come up with the White Sox, but players are looked at as future coaches, managers, etc. by every organization as they come up. Every team is littered with minor league staff that has some sort of tie to their organization. His experience isn't much, but it's really impossible for any of us to say he isn't qualified. Let's face it, all of us have 2 years less experience than Chris Getz and think we know most of the answers.
  17. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 10:30 AM) The skepticism is misplaced. In this case, any evaluation of this hire should based on looking at Getz' qualifications for the job, including looking at his years of experience vs. other potential candidates out there, vs. his history with the White Sox. That's the pendulum swinging the other way. White Sox hirings should not be based solely on having a history with the organization, nor should they be prohibited as a result, either. Since you are complaining, why don't you list some available candidates that would have been better hires, and tell us more about Chris Getz, and why he lacks the skills to be a good developmental guy. That fact is, you don't know. The ONLY reason people complain is because Getz was drafted and played for the White Sox. W
  18. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 09:28 AM) The skepticism of this hiring is to be expected, as we as Sox fans are fresh off of the failed Robin Ventura experiment, where his hiring was done solely based on name and association with the organization. Getz may be an up and coming talent in the player development space, but regardless, you just have to wonder if he was the best available talent out there to take on this very important role within this particular organization, one where certain aspects of player development (position players) has been sorely lacking in recent years. It's from people who think any tie to the White Sox means they can't do what they will be hired to do, although many want Dave Martinez to manage. He played in more games for the White Sox than Chris Getz. People would rather have an idiot with no White Sox ties, than a bright guy like Getz just because he played about 120 games for the team. It's ridiculous. For all intents and purposes, Chris Getz is an outside hire. All of his management training has come from the Royals. This loyalty shtick is getting old. Why does no one mention Bobby Thigpen, someone I am sure JR feels more loyalty to than Chris Getz, is out of a job?
  19. Theo was a PR assistant for the Orioles, then became the Director of Player Development for SD.
  20. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 07:20 PM) Well, i agree with a previous poster. Chris has two years of experience. That seems a bit light. It does but what would be the minimum amount? He went to Wake Forest and Michigan so he probably is a bright guy. Baseball being a non revenue sport doesn't make it as necessary to lower academic standards to recruit players. I know nothing of his acumen for development, but it is possible he may be pretty good.
  21. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 06:55 PM) This organization has lost the benefit of the doubt. So really, that pretty much means there would be a problem with just about any hire, unless it was some guy who was a farm director of another organization churning out talent. those guys generally don't move to the same job in other organizations. Getz did play here, but he has been trained by KC. Only a couple of years, so we will see. Obviously they liked the way he answered some questions. Personally, I don't know what to think. I am not at all familiar with his eye for talent and philosophy. I do think if he never played for the White Sox, and had the same experience, not as many would be dismayed. I also like that they hired a guy that has zero ties to any current minor leaguer. I do think that it is natural to give many players the benefit of the doubt they don't deserve when you have ties to them.
  22. Smell sucks but at least he can nail a 3 once in a while. If MCW was going to play heavy minutes, I could understand this trade, but for a guy who might play 10-15? They need shooters. Shooters are the new craze. GarPax will try to buck the trend.
  23. Trump now thinks Hillary is taking some sort of PEDs for the debates. She should agree to it and them watch him back away. He can't stoop any lower than he is, but apparently he wants everyone to see the entire bottom. If he can't get back on track and actually act like a decent human being, I do hope this campaign ruins him financially. I saw where Cuban predicts he will file for personal bankruptcy in the next seven years. Trump busted and disgusted sounds like a great plan. Seriously, if this guy actually won how could any American be anything but embarrassed? Look at his behavior. Presidents don't do this.

  25. His lawyers want to sue them, but today's act of kindness from the Donald is he is telling them not to sue the dying NYT for ruining his reputation.
