  1. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 02:14 PM) Failed prospects with low K rates, ERAs approaching 5 in Charlotte? Uh, no. Sox will knock Weaver around today. So 25 year old former top prospects aren't what you are interested in? He is 3 weeks older than Avi.
  2. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 02:19 PM) Good question. Let's take a look at the facts on the ground as they exist today to see what the answer ought to be. Seller's market. Check. Sox are at .500, but in the 80% of the games they've played that did not feature Chris Sale on the bump, they've played to a .431 winning percentage. Check. Offense, once again, just like last year, near last in the league. Check. Six teams, including Boston and Toronto, ahead of the team for that second wild card spot. Check. You add all of that up and you easily get to the answer you are suggesting, GreenSox, the obvious and logical answer. Meanwhile, prepare yourself for a Jay Bruce announcement or the like between now and August 1st. Owner trying to win sucks Lose, lose, lose then Thad can keep b****ing.
  3. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 01:43 PM) It was partially self-made. The Padres were a 77 win team when he took over. At least he had the awareness to reverse course quickly when his team won 74 games. He's done a good job recovering; even Myers, whom he overpaid for, probably has much of his trade value resurrected. Hahn won 76 and kept plugging. We'll see. LOL
  4. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 11:30 AM) Jacob Turner - centerpiece of Anibal Sanchez trade. Another one of Hahn's boys -paid $1.5 mill for him. Hope he throws well. Isn't this the type of guy you love?
  5. QUOTE (captain54 @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 11:26 AM) Torborg's record with the Sox. .515 Ventura's record with the Sox…465 Manager of the Year award.. Torborg 1 vs Ventura 0 Torborg.. 2 seasons above .500, 1 season under .500 Ventura.. 1 season above .500, 3 seasons under .500, and one currently @.500 Torborg brought the 1989 Sox from a 69 win team.. to the 1990 Sox, 94 win team (finishing behind the 103 win Oakland A's, managed by the Sox reject, Tony LaRussa) Ventura is very kind to the Reinsdorf family and always brings a nice deli platter when he's invited to a Reinsdorf family event Torborg was .439 coming in and was given a prey good roster. His White Sox winning percentage is only .006 better than Terry Bevington's. And the experience card is beyond overplayed. Maybe in year 1, but they won 85 games. What Brooks Boyer should do is arrange an interview for Lip with JR, KW, RH and RV. He will never slam them again.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 08:47 AM) Right up there with giving Ubaldo Jimenez the biggest contract in White Sox history...brilliant stuff. If we signed Parra, we'd AT LEAST have a lot better DH production than Garcia. It's his defense that's dragging down his WAR. Might want to check on Parra's offense again. You are making things up. Wrc+ of 63. Avi has a 69.
  7. Here's the way to add three guys and not lose a single pick...upgrading three weaknesses instead of just one. Latos or Fister is signed to a one year deal, then you wait until June to add Fowler or Desmond (in June) depending on how Saladino and the outfield situation is going... So essentially Latos/Fister vs. Erik Johnson/Danks and you buy insurance against injury and can attach a QO if they pitch well (which they're going to be more motivated to do on a one year deal, theoretically). Then you're looking at Parra getting most of the playing time in RF. Garcia would DH against lefties, with Shuck playing RF for Parra. If you want to spend more for a higher OPS, you go Span over Parra and still keep the draft pick. And you don't have to worry about long-term ramifications for signing any of the Big 3 to five year exploding contracts. Not to mention you have even more financial flexibility created next season. This post has been edited by caulfield12: Dec 31, 2015 -> 10:03 AM Keep telling us how dumb Rick Hahn is. He needs to listen to you. if you were the GM the #1 pick may already be clinched.
  8. Read the first post of a thread you started. You are making things up again http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=97876
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 08:38 AM) I think I should copy and paste my thousands of words on why Desmond would succeed starting in December...because there weren't many here who thought signing him was a good idea at all. Bad defense. NL player. In decline. Won't easily be able to convert to outfield play. Too many strikeouts. Etc. Except he wasn't available in June. I know you were only posting what the White Sox would do, that is why you included signing him in June with giving Latos $10 million and Gerardo Parra $8 million, a couple things the Sox surely would have done,
  10. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 01:17 AM) Logically you should be right...but these are the White Sox remember. And even if he is let go, what makes you think JR will approve spending big money to bring in a competent manager with a track record? Hasn't happened since Jeff Torborg in 1989. Knowing this organization it'll be another former player trying to "learn on the job." Paging Jim Thome...paging Jim Thome. Mark Robin Ventura managerial winning percentage .463. Jeff Torborg managerial winning percentage when the Sox hired him, .439. Some track record. Competence in Lip's world is only an interview with him away. What is the cutoff to competent Lip? Torborg's career winning percentage is only .006 higher than Robin's.
  11. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jul 16, 2016 -> 01:49 AM) And an owner who won't break the bank in a hitter that this team badly needs. So in one thread you say blow this team up. In this one they just need a hitter the owner is too cheap to acquire. Seems you can't pick a lane.
  12. QUOTE (Condor13 @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 06:43 PM) Just realized that the Sox have no backup OF bc Avi is at DH Coats was the back up and hardly ever played. I think they will be OK.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 07:42 AM) If the White Sox are going to get a ton of credit for Jose Quintana (actually, quite similar circumstances to Guerra, except Junior's age and even more traveled history), then they should have to answer for why they didn't see Junior as having a future with the team. He's got a 2.1 WAR right now. Now we can't guarantee those same results were he pitching with the White Sox, but looking at all of the other pitchers the White Sox were protecting on their October 5th 40 man roster...it's a bit befuddling. The Yankees/Cashman always said Quintana got caught up in a numbers game and that they had a number of better, more highly touted prospects than him in their system...but who exactly from the White Sox system so badly needed to be protected? Simply making a pitcher's age as the PRIMARY argument doesn't make a whole lotta sense...because you have lots of guys like Esteban Loaiza, Matt Thornton or Jose Contreras that had their best years with the White Sox (well) past 31. Phil Humber, off the top of my head, was another guy who became serviceable well after his expiration date as a prospect. That said, I have a hard time believing Mr. Guerra would be putting up the same exact statistics as a starter with the White Sox in the AL Central. If we don't make it to the playoffs, letting him go will be about reason #59 for us not getting there. Guess who wrote that in May? There are so many of these it is hysterical.
  14. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 06:05 PM) Couldn't the Sox still trade for him? A Burns, Anderson, and Eaton trio would create havoc on the bases. Don't you actually have to be on base to create havoc? Burns doesn't get on base.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 05:31 PM) I'm impressed at how little there is in that statement. It's actually applause worthy nothingness. Totally serious, well done Rick. It is exactly what the vast majority of people in his position would say.
  16. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 02:59 PM) Fixed. Mr. Hindsight who likes to list people who are bad at their jobs and claims he has all the good ideas came up with this one the Braves would certainly not trade Inciarte straight up for Tim Anderson...not to mention the fact we'd suddenly have no SS or C of the future, essentially the two most important positions on the diamond.
  17. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 02:37 PM) I doubt he sustains that I doubt it too. That's why they are looking around.
  18. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 02:25 PM) I'm not expecting him to "break out", but when a guy is doing as ridiculously well in the minors as he is, he deserves the chance to hit in the majors. I think he could be better than Shuck. Since Jackson hurt his knee, Shuck is hitting .299 with an OPS over .800.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 01:57 PM) I'd like to think the key to making this work in some way is Mirotic and McDermott. They're about the only guys who have a 3 point shot as a part of their game on the roster - with the other guys around them they almost shouldn't have to take a contested 3 all year. Unless it is beating the shot clock or game clock, taking a contested 3 isn't very common. I will say this, prior to his getting drafted, McBuckets was doing some skills stuff at my gym. He wasn't just standing at the arc firing away, they had him making all these cuts then passing him the ball to hoist up a 3. I saw him hit what seemed to be 20 in a row.
  20. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 01:56 PM) With ample playing time in the minors, the guy is hitting over .350 with an OBP over .400. Sure, he's 34, but he's at least played well enough to earn a chance at the majors this year. The next time a 34 year old breaks out in the major leagues, let me know.
  21. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 01:52 PM) I think a guy like Peter Bourjos could be a target. White Sox have been interested in him in the past. Talked about sending Hector Santiago to Angels for him. They knew they could get him for Santiago but where asking other teams if they had any interest. He can't hit at all.
  22. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 12:49 PM) Your wise crack aside, you stumbled onto an interesting point. Shuck actually has a history of hitting left handers better than right handers, so using him because he's left handed, doesn't make sense. Moreover, I haven't been advocating a left handed hitter per say, but rather a "middle of the order" Left handed hitter. Hopefully, Morneau will fill that role. For those of you who think that I obsess about the need for a middle of the order, left handed bat, I'll remind you that Hahn has openly acknowledged that very need. I like Bourgeois because he could hit lead off. He has pretty good on base percentage skills, doesn't strike out much and can steal a base. I am not thrilled with Anderson leading off, because of his inability to take walks. If Bourgeois led off and could produce around a .350 OBP, then Eaton could stay in the #2 hole, and Anderson could hit somewhere further down in the lineup, although I'm not sure where. No Bourgeois doesn't have good OBP skills in the major leagues. In AAA, fine. But not now.
  23. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 12:32 PM) Yet they are continuing to run Avi out there when he would be better served trying to learn how to play in AAA THEY JUST ACTIVATED A NEW DH.
