  1. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 08:09 AM) 1. People can have a point of view on the Getz hiring without every having one on Nick Capra. 2. While Getz may know more than anyone here, that's not the point. The point people not interested in just arguing for the sake of arguing are trying to make is does he know more than other potentially available people out there who might have more experience than him? Or was this another move like so many in the past has been made where his simple association with the Sox in the past was the primary qualification the team was looking for. See Robin Ventura. The point is it's complaining about something no one ever considered complaining about before. Right up your alley. No one knows anything about Chris Getz's ability to perform the job, so it is assumed, just like with whoever they hired, that he obviously is unqualified and JR just went into his little black book and made a call to hire him. He is not an inside hire.
  2. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 11:49 PM) Blue Jays are just in a funk with the bats. Cleveland pitchers outside of Miller, Kluber, and Allen aren't even that good. It's the one downfall of HR hitters all over the place. You go into funks. They were last in the AL in runs scored in September.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 08:00 AM) You have latched on to that non-point pretty tightly. Again, there is no pre-qualification of needing to say someone's name to be allowed to talk about Chris Getz. Soxtalk doesn't operate like that. It's not a non point. EVERYONE thought Nick Capra was so insignificant in the grand scheme of things, he was never brought up on this board. Only when he had a quote about a player. Now it is one of the most imperative positions with the franchise turned over to Chris Getz who although he knows more than anyone hear, apparently doesn't know crap because he was in the White Sox system a couple of years ago, and this move will keep the team from winning for a long while. Its a mid level position at best.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 10:19 PM) Another strawman. Again, people have talked about player development for years now. Show me any talk about the director of player development, then pop off,
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 09:19 PM) As far as measuring failure and success in black and white terms, that's virtually impossible, since 65-70% of it is drafting talented players with major league ability. Simply going by the win-loss percentage of the big league club in 2018-2020 would be one indicator, but probably not the fairest one... So the hire is bad but we will never be able really tell. LMAO.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 08:39 PM) Yet there are zero proved cases of interviews being done in either case, and the job was filled in less than a week. And there is zero proof that Getz was the only candidate. But go with it.
  7. QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 08:43 PM) Dick, even as the board contrarian....at this point, why would the White Sox deserve the benefit of the doubt in any sort of baseball situation? What have they done in the last 10 seasons to deserve any sort of trust? That is my point. This position didn't matter much until they hired someone and the thread is pretty much the same no matter who they hired. I think it is pretty funny Getz is a failure. We will see in a few years.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 07:05 PM) Why is that? Because they didn't hire from within. Why is Renteria an outsider but Getz an insider loyalty hire? Why didn't they hire him when he retired? Renteria has coached 50 more White Sox games than Getz played.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 07:02 PM) I would love to see who they interviewed. Who was it? I don't know, but I would guess they looked a few people.
  10. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 06:48 PM) There is no replacement for executive experience, of which Getz has zero. This isn't a job like MLB hitting coach where you could argue experience isn't really necessary it's more about gravitas and ability to work with huge egos and get the best out of them. As Director, he will be responsible for the entire organization of the minor league instructional setup or by extension the people he hires will. Making those decisions will be the most important things he does. There is nothing in his resume that suggests he'll be a good executive and as anyone that has run a business can tell you it really doesn't matter how prepared or smart you think you are experience is by far the best teacher. Experience with your own decision making really. It's just a s***ty hire from a s***ty management team. He is still under Buddy Bell, who is under Rick Hahn who is under Kenny Williams who is under Jerr Reinsdorf. He may have a director title but he is still an assistant in reality. The buck doesn't stop on his desk. And he has 2 years experience with the Royals. He went to Wake Forest and Michigan, so he probably is pretty bright, and apparently knows a thing or two about baseball. Hopefully he knows a thing or two about developing talent, and hopefully Hostetler and his crew and Paddy and his crew, can put him in a position to succeed by bringing in some nice talent.
  11. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 05:01 PM) I think your point is well-taken, but that doesn't excuse the point that they should strive to hire more-qualified candidates. The point I am making is perhaps this guy is pretty qualified. Maybe they did interview several others. He is a hire from another organization so it isn't like they remained in house. I really think if Getz came up with the Dodgers and never played for the White Sox, those who find this move so wrong in so many ways would be OK with it. He hasn't been part of the White Sox way. Again, we don't even know wher Buddy Bell and others jobs end and his begins. They probably have a pecking order, but the organization appears to use or at least imply they use a lot of collaboration. I don't know if he is any good or not, but the Twitter world baseball people seem to think he is a good idea. We will see. Sideways or up is really the only 2 was the arrow can point from here. This just isn't a loyalty hire. Maybe they don't hire him if they didn't know him previously, but it isn't like they have been dying to get Chris Getz in the organization in some capacity like they have others over the years. This is different.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 03:27 PM) http://mbpelicans.mlblogs.com/2016/01/21/c...-jaron-madison/ http://vineline.mlblogs.com/tag/jaron-madison/ Jaron Madison was DIRECTOR of Minor League Scouting with the Cubs before changing to Director of Player Development. The previous one, Brandon Hyde, had eight years of combined minor league managerial, minor league infield coordinator and 2 1/2 years as Marlins' bench coach, including one game as interim/fill-in big league manager. Experience...in other areas. For both. And it's pretty much impossible for Sox fans to question the job the Cubs do scouting. And until I mentioned him, you have never heard of him. How many of their draft picks are on their roster? How come you never mentioned Capra?
  13. QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 11:06 AM) Scott is a good guy and sucks this happened. But also a reason I would never trust a scalper at a big game like that. https://theathletic.com/22249/2016/10/17/ho...-2-of-the-nlcs/ That's too bad. Last year I went to see Rush at the UC. My brother was in town and wanted really good seats. Stubhub was ridiculous, there were some pricey deals on Craiglist for tickets up front. I contacted a couple of people and told them we would pay them an extra $100 per ticket if they put the tickets on Stubhub. They wouldn't do it, so obviously phony. Wound up waiting Stubhub out and got 2nd row dead center for my final Rush show. But everyone needs to be careful. Scammers are everywhere. Stubhub has a guarantee.
  14. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 06:39 PM) That Elliott pick doesn't look so bad does it? RB have been devalued the last several years, but he is top of the line, HOF type talent if he stays healthy. I wish the Bears had him.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 02:31 PM) That is a funny thing to be on your mind. Why is that? You know the reason why this is being talked about. And it isn't because no one said the words "Nick Capra" sufficiently enough. People can complain about Getz all they want. I even stated earlier his experience is light, but...do we even know his specific job duties? It's just odd that this position is now so important The guy that held it previously was never really questioned, wasn't ripped, wasn't really complained about moving into a job on the major league staff. If the development has been bad, and this role so crucial, it's amazing he has received zero play. All I was mentioning is now Getz get scrutinized more in one day, before he even starts, than this guy did in 5 years of apparent failure.
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 02:26 PM) No, dick, it's because after a horrendous season that proved most of the board's worst fears about the white sox lack of direction, we put our hopes to see some change in any place it can happen. And when a pretty poorly performing area gets filled with a green candidate, it just re enforces that the White Sox do not see anything wrong with their set-up. That's why Chris Getz is getting this attention. Because he is the same blue print that we have been rolling out that has failed. Chris Getz was hired from the Royals. IT ISN'T THE BLUE PRINT.
  17. Another thing to consider is whether this is a promotion, demotion, or lateral move for Capra. When googling I did come across some article from his hometown when he became the director and he did say his ultimate goal was to become a major league coach.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 02:04 PM) If the argument is that you had to use the phrase "Nick Capra" to have an opinion on Chris Getz, then no it is not the truth, and yes, you have constructed an irrelevant strawman for no good reason. You love to pick fights. The reason is the White Sox director of player development has received more attention in 1 day than the position has received in 5 years, and it is because a guy played for the White Sox 7 years ago.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:58 PM) It doesn't have to exist. That is the point here. The strawman you are constructing isn't valid. There is no strawman. All I wrote was Getz gets more play on this board before he even started than Capra got in 5 years. IT HAPPENS TO BE THE TRUTH, but you and BMAgs decided it was time to argue and said player development has been discussed a lot. Which I agreed, but this thread is about Chris Getz, and a lot of posts are about how he is most likely not qualified. Yet no one ever really mentioned his predecessor.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:48 PM) The lack of "evidence" isn't evidence at all, when all of the actual evidence is there in front of you. So in other words, a Nick Capra thread doesn't exist.
  21. What will his be his typical duties? How will they differ from Buddy? And does Buddy trump Chris? I would imagine so. I would guess not. I would think Buddy Bell is the White Sox equivalent of John McLeod of the Cubs. He gets a lot of mention as a future GM, but the Cubs director of player development is Jaron Madison, probably a name most people in Wrigley Field last night have never heard of.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:28 PM) The player development of the White Sox organization has been very clearly slammed both on Soxtalk and around Major League Baseball. Moving the goalposts to something in the nature of SAY MY NAME is just silly. This isn't freaking Voldemort being talked about here. Even without saying Nick Capra, it is obvious that player development has had some major issues. Obviously the White Sox thought that someone else would be better in Player Development, otherwise Nick Capra would still be doing the job. To me that is the most obvious indictment of all of what was thought of the job that Nick Capra was doing. But feel free to keep on the usual posting path with this pedantic line. I call BS. While the player development has definitetly been slammed plenty and deservedly on this board, Capra is never mentioned, and if the consensus was he was so bad at his job, how come there was barely even a mention of him when he became the 3rd base coach. Just a couple of it's odd that a PDD would become a 3rd base coach. Nothing about his past job performance. If the Sox named Buddy Bell 3rd base coach, there would have either been outrage that he was still employed, or joy that he didn't have anything to do with the minor leagues anymore. And if it is all about what the White Sox think, why question Chris Getz? They obviously think he will be better in the role than Capra? This particular position became 10 times more important went an ex White Sox player got it with 2 years experience, even though those 2 years were with another team.
  23. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:12 PM) Just made the mistake of googling Nick Capra at work. Did the same thing on Friday. Oops.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:13 PM) This is a gigantic stretch, even for you. Whatever. I said Getz got more play on this board before he started than Capra got in 5 years. Link a thread or two that proves I'm wrong. Specific Nick Capra talk. From now on, minor league failing will be pinned on Chris Getz.
  25. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:10 PM) At FutureSox we've interviewed him, and discussed him over the years. We've also of course covered in depth the player development in general, of which he was in charge. What was the conclusion? Was he bad at his job? Really I have no idea, I've always focused on Bell. I've listened to him at Soxfest, he seemed OK to me. But considering there is enough blame to go around for everyone, he dodged a lot of it.
